It took me forever to do figure this out but it works.
The requirements for this Spell are
Rank 2 and you have to have give the guard (the one that cast signet) 60 crystals (5x12)
Then you will need the beastman blood vile and go talk to Novalmauge in the Oubliette.

I'm a tarutaru lvl 20 BLM with a lvl 10 WHM subclass and I just got this item after an entire night of running quests in sandoria. What does it do? I have dark magic lvl 50, and a wand which gives +2 INT, and I can drain lvl 1 sheep for like 40 pts of damage...worthless? maybe not, but I certainly don't know if it was worth all the work to get it....by the way the cast time is so long that there is no way you'll be able to get a cast off without it getting interupted. Not without a bind or sleep anyway.

its DEFINITELY worth it... i bought this spell when i was lvl 12 and kept my dark skill at cap from there on.
drain saved my life a thousand times. i throw it in right after getting hit and i am as good as new. as a taru, it heals u up to 1/3 of ur HP. depends on the dark skill u have, ur INT and the vs Dark of the enemy (maze maker will just drain for 1 hp for example, because they are nearly dark resistant).
i would advise getting this before u go level in the dunes (lvl 13-19).

You just have to check the bazaar often.
I checked a couple times a day until 2 showed up for sale. Cost was 21,000 gil.
Easy to make that much at level 12. Just go to the NE tower (mission 3 twr) and kill Goblins. Sell the Fire crystals in stacks of 12 for 2000 and 12 wind crystals off the bats for 1200 gil. Only took me 3 days soloing to get that much gil together.
Playing with the Drain spell now. Hitting small stuff for about 30 damage plus 30 heals (if not already full).
Remember it is not worth throwing if your health is already full.

Yes, buy it in an auction house. People do the quest and then sell it. It sells for 22,000 Gil on my server right now. Good luck!

Ok I just got Drain today so I know most of the details.

Next to get into Chateau d'Oraguille which gives you access to Bostaunieux Oubliette you need to be on a mission that requires you to go to the Chateau. Mission 6 for Bastok is the one I needed to be on to get into the Chateau. Just being rank 2 wasn't enough. I don't know how it is for people who are from San d`Oria or Windurst.
Next you need to have enough fame in San d'Oria to get the npc that gives the quest (Novalmauge) to talk to you.
I did not have enough fame, so I got someone who did have enough fame to turn in the blood for me, and he gave me the spell.

You say it's crap.. but what's your INT and Dark skill at? Anyway... What do you have to do to get Novalmauge to talk to you? Everytime I do it, he tells me to shove off if I don't have any business.

Posted: Dec 06 2003 at 3:02 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i hate people like you. i bet you didnt exercise your other dark spell (bio) to bring your dark skill up. this is the best spell EVAR. i feel like i have 190 hp instead of 130. that's big differnce since my dark skill is at 40, allowing me to drain for like 60-70. i always use bio to bring up my dark skill (to about 30) before i got drain. drain will save your life, guaranteed. dont listen to this tard.

It's a quest in San d'Oria, but I think you have to have allegience to that country (to gain access to the Chateau via the last rank 2 mission) to get the quest.
