I ran into someone who asked my mule if he could have a stack of Fang arrows for free out of nowhere.

Not as good as some others, but still noobish <_<;

My favorite newbie moment was from when I got a co-worker to start XI and was showing him the ropes in Windy. I gave him some starting gil, only like 3k, and walked him through the mog house exit quest and tried to get him to buy the flower himself off the AH. He bids on it and says:

"Ok, I got it. I'm out of money now..." I have a minor wth moment and look at the listings. 300 gil 9x and a 3000 gil at the bottom.

Me: "You hit over one too many times didnt you."
Him: "Yes ;_; omg im sooo sorry I wasted so much of your gil, I'll pay you back eventually". I laughed hard at that and gave him 5k so he could try bidding on gear next.

My worst noob moment was when I tried to bazaar on my mule, which I fish on when bored. My fish weren't selling on AH so I set up shop outside the cooking guild and went afk for the day. Came back that night and noticed I had a fairly huge chunk of gil, but only one stack of fish had sold. I then noticed that I had mistakenly listed each ITEM as a STACK that morning. Hehe... oops, I hope that poor sob enjoyed the fish ^_^"

I was doing promies with a bunch of friends my ls. We get to the top and their explaining to our smner when to astral flow.

Person explaining on vent: "So do you understand what you have to do. Astral flow at XX% with ifrit."
SMN: "How do I astral flow"

SMN= Level 50 with a level 75 blm and whm at the time.

Another time I was blitzkrieging the avatars with a monk/nin friend we would Duo em and so I had a friend on another LS who was a rdm who needed fernir access. So I said sure come on along. So we went and got to titan we go in (I melee with my friend on whm) I'm up there and in party chat she asks.

"What element is titan weak to?"
Me: "o,o"
Me: "He is earth-base."
RDM: "So that means he is weak to...?"
Me: "...wind"

At the end of the fight.

Me: "This is the elemental cycle. Wind>Earth>Thunder>Water>Fire>Ice>Wind"
RDM: "0h ok."

We go to fight Leviathan.

RDM: "So this one weak to?"
Me: "Thunder.."

We go to fight Garuda.

Me before she even asks: "It's weak to ice."

We seem to be seeing a rash of ppl not checking levels again, just like when the game started. Just the other day I was running through Qufim Island as my PLD when I see:

Ramdomguy invites you to his party.
/sea all Randomguy
Randomguy = lv 20XXX/10XXX
*decline*
Randomguy invites you to his party.
*decline*
Skif>> Um, I'm lv 57, you won't get XP
Randomguy>> {Huh?}

Randomguy>> lol, we need tank
Randomguy invites you to his party.
*decline*
/blist add Randomguy

Maybe I should've tried to explain to him, but blind invites are one of my pet peeves, and not taking the hint just adds to it.

And not long before that a friend of mine was seeking as 43 PUP and got invited to a lv 20 Qufim party. She accepted without looking at first (I'm sure she assumed ppl would LOOK at lvs first) then looked at the lvs of the other players, and had to spend about 20 mins trying to explain to them about lv differences. They ignored her, so she disbanded. Then she started getting /tells about how rude it was... /sigh

was leveling my npc a bit in the Altepa, when an earth elemental pops. i was bored and decided to just nuke it. here's me, 75blm and i KNOW the elemental cycle:

Alayic casts Burst II on the Earth Elemental
The earth elemental takes (insert double digit number) damage
"wow...what a resist"

Alayic casts Thunder III on the Earth Elemental
The earth elemental takes (instert lower double digit number) damage
"what the...*self slap*, earth > thunder"

Alayic casts Aero IV on the Earth Elemental
The earth elemental takes 7xx damage

just goes to show anyone can have a noob moment, even when you really should know better lol.

edit: quoted wrong person

When I got the game I didn't get a book type manual (didn't realise it was on the disc). Had played FF7 to 10 and thought you had to save at a save point. Spent an hour trying to save game at windy home point. Didn't log out of game for 2 days before I found out.

Today, due to a combination of very strong painkillers tripping me out, and a new laser mouse that is so sensitive it moves when I click the button, I paid 540k for a 20k water staff. It was meant to be a jupiter's staff.

And in case this player is reading. Last december, first day in, some very kind player gave me 50k (bought 1 crystal off me) Unfortunately, I didn't notice 'til 4 days later. Never thanked him and have always felt bad about it. So, if you're reading this.....thank you.

man.... I had lots of noob moments.

First when I started as an Elvaan WAR.I got my first party @lvl 9.And it was in the dunes. So I went there. Reached the camp and the leader who's also a WAR said that he will be the puller/tank , and I'll be the back up tank , he pulls , and after a while I spamed my provoke macro. And filled up the chat with "/p Come fight me <t>! {Provoke}!" with a big "WTF?" above my head , "why I cant provoke it?!" I said. Apparently , you must type /ja "Provoke" <t> and not /ja "provoke" <t>.

After that I told the leader he cant pull/tank."so let me pull" I told him. I had a bow and some arrows.So I went after a lizard , engaged it and hit the Ranged Attack button. Since I engaged, I had lock-on on the lizard. I couldn't run and didn't know how to remove the lock-on target ... so I got killed >.>;

I learned how to pull and tank after that party haha.

Recently , I have been helping a couple of friends with CoP. And I was the one who briefs them about the mission and all. We went 1/1 from promyvions to mammets to diabolos to Ouryu to promyvion-vahzl and actually finished almost all 3-path parts , only Tenzen path left , that annoying doors dungeon.

so , we head to Pso'xja , to the 50 cap tower. And we started opening doors. On like the 6th door , after we killed the doll. We proceeded to the next room which had a tonberry/hecteye in it , I told them to pull the hecteye and kill it then go and kill the tonberry.

they all went inside and then the tonberry/hecteye aggro. I was thinking "WTF noobs" well WRONG they're not. I went in with them , they fought the tonberry. So I casted gravity on the hecteye (cant sleep hecteyes). And took it back to the other room. I forgot that the door closes after like 20 seconds.

well , no problem right? they can finish off the tonberry , then the eye and tractor me. Noob me clicks on the door. I thought it would open up since we already killed the doll I thought it wouldnt pop. And on the first door , our SAM d/c'ed before he could pass the door. And when he got back the doll didnt spawn for him , gusse he was lucky =P. Anyway, the doll spawned , killed me , and headed to the party. Which couldnt handle a tonberry , a hecteye , and a doll NM. We all wiped in a very dangerous room , took us about 30 mins to RR and recover with out getting the hecteye's or the tonberry's attention ... I felt really noob after that and kept apologizing till we finished the mission >.<;.

P.S English isnt my first language , so please forgive my poor grammar.

I have a funny story though it's not so much noobish as it is funny.

Last night I was in a mostly Japanese party. I speak Japanese and play on a JP client so the JP usually consider me a Japanese player (well I live in Japan too...) anyway, I'm digressing already.

Our party had an American NIN. After a while of pulling (at least 2 hours) the NIN asks if he can go AFK to make breakfast. The DRK told him to go ahead and make it as we were doing well and such. I (SAM) somewhat became the new tank as I was actually evading fairly well but mostly the 2Hs in the group were sharing it a bit.

The NIN levels up while making breakfast and I make a joke to the JP players. (not fully quoted correctly)

"Hey! Leveling up while cooking breakfast!"
"Maybe he leveled up in breakfast cooking!"

From this point on, our NIN's new nickname amongst the JP players was "Asagohan" (breakfast).

The NIN apologizes for being away to cook breakfast and mentions it's 6AM over there. It doesn't take long for the Japanese players to put two and two together...

"He's been gaming since 4AM?! Breakfast is really hard core!!"
"Just what I'd expect from "breakfast!""

"I wish "breakfast" would start provoking more."
"Well, when he's done eating he should get better."

(He doesn't. He ends up not provoking much not that it helps him keep hate from the 3 2-Handed weapon users- DRK(GSD), WAR(GAX) + SAM.)

One of the JP players starts talking to the NIN. Asking him if he goes to school, if he's getting enough sleep and such and the reactions went something like this:

"He said he doesn't sleep at school."
"Tell him that he should be sure to get enough sleep!"
"He should have to go to school soon, shouldn't he?"
"He said he would be going to sleep after this."
"So... It's not that he doesn't sleep at school... he just doesn't go to school?!"
"You shouldn't be doing that, "breakfast"!"

Anyway... I don't remember the entire conversation but whenever "breakfast" was mentioned, I had trouble not laughing at the comments. I kind of felt bad for the NIN with his new nickname, but having been in JP parties for so long I can understand their surprise. On the weekends, JP parties will usually always disband around noon to one o'clock for lunch if they start earlier, then usually around 6 or 7ish for dinner so going to cook a meal while playing-- let alone in a group-- is rather unusual for them, I imagine.

Anyway, as I said it wasn't n00bish, but I thought it was amusing.

Nooblet Story

Partying in Garlaige Citadel. I am on Sam, Bro is on Rdm, we have a Pld tank, a Whm, a Drk and just got a Blm. Had 2 Smn which the WHm and Blm replaced. The Drk and myself had beend Skillchaining and doing distortion chains and the Summoner had been bursting with Ramuh.

So once smn leaves we go back to a Distortion chain seeing as it was stronger, and wetell the Blm to Please Burst on it.

Blm says huh? whats a Burst....

My bro, who is a 75 blm explains to the Blm what a burst it, how to do it and all the details.

After bout half an hour or partying and the Blm bursting water 2, cause he did not have blizaga -_- he finally got the hang of it.

When we disbanded he said he had a lot of fun and had never done/heard of that before.

I think its sad, Especially for a Blm to NOT know this. This is the primary role of a Blm to do max damage with bursts and be exploiting weakness elements.

This was a while ago but it's still to this day my "best" n00b moment in this game and o've had a few..

I was doing LB3 with some friends we where on the Davoi part so we /random to see who'd go do all the running around the PLD did it while the rest of us waited in the tower thing. A few minutes later i was starting to get really bored so i got the bright idea to try and range attack one of the orcs bellow it must have ran around all of davoi before it finally made it up the tower by the time it got there it had linked with about 30 other orcs including the high lvl once >.<

Same kind of thing happened to me, one of the noob moments I'll never forget. Me and my bud are doing LB3 aswell, the Davoi part, and he's the one doing all the running around. So, I /sit on that little tower place by the NPC's while he's off doing all the junk, and there's nothing but <Too Weak> Orcs below me, so it's not like I even thought twice about it or anything.

Like 5mins go by, and everything's great, but suddenly one of the <Too Weak> Orcs patrols underneath me, aggro'ing me from like 30ft below because my character was sitting, and takes off the other direction, with a couple other <Too Weak> Orcs.

I tell my buddy on vent, "Somehow I just aggroed 3-5 <Too Weak>'s, shouldn't be a problem. Another 5mins goes by, I'm like "Eh, guess they got tired on the way here and gave up."

Just then, 20 Orcs come hauling *** around the corner charging straight at me, including the level 65ish ones, lol. Needless to say, I got pwnzored.

Good thing my friend was a White Mage, and came back and ressed me after he finished the little orb quest thing, but I still think I deleved from that, was a bad, nooberific day. ><

I have... a n00b story to tell this time!!

Lvl 24 SAM, Qufim... Qufim has become... the new VALKURM! (really T-T;)

I join the group and run down the tunnel. Our PLD joins and is just ahead of me. A weapon is in the way. I stop, use an oil and see the PLD is still standing around so I offer a trade. Nothing. I ask him if he wants the oil or if he's going to argo the weapon. PLD argos the weapon and starts running. He later dies to a wight due to low HPs. I had voked the weapon off him and ran away and it despawned. >.>;

Minutes later after HP and runback.

PLD: WTF is a Goblin Bounty Hunter?!
WHM: It was put in to aggro fishing bots and such
ME: and any players stupid enough to aggro them.
PLD: Why did it aggro me in the first place?
<Me: Because you were stupid enough to aggro it?> -Thought, not said.
WHM: Because you're weaker than it.
WHM: They never set it to discern normal people from fishing people.
PLD: What idiots!!
Me: Um.... well.....,
ME: Do other goblins argo you?
PLD: Yeah.
ME: Then what makes you think these wouldn't? They are *Goblin* Bounty Hunters...
PLD: Yeah, that's what killed us.

Anyway... yeah... >.>;

Here's my favorite personal newb story.

I started out in San'doria, and during the course of lvling in Ronfaure I kept coming across a character named Zovriace. He ran back and forth across the pathways a lot, and I never saw him attack any monsters.

One day I was resting MP at the gate to Sandy, when up ran Zovriace. He mentioned to the gate guards in /say that the path was clear. I thought "Hmm I guess he's a roleplayer."

A week or two went by, and I slowly lvld up (whm is a terrible first job >.>), and I still constantly saw Zovriace. I thought to myself, "man, this guy must play 24/7."

Here's a screenshot of Zovriace if you're interested ^^

I've played FFXI for just about 5 years now. Over the course of my career I have:

- Gotten the party killed by using AoE (Stonega).
- Found out which monsters aggro and which don't by trial and error.
- Accidentally cast a spell on a bat in The Maze of Shakrami (yes I'm old school, people used to party there).
- Targeted a lizard in Yhoator Jungle on accident.
- Accidentally canceled sneak/invis in the middle of a crowd.
- Gotten the party drawn in to face the Minotaur (they were NOT ready).
- Tried to take down that Axe Beak NM in Meriphautad Mountains because I was level 43 and nothing could possibly hurt me.
- Died to a Tabar Beak in Sauromugue Champaign because of silence; at level 60 thief.
- Charged bravely at the incoming Yagudo in my first campaign battle at level 55 (that didn't last long).
- Been stomped to death by a ram in La Theine Plateau.
- Found out about true sight the hard way.
- Found out about magic aggro the hard way.
- Learned not to click random ???s.
- Resurrected a legendary thread from the dead.

I hope that there are still more stories to add to this great thread!

Ahh I've been trying to find this thread for MONTHS (or at least half of last year ... I can't believe I was the last one to post til the necro D:)

Anyway, I just recently had an old friend from highschool start the game up and have been showing him the ropes. One evening he was ready to go to Selbina, and had to take the ferry from Mhaura.

Well, getting there was no ordeal, so once he got there I warned him, check and make sure you get on the right boat! If you get on the wrong one (the one to Aht Urghan), it will kick you off. The usual off-hand warning everyone makes to anyone who hadn't taken the boat to AU/Selbina before.

He was suddenly worried, and asked me immediately, could he get back on?!

For a second or two I was confused, and then I clued in. He thought it kicked you off the game! Oh no, I said, it just pushes you off the boat, not the game!

He was so relieved to hear that, it was cute XD

My own personal noob moment:

I'm in a party for the first time in Valkurm Dunes, swinging away at lizards. I'm on RDM, and meleeing while back up curing. We are right next to the cave with the sand bats. As I open my magic menu up to cure someone, I can't figure out how to move the target to someone in my party because I'm locked onto the liz. Somehow I knew that if the target goes off screen, you will unlock it. So I devised a genius solution:

So in order to fire off a cure, I started backwards running with my sword out into the cave to get the liz off of target lock. As I am backpedaling, I aggro the sand bats and die. Countless lolz ensued in /party.

I'm a noob myself, but I still found a funny moment.

I was in a party at valkurm, and we had a low level WHM come in so we synced to it and went to the lower spots. Anyways, this level 8 RDM Hume runs in shouting HELP PLZ HELP PLZ, etc. Anyways, we asked what he needed. The guy then said "You group run me to sandy plz i got 2 meet som1". We replied that he is only 8 and if he is looking to level up with a friend at another city, the best thing to do is to just remake or level up some more until he is capable of running there himself. He then gets a tad ticked at us and basically tells our entire group that we have to run him, and he wasn't just asking either, he was trying to MAKE us. We were laughing our asses off in party chat, but anyways, this dude literally follows us around for like 2 hours until finally aggroing some bats and dying. An hour later, we head over to the Valk OP to grab an FoV page and hit up the Oasis. The dude had somehow managed to get all the way over there, and GOD did we laugh so hard. The entire time we were there (like 4 more hours) the dude just sat there shouting for people to run him. Was a very amusing night xD

I got a good one. I'm farming bee hive chips in Giddeus and I run into a player coming from one of the routes and I ask him in /tell "Are you farming chips?" He replies <Sorry I do not speak English>.

So I let it go and try to farm behind him, when about 3 minutes later I get a /tell from him again that goes "I totally told this douche I don't speak English with the auto translate lol" Then he spams "MT" about three times while I'm lmao.
