I did some looking at SE's chocobo descriptions again:

Quote:
Rounsey: With its huge population of adventurers, Jeuno boasts more frequent use of chocobos than any other nation. The main type of chocobo to be found in the duchy is the mid-sized rounsey. The pride of the famous trainer Brutus and his family, the rounsey is the result of a lengthy breeding program involving wild chocobos. This program has produced a robust mount of somewhat unpredictable temperament that is suited for long, punishing treks.

It looks like, from the description, that the Rounsey breed may very well be the top Endurance chocobo. It also mentions that all of the other breeds can also come in yellow though -- so there may be a hidden "Purebred" Yellow among all the regular yellows, perhaps!

Quote:
They underwent training that allowed them to bear the weight of heavy armor and withstand the shock of cavalry charges. Destriers were characterized by their large, jet-black bodies and thick, powerful legs. With the decline of lance combat and improvements to ranged weaponry, destriers lost their place in battle to the faster coursers.

This is also rather interesting, as Coursers are associated with Red chocobos. The quote seems to suggest a connection with high Endurance. On the other hand, it could also be possible that it is meant to suggest Black Chocobos may have some advantage to recovering from being hit with offensive items (as opposed to outright evading them -- the "unaffected by" message).

Quote:
Due to a request from the southern Mithra wishing to blend into the jungle, there are some jennets that can be found in a shade of green.

...and speaking of evasion, that seems to support Green chocobos being associated with Windsday/AGI, which for chocobos could be Receptivity.

I’m still new to all this choco raising/racing stuff. I have a few questions I could not find after an hour of reading this thread.

Is it confirmed that you get Gallop and Canter from Curious and the impatient stories?

If so how do you get these stories?

I have a male chocobo and hope to breed, can I raise a female and take both cards to Jeuno to breed them?

Yes. You get Gallop from the Impatient story after meeting with Hantileon on walks three times. You get Canter from the Impatient story after meeting with the breeder from Jeuno on a walk three times.

Something I recently experienced regarding chocobo care...

My Chocobo was at Average Discernment/Receptivity. Care plan was at the time on Exhibit Chocobo, switched to Deliver Messages but hadn't taken effect yet, due to the latency in setting plans. I had let it race with others, then told a story (chocobo was inspired and recovered energy), then raced it with others twice. Each of the three times it lost. Upon checking it again, I found the Discernment had dropped to A Bit Deficient.

A few days later, it started the day checking Discernment A Bit Deficient and Receptivty Average. Care plan was Deliver Messages. I raced it with others, let it get inspired by a story to recover energy, then raced it again, winning twice. In addition, I got a Intelligence up from Kamp Kweh. I found, upon checking it again that the Discernment went back to Average.

Unfortunately, since I performed multiple plans between checks, I can't distinguish well between the various effects. However, I have come to suspect that letting your chocobo run against others lowers mental traits when you lose (possible that winning mitigates some of the decrease). Also, I have to wonder if being inspired by a story causes your chocobo to receive a small INT boost above what it would normally learn from a story (pure speculation).

I've been told that Hantileon after meeting him three times gives the Story of an Impatient Chocobo. I'm from bastok so where do I meet him?. Is he found on regular walks?

Brutus is the person that gives the Story of a Curious Chocobo correct?, do I fine him on long walks?

Thx very much.

You failed to say what food you fed your bird. If you fed it Vomp carrots then the Drop in Dis was to be expected. I found early on that you get whatever effect from the food right away and on several occasions have done nothing more than done a feeding and then checked the stats to find a change. Other than that I can only guess as to the reason.

Indeed, I did feed it a Vomp Carrot, and it is quite possible that the drop was from the food only.

On a side note, I met someone with a lovesick chocobo (Black, Male) who claimed he had been feeding a Celerity Salad everday for the past 3 real-life days, with no cure -- which would mean that the salads are not 100% effective (I have always had the lovesickness end the day after using the salad).

I have just now reached day 19 on my chocobo. Feeding only Sandy carrots every day (2) keeping her on basic care and walking every day 3 times, then watching over my chocobo to use up her energy. She didn't regard me as a parent until day 14 then it wavered up and down. It would go up when i watched over her, didn't change when i fed her, but the next day it would go back down.
Now that she has reached day 19 her personality is "more energetic then usual" and regards me as a parent. Doesn't look like I'm going to get any sort of special color from her she has white tips, but I'll post if that changes. Though she won her very first race, don't know if that happens for everyone.
I"ll keep posting on my chocos as I breed them and so on.

Hmm... guess this update didn't introduce the previously data-mined chocobo items:

Quote:
Gysahl Slop: This secret blend of top-quality chocobo feed will keep your bird coming back for more.
Deluxe Carrot: This high-quality carrot has been grown using only the finest fertilizers.
Deluxe Worm: This high-quality worm has been raised in the finest soil on Vana'diel.

Looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer to see what they do -- probably won't be added until after the full choco-racing is introduced.

Raising my chick I took it for a short walk and got the whole "lost chick" scene. Well my friend said they'd give you hints about the person after a few days, and I haven't gotten any thus far, and I can't find the person they're talking about at all (I assume it's an NPC in one of the saruta baruta fields...) So where IS this person? The friend who told me about the hints couldn't help because they're in sandy.
I'd ask someone else in game but I honestly can't find ANYONE on Caitsith server who can/will tell me anything about chocobos. It's getting a little frustrating...

The NPC appears during future "short walk" cutscenes (and the longer types of walks if those options are available to you). He/She will have a chance to appear, randomly, up to 3 times (once per walk) to give 3 different clues. If you get the answer wrong, you can repeat the quest again after randomly finding the chick again during a future walk.

The "lost chick" NPC is found in the city area where the stables are located.

hey guys I know this is a thread thats mostly about chocobo raising, but seeing as I can't find much info on it online-wise I'd thought I see what you guys know. I've been racing my chocobo some and he's done pretty well. Just yesterday he won the race top race in bastok against Cid's team chocobo, thus earning a bronze medal and chocorookie title. I suspected that the next day I'd be able to do another mission race, but sadly there was not one under the list or races to participate in. Is that all for mission races??? I know it is possible to swtich teams but they're still pretty much the same races... Hopefully someone has the info for me or can at least point me in the right direction.

On day 9 my chick went from Substandard to poor strength after 2 short walks and 2 Carrot paste.

Nothing more.

Some comments and observations regarding recent and past developments:

Something I discovered about the Chocobo Circuit racing: My Chocobo is Average discernment. However, after entering it into a C4 race, I checked the Paddock and found it was listed as "A Bit Deficient". The racing form had just recently been updated, and was still listed as Average discernment upon checking the care NPC. Upon closer inspection, the change was apparently due to choice of a Grass Saddle. This speed-improving saddle is listed as requiring discernment to use, and apparently actually lowers that stat (for the duration of the race).

The mental stats seem to be much more important in Circuit racing. Many of the NPC chocobos have some sort of attack item equipped, so a lot of stuff gets thrown around during a race. Also, during one race the paddock information showed an NPC chocobo as having abilities "Gallop & Gallop". Not sure if this is a bug, or if they really can double up on an ability. That particular bird had low stats, and didn't do particularly well in any case.

Intensive care plans have been reported as taking anywhere from 4-6 uses to increase a chocobo a level. After playing around a bit, I believe this is not always due to a chocobo being "partway leveled" through a tier, or the intensive care being random in it's effectiveness. Rather, it is possible that the reported tiers are actually relative and variable -- that "Average" is a proportion of the chocobo's maximum limits, will vary between two different birds. This is an unproven conjecture of course, but it has already been observed that chocobos of the same Stat tier can have different top speeds.

It has already been reported that after using directed Intensive Training a number of times, you will be informed that further use will reduce an existing stat (For my chocobo, this took an estimated 23-25 sessions). However, using the random Intensive Training after this does not give any such message. I'm unsure if it is merely an omission on SE's part, or if it actually can go higher. Upon receiving the message, I did a few more random sessions before my chocobo retired. My chocobo did not visibly improve, but it did not drop either -- the number of random sessions was not enough to boost/drop it either way.

Another change regarding chocobos: when you retire a chocobo, the bird's name will now appear on the plaque they give you. This is only for recently retired chocobos; no retroactive changes have been made to the plaques of previously retired birds.

Im willing to update the main page. Ive retired from FFXI but still on the boards. If someone has the intend to write an update I can add (or replace) the first page and credit the one who made it.

Just post it here and PM me. I will link the post and copy the content.

I am sorry for not being able to keep this up to date myself. But with the birth of my son I cant find the time to play FFXI.

I just figured out the elemental strengths of the chocobo racing trophies tonight, after doing some mix-and-match comparisons with the rest of my moghouse furniture.

CS Gold Cup = Wind 4
CS Mythril Cup = Wind 3
CS Bronze Cup = Wind 2

-Guppy

Edit: Added info to FFXIclopedia.

Did you notice the plaques have elemental strengths too depending on color of choco?

Makes me wonder if the color of the choco has an effect on it's strengths on different days. For instance in digging. Would be interesting to check out.
