Greetings, Allakhazam.com community!

During September 2006, we conducted a survey on linkshell communities via the official FINAL FANTASY XI website. We gathered over 10,000 responses, which is a huge success. We are greatly pleased to have heard so much from our players. We would like to take this opportunity to share the results of the survey with you.

On November 28th, 2006, we will be making the beta version of the new “FINAL FANTASY XI Linkshell Community” service available. This new version is based on feedback from the aforementioned survey, the discussions we’ve seen across all the premier sites worldwide, and the many comments and suggestions we have received via the mail forms.

We have carefully considered how much time and work it will take to make the changes and additions we want for the current linkshell community. As a result, we have decided to roll out the new calendar and auto-login features now, along with a few changes to the way the community currently works.

The New Calendar Feature

A calendar has been added to each community. To register an event, select the date that you will be holding the event from your community’s calendar, then simply enter the required information such as “Preferred number of participants” and “Recruiting period.” Configure options such as whether or not you will be holding this event more than once, and event registration is complete.

Events registered on the calendar come in two types: “Looking For Participants,” where you can receive applications from members interested in participating in the event, and “Event Announcement,” which can be used to simply announce the details of an event.

You can configure event display settings for both of the above types to either be displayed just to community members or you can announce your event on the World Portal (by setting your event’s display settings to “Display on World Portal (public)”), much in the same way you would use “/shout” in the game, to recruit participants from all over your World.

The "auto-login" Feature

Normally when logging in, you have to enter your PlayOnline ID and password every time you log in, but by enabling auto-login, you can simplify this process. Auto-login can be enabled or disabled for any account*.

For security purposes, the auto-login feature does not use your PlayOnline ID and password, but instead uses a special form of encryption.

*An account on the Linkshell Community refers to the combination of a character’s World, participating community, and the member him/herself. Because of this, a user can possess multiple accounts and use them separately.

Changes to the World Portal

The “New Community” section on the world portal has been changed to “Linkshell Event Information.”

This new section was created for those of you who have thought, "I’d like to participate in an event," :I’d like to recruit party members to participate in my event," or "I’d like to pick a day where I can host an event with other linkshell members." Using linkshell event information, you can easily check any of the multiple events currently planned.

Besides the new features and design changes described above, we are also planning to improve and add other features in the future.

We still want to hear more from the FINAL FANTASY XI community, and the special premier site forums are where you can make yourself heard. As we head into the official release of the new "FINAL FANTASY XI Linkshell Community," we hope you will enjoy using it as much as we enjoy running it.

Please use this thread to discuss what you think about their Linkshell Community Beta release.

I really like the calandar idea. That will help people with knowing what exactly is going on. More importantly, exactly *how* it is taking place. Sometimes I feel like I'm wandering around aimlessly and I find out about these things after the fact...

I want the ability to read the page with something like cURL (or any other page-grabber)
I've been trying for some time using the PHP cURL library to open the page and parse it (as anonymous guest, same as logging in as guest) but the server keeps giving errors.
I want that data on my LS's website without having to update it manually

How about SE stopping putting it off and Release a Englis and european version of the Playonline Chat Program... IMO the LS Community was a Failure. Each shell im on stopped useing it the day they registered the shells.. Great intentions but the lack of who's online now and as everyone mentions the lack of LS Chat pretty much made it less then nessacery. Not saying its not usefull since ive used it to find oter links web sites but pretty limited. So yea stop putting it off and release the English Friend's list client!!!

Chat Messenger again!
Btw thank you for making the Linkshell Community. It has made it a lot easier to coordinate things and even to bring some linkshells closer together when we try to plan multiple inter-linkshell-cooperative events.

The only thing that I use the LSC for is to find out what level jobs I have.. (I have trouble remembering exact levels that my jobs are on.. especially if I haven't leveled that job in a while.)

If I had a linkshell.. (every one I join seems to break apart.. the world is very silent, now..) I would use the community more only if they put in chat from the web to the shell.

I am lazy. So the auto login feature was much needed.

I agree the chat feature would be great. With windower progams being against the ToS (I think, haven't read that thing in years), it's needed. If I wasn't really in the mood to play one night, it would be a huge help to my ls if I could still talk them through some quest or mission, while I was playing poker or downloading ****, whatever I decide to do in my spare time. And there's also the huge number of times I've not felt like playing but logged into the game anyway just to check on the people in the LS. I'm in a very close social ls, some of these guys are as good if not better friends than my rl ones. So the chat feature would be great. Honestly, I'd even be willing to pay a reasonable ammount for access to it.

I think this update is awesome!

The Worldwide event calendar is something this game's needed for a long time.

There is one addition I'd like to see. The ability to filter events based on language. It would be sweet if the auto-translate function could be added, but I'd be happy with just being able to filter out the languages I can't read.

I'm sure this would be a useful feature for users from everywhere who might prefer to have their calendar only display events written in languages they can understand.

I'm not thinking so much about the new updates but more of the general sites security issues or believed issues that still remain un-addressed but are much more pressing than new features. What's the use of new features if people are too scared to login?

I really don't like the way they force us to use our PlayOnline ID to login to the site. It seems rather insecure to me, if somebody uses a scam site or third party browser using tool they can easily steal your information and then they instantly have total access to your account.

Wouldn't it be more secure to have a section of the PlayOnline Viewer where you could define a "web interface login" when you enter a login name and password to be used on the Official PlayOnline websites instead of your PlayOnline ID?

I'm not entirely sure about the current security risks but it doesn't really matter if they are real or not. You can tell people it's secure as much as you like but they will not listen. What matters is the public perception of the interface.

I'm just fed up of not having linkshell members login to events and discussions using the otherwise brilliant tool because they are 'scared' to login to it because of security issues.

I think my idea would fix a lot of that worry, a separate login (hence forth called web id) that is linked to your PlayOnline ID and can be defined from PlayOnline Viewer but you can not use that web id to gain access to your actually game account and sensitive data.

I have been meaning to feed back on this for a while, what do you guys think?

I haven't heard any complaint about security fears, but I think you have some good ideas. Anything that will make people more comfortable using this tool would be great.

I only wish this kind of web tool for FFXI had been part of the original release.

Being able to view the crafting skills of a character is helpful, but I think it'd be nice to see the combat, and magic skills as well.

Aside from personal knowledge of one's own character, it could also help setting up Skill-up parties.
