Motivation to PlayFollow

#1 Jul 13 2016 at 11:07 AM Rating: Excellent
Hey all,

First off, this is not a "FFXI is dying!" thread or a "OMG why are you still playing?" thread.

I've been quiet on these forums for a long time, mainly because my focus has been much more on XIV for the past couple years -- to the point that when I log into XI, I feel like I barely know which way is up. But I still log in on occasion, still chip away at unfinished story missions, still do light grinding to upgrade my gear. The game is much quieter than it used to be, and my old linkshell is loooong gone. Still, I plan on sticking around at least until I finish off all the storyline content in front of me.

Which brings me to my question... after finishing the storyline -- and I'm sure many of you have -- what motivates you to continue playing?

Do you have awesome in-game friends? Are you a role-player with a storyline that transcends the game? Do you just really enjoy XI's battle system and battle content? Will you not rest until you've crossed all the most difficult fights off your list?

I'm in a strange place because my motivating factor (other than in-game friends, who mostly left long ago) is usually storyline. I'll always love FFXI, and I'd honestly love to continue playing, but I figure it's kind of a moot point if I don't really feel inspired.

And that got me thinking what keeps others around... especially since most longtime vets (who play more consistently than I do) probably beat all the storyline content long ago.

So, what keeps you going? What floats your boat? And what is it about SE's handling of the game that gives you ongoing hope for the future? What keeps your adventuring spirit of Vana'diel alive?

My general motivator is just knowing I have something I can do even if I'm just logging in for 30m or so. So, while XI allows that to a degree, it's not what I'd call the most time efficient way of progressing. You just really need a stable core of friends to chip deeper into the i119 tier and master a given job if you haven't already. Downside is that's really difficult to do if you're on one of the less active servers.

Would really hope they revisit the idea of mergers soon, but also the transfer fee. Eliminate the latter and people would be better poised to find that group that works for them. Additionally, if one of your old friends does come back, it be easier for them to rejoin you instead of having to pony up even more cash not quite knowing if they intend to stick with the game for an appreciable amount of time.

My motivation to play:

I can log into FFXI and have a million things I can do and literally not enough time to do all I want in any given day, meaning I'm driven to log in and play, I have something to push towards (Aeonic Weapons atm) and I still have my friends around. Even playing since the 2001 beta I still always find something interesting I can do or work towards. I can take a break and come back and still pick up where I left off without worrying about if I'm obsoleted.

Largely why I hated Abyssea because I finally got all of my sets for the 75 era for my BLU and DNC then you could just buy something better, let alone the later Empyrean armor sets, but it was just another goal to strive toward.

The BIGGEST factor though is that XI feels like a world and always have you wondering about xyz even when you're traveling through it. It feels like it "exists" and not just there out of obligation like other MMO worlds.

I played FFXI for five years from '06-'11. I didn't give a damn about exp/hr or endgame. I didn't touch Kings with a 40' pole. When ToAU came out I didn't care about Salvage, Einhergar, etc. etc. all I cared about was helping players with things like AF and subjob items, CoP missions, and Dynamis. Then the Add-Ons came out and
they were terrible. The Crystal one was the worst. Then Abyssea came out and shot the level cap to 99 and trivialized everything the last seven years all at once,
with an expansions that only existed to house loot pinatas, not to mention all the game breaking stuff. Exp loss became meaning less so the joy in going to Raise
someone was gone. And people played the game for experience points and merits for the sake of experience points and merits.

I have played WoW during WoTLK and WoD eras, and stop when raiding was about "heals per second" and numbers for the sake of numbers. Aion I ran with Our Blood Our Team but everything in the world of Aion is completely forgettable. Then there was FFXIV: ARR. Three years ago I would have defended the game like I did FFXI back in the day, until hunts came out, and people showed their true colors. Nothing in Eoreza makes me want to stay there, as the people in it are selfish and violent; you think having a frigging meteor dropped on the whole continent would have taught them something, but nope... once we defeat the Evil Empire its back to backstabbing and political intrigue.

I came back in FFXI why? Because now I can play FFXI on my own terms. I kind of gave up being a helpful a long time ago, but nothing I have fills the void that other worlds can fill (other than Skyrim). All of the ******** are gone; I can do all the story and I'm in a linkshell with a few good people. No more "we need more BLMs", no more "perfect party setup", no more "I don't tank, my focus is melee". It's just me and the game. Sometimes that makes me sad, but I think its better this way, because
gamers in MMos can't thinkfor themselves anymore. Those that do know where do find me.

I remember you, Clefairy. Good to see a familiar face. Smiley: smile

Are you on Lakshmi?

Lakshmi feels exceptionally quiet, but I do have a few friends in the game who've been around for quite a long time. I also discovered Ambuscade this weekend, so I've had some fun with that.

Still looking for that motivation though to go beyond the ends of the storyline. I guess I have some time to figure it out. Given my busy life (and the fact that it's summertime), I won't be blowing through Seekers anytime soon.

Asura is the current metropolis of XI and the population there feels more like the old days. Except of course the outdoor zones are still empty. Valkurm Dunes being a ghost town is a real vibe killer.

Odin has a solid population too from what I remember, but mostly Japanese.

As for what motivates me: the world, the story, the nostalgia. All the classic FF elements. I just love Vana'diel. And like Hio said there's always something that needs to be done, the only problem is these days you'll be doing most of those things alone, unless you're part of a strong LS.

Not playing XI atm but I've been thinking about starting a character from scratch and going through all the missions. It's been a while.

I'm actually enjoying the leveling grind. I'm able to do it at my own pace without having to be an in-demand job or wait for a BRD to pop. I can get up and pee whenever I want to too, which is nice.

Currently leveling DRK (a job I previously once waited 16 hours looking for an exp party for) and BLU. DRK is normal leveling for when I feel like turning my brain off and just killing things, BLU is all spell collection all the time.

Trying to progress through Rhapsodies, but Adoulin is squarely in my way. The current mission I'm on requires me to get to a place that I can't actually figure out how to get to and then to do a colonization reive, probably alone, which I'm not sure I can actually do. So that's on hold for now while I wait for inspiration to fall out of the sky.

I'll put a caveat in place here that while I'm still playing XI, most of my attention these days goes to a private server (can I say that without getting banned/struck by lightning?) of it. I do still have an account on XI and log in to do quests and talk to the 3 friends I have left though.

But as for what draws me? The world and the combat. It's a huge open world with danger in some parts, where other parts are calm and soothing to just hang out in. I love the combat, it's basically why I quit FFXIV, I want turn based, slower combat where I can talk to my friends and enjoy myself, not frantically dodge and hit the buttons like I'm playing Street Fighter. XI, especially the 75 and 99 era version, works well for me in feeling like a game I can play for hours without getting button fatigue.

I've been able to easily clear colonization reives with my trusts out. But I don't know if the reives get harder as you go. So far, I'm just midway through the second group of Adoulin missions.

Someone like Hio could probably give you a better answer about how far you can get without help.

Assuming Sparks gear, you should be able to solo colonization rieves until you get past Marjami Ravine. From there, it's more a matter of what job/trusts you have at your disposal. Lair rieves are another matter, as some of it further depends on what mobs you're looking at. I didn't personally hit a snag on my BLU until I hit Ra'Khaznar, as it's that point the colonization rieve repops are fast enough alongside the shadow mobs being more dangerous (especially NIN/RNG types).

Think when I'd paused SoA missions before RoV finished up, or at least got later in, I'd just done the sewer BC where Arciela fights with you against some people. Not the Balamor BC, which comes later.

I just miss the good old days. Waiting for Party, progressing from 12-ish to 20 in the dunes, those were some good times. Not sure I really like the state of the game right now with soloing all the way until you start doing end game with other humans. But what can we expect. The low level area isn't gonna be really populated anymore is it. In a sense a few private servers are providing us old-schoolers a much better playing experience right now.

Yeah, even if they can manage a few dozen at peak times, the true "good old days" experience of 3000+ on per server can't hope to be emulated without some form of modification to the economy and other factors. On one hand, yeah, it's cool you'll never find a congested camp, but on the other, finding people wanting to do exactly what you want is just that much harder.

Either way, my general stance on that scene is I wish people weren't so fixated on the 75 cap and better strove to catch up to retail.

I want to come back to this game all the time. I actually have 4 years of accumulated play time with FFXI (this includes a lot of time standing afk with my bazaar.) I still have dreams about wielding my old Joyeuse and bounding across Konschtat Highlands on my chocobo with my old friends. I like to believe that, when I die, my consciousness will continue to exist in some perfect recreation of Vana'diel as it would exist if it were a real place.

Something is stopping me, though. I can't even figure out what it is. It used to be I could not afford the monthly subscription, or I was too busy with work-- but these days I have all the time and money in the world to do whatever I want, and I still can't bring myself to log in. I keep thinking, "It'll always be there. You can play later." --but then years go by and I miss out on a lot. Whenever I do play after a long break, I find myself struggling to keep up with years worth of new content and changes.

In writing this, I think I have figured it out on my own... FFXI used to be something I played alone-- only with friends and linkshell mates from in game. It was nearly a decade in before I met my wife and got her to play it with me. It was something we bonded over a lot and we both love. I think the reason I haven't played much lately is because whether I play or not is now dependent on whether or not she wants to play, too. --and when we do play, I'm constantly having to wait for her because doing content without her is an unspoken taboo. I think maybe it would be ok if I just played the game again without worrying about when she is sleeping or doing other things. Surely once she sees me playing again she will want to as well, but that'd be fine. I can always go back to help her with things she needs.

I think some time this fall I will come back. I might move to Asura or some other server even though Sylph has been my home since 2004.

Been getting a vicious itch to get back on this game, but dont even know where or how to start. I played on PS2, then PS3. Cant even say when the last time I played was, but the last thing I remember doing was those FoV books in ...Cape Terrigan (sp?). I think WoTG came out and it kind of lost me because I bought it and screwed up the install. So I started snooping around and rediscovered this site and am hopeful to see that there are indeed still ppl playing. I have many questions and was gonna make a thread until I found this one. Sry if this gets long winded, and for hijacking the thread, but no game has quite had the impact on my mind like this one. Dark Souls would have to be the closest contender, but in a different way. I played 14 from Early Access up until Heavensward exp, and while it was nice and new and shiny, even that still couldnt touch 11 in terms of satisfaction from completing a long grind of exp or farming, or sense of accomplishment from just making it through a high lvl zone on foot because you couldnt ride a bird yet. And then the music. Ive compiled a playlist of all my old faves from this game on youtube and often let it play while I work, or sometimes just relax to it. That maybe one of the biggest reasons for this itch actually. Anyway I have many questions.

1. I have to play on PC now. Ive read somewhere on here about how it runs kind of crap on newer machines now. Knowing next to nothing on PC's, is there anything particular I should be looking for to get this game to run well? Was going to maybe get someone to build me one, or maybe just pick up a decently priced one from Best Buy somewhere.

2. I understand the game population is very much depleted, which sucks for a game geared toward cooperation, but it also seems you can get quite a ways on your own now, which is what I enjoyed doing anyway. Not that im anti social, im often just too lazy to type a pile while playing, and also with limited playing time (pretty much after kids go to bed until about midnight) being depended on by other ppl to achieve something might be hard for me. That being said, there will come times when some help would be nice (like getting my subjob items). Judging from a few comments Asura is the place to be now? Dunes/Qufim/Jungle parties are a thing of the past now? Sad if true, but again im fine by myself. Just dying to run through the world again.

3. Content. Might be a stupid question but with all the new add ons since I last played, has any old content been deleted? Can I still find that vendor in Sandy who will give me a meager amt of gil for 5 rabbit pelts? Do you still gain fame in each city for completing missions and quests? Can I still hold my breath sneaking through Ordelles Caves waiting for the AF chest to pop at the right time to get my gear, or gather the items to upgrade my gobbie bag? I basically would just love to replay the game and do all the old stuff I did way back in '02 when I first started.

4. Economy/Crafting. Obviously, again, this is something that has taken a hit, but is there still reason to farm a stack of silk thread to put it up for sale? Do ppl still craft and need supplies for it? Is there any pt in logging at the base of Ghelsba for hours and getting a little too excited when I get an "Elm Log"?

That probably covers everything I need to know to come back. Not worried about all this dynamis, abbysea stuff just yet. Ill get to it and learn it if and when I have too. Any clarification and guidence here would be much appreciated. Thanks. Gonna go listen to the Gustaberg track on repeat now.

Hello,
I have played ffxi on and off since it's release in 2002.
I am back with 2 of my friends, and I am having as much fun as I ever did!!!!!
I transferred over to Asura server because I researched where the most players are, and it is rockin!!!
There is still over 2.5 million accounts and over 10k very active players on asura if not more.
There are new players everywhere.
I started OVER FROM SCRATCH, and having a fantastic time.
I read over the returning to vana diel wiki and following that.
So I created a char, leveled up to lvl 5, got a trust whm to heal me.
Then I started the ROV quests to get rhaposides of white, then just got rank 3 in windy.
Last night i had two escort me to Jeuno and we laughed the whole time and had such a blast.
Then we partied in Quifim and wiped by the banshee lmao.
There are plenty of old school people out there that still are having fun fun fun.
I have a ffxiv account and play some but I can't seem to care much about it.
On the other hand I WILL ALWAYS LOVE FFXI!!!!!
COME BACK!! WE NEED YOU!!!!

re: Clayton

While XI may occasionally have issues with newer machines, the horror stories seem more on the minimal side. My advice here would simply be to pick up the game download from SE's site and give it a whirl. If you do have problems, perhaps we can troubleshoot. But oftentimes it's something like making sure you have DX8 installed, disabling antivirus (if only when playing), or possibly utilizing an older driver for your video card. In context, some may also think the game "runs like crap" because it's not normally coded to go beyond 30 fps, among other lingering PS2 limitations with the engine.

Otherwise, no content has been removed save the rotating Ambuscade challenges. I guess some might argue about bugs/exploits here and there, but I wouldn't worry about those. And since you quit during WotG, you'll have a fair bit of stuff to do to pass the time, among them getting to 99 if you haven't already. As for the economy, it's probably safe to say the more mundane ingredient demand is "dead" these days. If you're itching for gil while soloing, farming RME currency is usually the best option for the time. You might have other alternatives, but they'd require the right job(s) and gear, which you likely won't get right away.

At the very least, I think it's worth a peek back to go through SoA and RoV.

1 - it run fantastic on pc, not sure where you heard otherwise. I would just lookup system requirements and go get one from best buy.
2. We still do dunes, quifim, mines parties. You can do whatever you want and there is plenty of people that want to do that too. Asura is the best server to be on imo.
3. I don't think any content has been deleted. At least I haven't found anything to be gone and not read anything either.
4. Not sure, my wind crystals sold within an hour yesterday for 2k.

Well, if you're shopping for a new PC, just be mindful you don't need some $2000 cutting edge rig. If you're really getting it just for XI, I wouldn't spend more than a few hundred on a budget system, as pretty much anything made within the past 10 years should run it fine. Of course, if you're interested in other PC games, then by all means, dig a bit deeper.

If you pick something up from Best Buy or whatever, there's a good chance it won't be optimized for gaming even if the box may say it is. One of the key features you'll want to look out for in this case is whether or not the video card is integrated to the motherboard or affixed to one of the PCI slots. The latter is what you should strive for if you're looking more to gaming, as it also affords the flexibility of swapping the card out and upgrading to a better one if you find it doesn't meet your criteria. And if you do wind up shopping specifically for video cards, I'd budget in the $150-300 range, which will put a lot of things about 2-3 years old by now. Nvidia also tends to be the more widely accepted brand, even though you'll find AMD fans and such here and there.

There are also mountains of guides written on how to make FFXI look better on a PC. The stronger the better, but you can always do better than the 2002 PS2 limitations land the game defaults to.

Holy crap im in. I forgot how painful this whole process was. Gonna need a good session to get used to cntrls and menus again. This keyboard/mouse thing is very different. May end up getting a controller somewhere. Anyway, look for "Chrike" on Asura. Started in Sandy, just like 13 years ago.

Yeah, they don't make the set up very easy and the whole update process is still hellishly sluggish even from their offered install. Recently had to help someone set up their own character simply because they couldn't quite seem to get it down.

Anyway, have fun and be sure to take advantage of RoE objectives for leveling and what not.
