You're right on the money there. I thought it was semi-common knowledge but maybe I was wrong. That's why it's important to pick the correct mobs to level on with your NPC. Pick mobs that are difficult but give a lot of exp? You might run out of time before you can reach your max kill limit. Pick easy mobs that you can kill quickly within the time limit? You'll reach your max kill limit too quickly and could have used that time fighting tougher mobs for better exp.
You need to know your capabilities as well as about how long/how many mobs your NPC will stay out for and adjust as your NPC grows in level.

Originally I started out in Bibiki Bay killing efts. Then I moved to Yhoator Jungle vs. Gob Bouncers and Hunters. Those lasted me until my NPC's late 40s. Now I don't level my NPC solo if I can help it. I'll get a group of 2-4 friends and start fighting DC-EM Raptors in Uleguerand Range (NPC is now 56). They provide a good deal of exp, aren't too bad in a group, and we can kill them at an efficient rate. At a minimum I can usually snag 1 friend to help, and I've found that strong EPs or weak DCs provide the best exp/kill ratio. *Mileage may vary by job.

Also I'm not sure if any of you who have done the Promy quest have noticed, but NPCs absolutely tear up empty mobs. My NPC was hitting for a minimum of 2x damage greater than anyone else. A friend's NPC was using Sturmwind for consistant 240+ damage (only on GAxe #2 as well). Next conquest tally I'm getting my friends I NPC-exp with and we're taking our 4 NPCs as high as we can get in Promy-Dem or Mea. I have a very good feeling about this seeing as how it seems NPCs have the strength of 2 PCs in Promies and their battle A.I. is improving at a frightening rate.

I seriously doubt there is a kill limit based only on the number of mobs killed.

I would guess that there is an experience point limit for the npc instead. Could be for example 3k base xp limit (chains not counted). That would account for the 15 mob limit seen before the update.

Someone should try going to Ronfaure and killing too weak mobs. I'd guess you could kill hundreds of them before actually hitting the time limit.

An unrelated question:

I can't accept the first quest with an NPC lvl 37. Is trading headgear a prerequisite? Or do I need more affinity, where trading headgear gives affinity? I just recently traded the second weapon, have called twice since then.

the max time/number of mob limit was well known before this patch...

max time = number of mob * 3 min

so with the 15 mob limit you have 45min to fight with

20 mob = 1 hr

at the moment nobody reported a 25 mob cap

exception is the promyvion quest where you have just the time limit

for the chariot/empress band i have noticed (and reported in this topic) before and i'm pretty sure its some sort of bug (like the dropping perl trick) so use it while you can XD

Just got Blighted Gloom and my NPC is only lvl 47.

I would say I have called my NPC about 10 times (roughly) since the Oct. patch, and doing the meal quest.

BTW I finished it last night as well. Very interesting story line so far.

I'va managed to collect much of the NPC information into a new Wiki Guide. Check out the Wiki's

Adventuring Fellow Guide.

I've taken some liberties with the prerequisites for the NPC limit break quests and with the strengthens NPC Bond issues. I am gussing that the bond is akin to fame but are not specific prereqs for some of the other NPC related quests. Obviously as more is know the requirements it can be updated.

Hey there, I recently re-joined FFXI due to some monatary issues, and just recently obtained my NPC (3-4 days ago), so a lot of this is Greek to me. I also have a few questions/concerns, which I would appreciate some help with figuring out, But before I ask, I would like to know if anyone knows of a NPC guide, or something similar, so I dont have to disrupt this thread any further..

Thanks in Advance.

I noticed this. My NPC has lvl 2 H2h weapons and did nearly 60 damage a fist. We tore through empty mobs with no problem. I let him tank since he took less damage then me (a pld in kampf armor) and could counter. Also got 2 recollections very fast.

Tempyst said his NPC now stays out for over an hour (I think 1:15 to be exact). His NPC is 55, and he has completed the second Genkai quest.

Nope, that's why I left Bibiki for Yhoator at such an early level. I was killing efts so quickly my NPC went away after about 15 minutes. When I switched to Yhoator, my NPC stuck around for much longer (because it took me longer to kill the goblins) and I went from getting a level every 3 days to a level every 1.5 days.

Let me see if I have this right about weapon upgrades. I did 1h axe for first and second upgrade. I now wish to have my npc use a great katana. When the third upgrade option comes all I need to do is trade the G.K., right? Or do I have to trade all 3 G.K. to Luto?

You can trade just the newest Great Katana from the upgrade you just gained access to.

Anyone have a map of the ???'s in the Proms?

They do not seem to move, atleast on the first floor, the three times I have been there.

BTW, if for some reason you like having your NPC to play with in Promivion, you can use them multiple times in a single conquest update as long as you don't complete the quest.
If you disband from you NPC, you can call it again the next RL day, and maybe sooner, (shortest re-call has not been tested).
The NPC doesn't get the quest XP, but you will get a fresh 45 minutes for the next time.

Woo! New NPC Appearance option unlocked! After I did Weapon Upgrade #5 I went back to talk with my NPC.
*New appearance option not necessarily dependant on Upgrade #5

Under "Appearances" there was a new option called "Fashionable Equipment". You get to choose from None, Body, Hands, Legs, and Feet. When you select one of them, it 'locks' the equipment they're currently wearing to your NPC so it won't change. So wait until your NPC decides to wear a piece of armor you like, then go select that slot and lock it. You still can't freely choose what armor they wear (except headpieces).. I have yet to determine if you can lock all the pieces at once or only one at a time. I've used up all my Tactic and Signal calls for today so I'll have to update this later.

Edited for clarity

NPC is two fights away from 53 and I already got the 55 cap quest finished.

No sign of Chameleon Capers either.

My NPC also stays out for 65 minutes.

I believe all these quests are relationship based, and not level based in the slightest (with the exception of the 50 cap).

The locking equipment option is really nifty, though I haven't seen a change in the types of gear my NPC will equip.

Wow Purplenv, rate up, great info...

So basically, you could take an alliance to the top floop of promys and xp your npc for 45minutes(iirc) every game day?

That may seem a bit tedious, getting to the top floor of promys is not very hard... just extremely annoying... maybe start an ENM/npc xp static O.o

Like the pearl dropping glitch, I doubt this is what SE intended to happen, so expect a patch(notice I'm not saying nerf -_-) in the near future :(

You could take your NPC out every day, but I don't think you'd get exp from it. It's really determined by whether or not your NPC gets exp from each kill at the moment of the kill, as opposed to just a lump sum of exp at the end when you finish the quest. The only way to know for sure would be to talk to your NPC as soon as she appears in the Promyvion to get her TNL, then kill things for 45 minutes straight and check her TNL again before she goes away. Good question! I won't be able to verify this one way or another until Sunday.

Edit: Forgot a very important point I unfortunately discovered the other day. If you have your NPCs out for the quest in Promyvion, DO NOT form new alliances. You can have alliances if they're preset before you call your NPCs, but if you add another party or start an alliance after your NPCs are called they will disappear and you will not be able to restart the quest until midnight JST.
