When Familiar is used with a Jug pet it will see an increase in attributes but will not stay by your side for 30 minutes. Only Charmed Pets will stick around for 30 Minutes.
Using before?

Eh, it's fine and dandy if you can get a strong monster under your control, then using Familiar. However, would it work just the same if you used it before Charming a monster? Would it make the chance of Charming an enemy higher? If your mob dies by chance before the 30 minutes is up and you charm another would it give a higher chance of Charming and still give the strength boost?

The job ability "Familiar" only activates when you have a pet, so it will have no effect on charm rates.
Usefulness

I hear from a lot of BST that the 2-hour sucks, yet I find it very useful.. I don't know why everyone hates it. Sure, there's the plus of charming an IT for 30 minutes for a large battle that won't give EXP, but personally I love using it if I find an exceptional charm.

Now, I don't have the release command yet (level 24 here), so I don't know firsthand if that's a better option than what I do. Anyway, I've been in the Dunes for a while now, and the best pets I've found are sheep and leeches, and the occasional Pugil if I can find an Even Match. In the case that I do find an even match of one of these mobs, or even better, having something like "high defense," I'll almost definately use Familiar. This is what pet food is for, right? Keeping those spiffy mobs (and jug mobs) alive. I was able to kill four Tough goblins with one leech using this method.

Now, more often than not, I don't get the full half hour out of the ability, but I do get an exceptional charm for much longer than its natural duration. Anyone else find it useful like this?

Well Familiar is a decent ability in my mind, but not a great one. As I play a Bst/Rdm I have not exactly had the best 2-hrs to play with as is though.
The primary use I have found for it is when I am about to die against a T or VT mob. I try to charm until my HP runs dry, and if at any point I succeed I pop familiar to make sure he's mine... then I use him to guard me while I rest. works like a charm.
With the Reward ability it's so so. With the going rate of decent food now it way to expensive to use consistantly. I use it only if my pet is going to die while the enemy is still at 50%+
Well, just my humble thoughts, but then again, everyone should try it before taking a chatboards word for it.

PS: Nothing is funnier than a Taru beastmaster in all AF... there sooooo cuuuuuute!

i also used this in bosti when i had the W.ron camp and didnt want to give it up..

use your 2 hour and rest like you are resting MP and you can take a 30 minute break without someone stealing your spot..
what I use it for

I use this ability when I do BCNM battles, or Eco Warriors, or any time that EXP isn't a factor.

Charm a T, VT, IT and use 2hr -I can out damage per second any job of the same level. Plus I know I'm not going to need to worry about my pet coming uncharmed during the battle. 30 minutes gives me enough time to fininsh and zone.
Aggro afterwords?

After the 30 minutes is up, and the Familiar exits your control, will the creature return to it's past behaviour and aggro you (if it was an aggro'ing creature)? Or will it simply vanish into thin air? Becuase, when I become a BST (Which i can't wait for...) i'm going to be using this on the huge, burly fiends, and i don't want them to be aggro'ing me 30 min. later... ^^ Thanks in advance. Oh, and random question, what weapon would be best for a BST? I'm assuming axes/scythes?

Yes. Charming is considered an aggressive act. It causes your pet to have a small amount of hate towards you. When your pet uncharms it WILL attack you.

The thought of being able to charm a T or VT mob and keeping it around for 30 minutes without it turning, and it being a little stronger is nice, even with the larger XP penalty. Although this hurts the BST more aside from its very limited Passives, /cry. The mob is stronger but it isn't like 1337 PwN or whatever.. Be better to have the ability to charm 2 monsters or something, after all this job is meant to solo, just an opinion from a BST =).
hmmmm

this type of spell sure is a setback from the summoners ability. Myabe it should be a little better? Well, if thats what it is, then those monsters that you have as pets must get pretty damn strong.

if the duration from this ability is correct, it probably would be better than the summoner's ability, 25% of the downtime passes while it's active this way, only 2.5% in the summoner's case...
Wrong name
