Expansions, Updates, SOMETHING?!Follow

You can't please all the people all the time...devs in any mmo have to consider at least these usual groups of diverse interests:

- <Long time><veterans> = wants new content and new stuff to do.

- Your hardcore endgamers = want more challenge and more loots.

- Your casual players = want a fast track to catch up with the veterans or keep up with with the hardcore players.

- Your new players = need tutorials and a reasonable learning curve.

- Your WoW converts = need a lot

And so many more individual interests from game to game you can't even imagine...

And there's no answer, or solution, or end, it's a constant struggle for balance, and devs trying to please as many people as they can most of the time.

---> No matter how easy you make it, there's someone that will say it's too hard.

---> No matter how hard you make something, there are some losers out there that have no lives and will fight that boss for 18 hours straight only to fail

---> Every single change, no matter how minute and seemingly insignificant, sends ripples throughout your game. It's like the butterfly wing flap that causes a tidal wave on the other side of the world.

Ok..

I see people have started talking about Western and Eastern ideas for MMORPGs, and also the old Dungons and Dragons table top game.

A couple of weeks a ago I found a very interesting essay on all these tree issues. For this reason I have taken the time to find the link for the essay, and will not post it here. It might shed some light on why FF-XI is the way it is.

That was an interesting read so thanks for digging it up. It's very useful to be aware of the long history of gaming in this genre to be able to put things into better context. His best point was the reasons he gave for why WRPGs seem to evolving faster at the moment, because they always had a different vision based on old table top games. That said, I definitely didn't agree with everything he said, not by a long shot.

In CRPGs, stats MUST be hidden from the player

I've never met or heard of anyone in the videogame industry who realizes this. The reason why stats are so prominent in real-life RPGs is because SOMEONE has to make the necessary calculations, and without the help of a computer the players are forced to do this boring work themselves.
Totally disagree. This is obviously what he wants, but players oftentimes enjoy configuring and maximizing their stats in the best possible way just as much as the story. If he wants to call this a strategy RPG for that reason, that's fine. He's still getting too hung up on the terms and the genre names.

You may think I am judging them too harshly, perhaps?
Way, way too harshly. This guy obviously hates all Final Fantasy games and JRPGs, which puts him in a separate category from every person on this forum.

I got that letter too...nothing new was on it (but nothing new is usually on it).

SE has always been slow to release new content and provide updates but this is slow even by their standards.

You know what's crazy? I got the same news letter... TWICE!

That's right! Maze Mongers X2! All new only exactly the same! this just in from Square Enix, welcome to the December update #2! Now you can revisit the same events you got sick of after trying twice back in December, only now with all new colors on the crab mobs!
