Place this in your "SquareEnix" folder (c:\program files\playonline\square enix\". Copy the below line into notepad, save it as "RegFFXIdll.bat", and save. Then run it. It will register all .DLL files within that directory and all sub directories.
Quote:
FOR /R %%G IN (*.dll) DO regsvr32 /s %%G

rather than using the quoted commands below. It does the same thing, but just in case they add a .dll sometime in the future, etc, this will hit them all. And it's a lot less to remember ^^

Quote:

regsvr32 "FINAL FANTASY XI\FFXi.dll" /s
regsvr32 "FINAL FANTASY XI\FFXiMain.dll" /s
regsvr32 "FINAL FANTASY XI\FFXiResource.dll" /s

I said I'd report back on my results. Well...

I wasn't exactly sure what to do with all of the "regsvr32" commands, so I took the safe route and installed from scratch. Admittedly, I don't have much experience with registry editing, and I didn't want to mess things up.

Just out of curiosity I tried the OP's method tonight after one of my periodic HDD wipes reorganizations. It didn't work for me, and here's the 2 reasons why:

After finishing the steps he described, I attempted to run polboot.exe. Got an error message saying classes weren't registered. Makes sense.. FFXI has a LOT of classes in the registry.

That's only 8% of them BTW o.O!

And yes, I happened to have a full reg file handy so I imported portions of it piece at a time until I got FFXI working right.

So, attempting to run polboot.exe after merging this Classes.reg file (filesize was 152K) reulted in POL booting up... kind of..

Except that a Windows Installer box popped up with it, telling me that I was attempting to access content that was on a drive that wasn't available and that my ISscript.Msi needed to be installed. I attempted installing the updated version of this but still got the message.

So... I had to merge my UseData entries...

That was 5% of the UserData entries btw. The filesize was nearly double the Classes.Reg, rounding out at an impressive 250K.

After I merged that registry file, FFXI was up and running perfectly. No install. No update. No file check. Bitmapping enabled. Gamepad enabled and preconfigured. Resolution configured. Macros intact. Screenshots intact. Even my spells were still manually sorted the way I had em last.

Total process (-trial and error of trying to follow this guide and filling the gaps piecemeal) was about 12 minutes. From the time I rebooted Windows after installing graphics drivers, to the time I was in Whitegate. 12 minutes.

I plan on releasing something after the next version update for those few hearty souls who've supported my clumsy progs in the past. :)

*edit*
Whoops, forgot about my Add/Remove Programs and Folders registry entries. That's another 125K. Bringing the total registry file size to over half a megabyte, or approximately 110 pages of text in Microsoft Word! That's a lotta damn registry lol.

Yeah its really annoying. And SE would be able to fix this if they offered alternate download locations for the patches. >.>

Usually what I do is:

1) Reinstall from my disc's
2) Copy a backed up folder over that install overwriting files
3) There is no step 3

Not as fast but a bit less of a headache.

Ya a lot of people do it the way the above poster does. This saves all your macros and stuff, and saves you from having to download any updates but..

You still have to do a 20,000 file check and then FFXI has to install all those files.

What I'm working on is a way to automate incorporating current registry entries so that you run one installer file, and boom! You're done. Double click and log right in w/o running multiple install discs, performing any file checks or updates.

The version I released in May did accomplish this, and even created shortcuts, but it was clumsy and didn't work for everyone.

I've been preparing an updated registry file in anticipation of the Jan update. I know, I promised to release something in Nov when WoTG came out, but heh, I got too busy actually playing with the new content.

So I'll have something uploaded within a few days after the Jan update. :D

As old as this thread is it just saved me so much time from reinstalling, it even worked fine on Vista. Just to add some points for those with the EU version - besides obviously changing the "PlayOnlineUS" keys to "PlayOnlineEU", you also need to change these .bat file lines to include the proper EU dll filenames:

regsvr32 "PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\com\appEU.dll" /s
regsvr32 "PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\com\polcoreEU.dll" /s

I've actually had some minor issues with my FFXI installation where it kept coming up with an install dialog box every time I loaded up the game from POL. After playing around with some of the settings shown here I've actually managed to FIX it and it no longer gives me the error. So thank's a ton!

I'm definetly making a copy of this information. It may well come in very handy someday.

Has anyone tried doing this with FFXI on an external/USB drive? I'm sure it would work, I'm wondering if there's any noticeable performance issues.

I just tried this and PlayOnline doesn't think XI is installed. Is this old post still valid?
#38 Aug 18 2009 at 3:49 PM Rating: Good
Not sure if its still valid, but I'd personally rather not mess around with the registry files at all. So I'll install PlayOnline and FFXI from disk to get the proper registry files in place, then copy over my old POL folder in its entirety. Playonline freaks out the first time you run it, and so does FFXI, but if you run a file check then after that everyone is peachy. Plus, you don't have to remember your POL password information this way . . .

I can't do that, FFXI is already installed on another partition. I just need to tell the computer it is installed.

You have to reinstall PlayOnline. If you install PlayOnline in the directory that FFXI is already installed to you should be able to log into PlayOnline and use the "Check Files" feature in the POL menu. Once it finishes checking files it should let you play.

I already did that. Check Files doesn't even show FFXI to select.
#42 Aug 18 2009 at 9:04 PM Rating: Good
I do not believe FFXI and Playonline will function in separate partitions. I run them on my Acer Aspire One as my backup computer, and I had to get a separate 16 gig card to be able to have them all in the same directory. It wouldn't let me put POL on the 8 gig internal hard drive and the game itself on another 8 gig card.

PlayOnline functions just fine in different partitions, FFXI should too. It just sees it as another HDD.
#44 Aug 18 2009 at 9:28 PM Rating: Good
Yeah, it's no problem to install Playonline a partition separated from the system disk, or on another hard drive. But POL and FFXI need to be in the same folder on the same disk or partition, together. I've never gotten them to work any other way. Maybe someone else has convinced the installer to put FFXI elsewhere, but I've never had any luck.

Try to modify the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnlineUS\InstallFolder (assuming you previously installed). It should have a value of your old install location, just point it to the new partition and you should be able to run Check Files.

I made sure that was pointing correctly before I imported the registry. Not sure why PlayOnline still doesn't think it's installed. PlayOnline works just fine though.

I hope someone can help, but I have tried everything I can think of to get this install working. And I like another user have no optical drive to reinstall from scratch. I get the (error:022) and it is extreamly frustrating. I exported the registry files, and registered the DLLs but still nothing.

Please help! I need my FFXI fix!

This works just fine, I've moved HDs with it 4 times at least.

Several notes, however.

1) If you are going from a 32 bit to 64 bit Windows install, you have to change
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnlineUS\whatever] to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\PlayOnlineUS\whatever] because FFXI is a 32 bit application

2) If you are moving to Vista / Windows 7, you need to run your .bat file to register those DLLs as an administrator. UAC will not prompt you when you run it, the registration will just silently fail.

#2 is why some people will say "I ran it but it says class not registered!", it's because the /s makes it silent, so you don't see the error message that you don't have permission to do this thing! Right click "Run as Administrator", problem solved.

I moved from an install on 32 bit Windows XP on D: to 64 bit Windows 7 on C:, no trouble, change D:\\ to C:\\, add the "Wow6432Node" to the registry keys, and run the register .bat file as Administrator, done. Forgot to run as administrator the first time, said "What, I registered those files!" then realized my mistake ;)

Edit: I had the wrong name for the Wow6432Node key.

Anyways, I am complete idiot when it comes to computers. Can anyone explain what this all means like their trying to explain it to a 3rd grader. I don't need to know how to do it, just what it does exactly>.>;

Very nice! I usually just install the first disks which are the pol viewer and the main ffxi game.
This properly installs the pol viewer and the main game, then i copy the "SquareEnix" folder (which has everything - pol, ffxi, zilart, cop, etc etc) and paste over the new installation.
Might need to configure but just start up and a small downloaded update is done (like 3 files) and your done.

Posting in here so I can find it later; upgrading to Win7 sometime.

Also, will the directory structure remain intact inside the windows.old folder, so I can just copy-paste all of PlayOnline?
