Yeah... Blackbeard is a toughie... I um... "met" him on a recent fishing trip =/
He oneshotted me, but it was soooo funny - didnt even think about a NM, and was bopping away at the Skellies.. well.. he bopped back >_<

Pirates attack at anytime, day, night, sunny, foggy.
I never seen a pattern to it.
Blackbeard (and silverhook) do not have True Hearing. I have ran upto it and compared size. He is BIG. Almost as tall as me (Large Elvaan).

Silverhoook didn't aggro me either, I was attacking the skeles too >.< Maybe I should've have poked him ...
I had my first encounter with the pirates yesterday and I can also confirm the "door trick" to be true. No NMs, though, thankfully. =o)

I think Anticans and Skeletons regulars are the same size, but none ever appear in the same area so its hard to compared.
Another way to tell: if pirates are coming, it seems like all the passengers pop onscreen at the same time when you first zone in. If there won't be pirates, they gradually appear one or two at a time. I never noticed this until somebody mentioned it during a recent fishing trip.

this has to due with the same thing the guide sais. The zone loades in quicker on pirate trips (elements in the zone..NPC's and targetable objects such as doors^^) :)
