If the big announcement is going to be 'more MMM', 'more pankration' or 'more chocobo racing', I won't have to check Alla for news.. I check CNN :)

Announcing something related to this tomorrow?
We'll see.

That's interesting, SE does like to name the same expansion differently in Japan to elsewhere (and maybe other regions too?) so perhaps that's why there's different names. Wasn't Wings of the Goddess called Heroes of the Goddess or Altana or something in Japan?

Perhaps that's their super omg announcement they seem to be hyping (seriously, it better not suck, I can just see it being something to do with FFXI-FFXIV relations)

Yeah, Divine Soldiers of Altana, according to Wikipedia.

Yes, what you've heard is true. FFXI's endgame is just a giant E-peen swinging contest, with the majority of time spent standing around, and watching Moon-faced nerds "compare" video game "accomplishments" with each other via flame-wars on forums/in-game.
^^^^^^^^^^^^ So True.

Could be three more "mini-expansions?" I sure hope not, lest they actually be expansions. Perhaps they're trying something new and cutting a real expansion into 3 parts somehow, maybe to drag it out for a while the way they've been doing with WotG.

Either way, I'd love to see an expansion comparable to ToAU as far as new content is concerned, with all new zones that span across entire region maps.

This is something Square Enix tends to do that for important releases such as ...Perhaps, Abyssea is a new Square Enix franchise then? That’s one possibility. The pie in the sky idea I have is a new series of Final Fantasy XI scenarios. VanaFest 2010 is this weekend and Square Enix is bound to announce something new about their eight year old MMO.

Not this!! We don't want freaking scenarios, SE!!!! We want 3 complete, fully developed expansions that each won't take 3+ years to be completed by you!!!!!

May be nothing related to XI, and instead a new thing they are working on.
We'll find out tomorrow whatever the "big surprise" is.

You gotta admit it's rather odd this surfaced on Feb.26th, just 2 days before the Feb. 28th announcement.

These 3 names follow established SE naming conventions for FFXI expansions.

Rise of The Zilart
Chains of Promathia
Treasures of Aht Uhrgan
Wings of The Goddess

A of X. > Heroes of Abyssea
B of Y. > Scars of Abyssea
C of Z. > Vision of Abyssea

Pretty easy to notice the trend. It's still kind of odd to me that, if these are the names for 3 new stupid mini-add-on-scenarios, that the names are similar to the names of full expansions and not the names of the 3 mini-addons released during 2009.

A Crystalline Prophecy
A Moogle Kupo D'Etat
A Shantotto Ascension

Maybe I am looking for things where they are not, but hey, we can all speculate a bit till tomorrow.

Well, so was "Blood of Bahamut" which turned out to be a JP only DS game by SE, among other things we thought were future expansions.

Given the name and timing though, I'm willing to bet a few gil those registered names are in relation to FFXI.

Abyssea doesn't even sound like a FFXI word. Areas tend to have straight forward names "Bhaflau Thickets", "Wajoam Woodlands" or have mithra names "Zi'Tah", "San d'Oria".

San d'Oria is a mithra name? Smiley: dubious

It could very well be covering bases trademark wise. I know Pokemon has sat on other colors name wise since Blue and Red way back in 1998 which never saw the light of day.

Not exactly the same, but hey who knows.

I'm really hoping they aren't boneheaded enough to make more add-on scenarios.

SE also registered the French name 'Abyssé Terre Defendue' and the German name 'Verbotene Welt Abyssea'.

The German title is interesting. It's basically means "Forbidden World". I'm not so sure about the french title.

Sounds "expansiony" but I'm still very skeptical to the whole thing.

I'm actually pretty shocked Kazham is named Kazham. You'd think it'd be called Kazhaoupundapiloh or something stupid like that.
