Questions, possible new playerFollow

#1 Jan 03 2008 at 4:08 PM Rating: Default
Hey, im a WoW player right now. I recently got the PC that can run WoW and instantly signed up cuz all my friends were. Then I remember the FFXI box i bought a few years ago but didnt play cuz my PC couldnt handle it. Now im thinking of busting it out and playing just to see what its like. I have been stareing at it for years it seems.

But i have some questions. Hows the population? It seems everyone is playing WoW and I dont wanna go to a dead MMO.

Can you get into groups easy?

I heard it was a grind fest :O

I dont really know what else to ask, other than what is the subscription fee cuz i dont know what it is. and is it true it costs a dollar more a month for another character??

thanks!

The population is fine. You can get into parties easily. Yes it's a grind fest. The fee is um I dunno 12.95 in dollars or something and yes it costs a dollar extra per month for another character. Unlike WoW though, you can level all 20 jobs (classes) on one character.

The population is doing just fine. Just because WoW has a cluster@#%^ of people doesn't mean that any other game is dead without it. You actually run into a lot of problems with too many people.

Parties can be random, sometimes you get them instantly, sometimes you don't at all. Take initiative and form your own if need be.

It is a grind fest in the sense that leveling is a large portion of the game. However, it's also not just a straight up grind either, leveling can be fun too.

Yes, it costs an extra dollar for another character. However, since you can change jobs at will in towns, there's no need to create alts to play other jobs, so you don't really need to pack on extra characters for that particular reason.

I enjoy the diversity of the game. It doesn't just boil down to "endgame" and "leveling", though those are two large portions of it. Endgame could mean a sky LS, a sea LS, doing salvage/einherjar/limbus/dynamis, camping HNMs, etc. You could also spend time doing assaults during down time, leveling crafts, raising/racing a chocobo, spend time in Pankration, do gardening, work on chocobo digging, do a BCNM/KSNM run, fight in campaign, jump into a besieged, etc. Leveling just happens to be another big activity in the game.

To get any other job unlocked than Warrior, Thief, Monk, Red Mage, White Mage, or Black mage, you need to level one of those 6 jobs up to 30. If you really want to level Dark Knight, I suggest getting Monk to 18 (and unlocking subjobs), then Warrior to 30, then unlocking DRK and leveling that. Don't be so incredibly set on one job either, take the time to try other jobs, you might be surprised at the jobs you like to play.

Dark is one of the easiest (real boring) advanced quests in the game. Get to 30, kill 100 enemies and you are in.

It's a great job.

sweet, because outa every FF game, the dark knight has been my favorite class.

FFXI differs in that you are on a journey.

Get to level 18 and get your sub-job. You will find lots of high level players to help.

Get to level 20 and off to your Chocobo quest. This is wonderful for a newbie as it opens up almost all areas.

Now, need to level that sub. Get a job to 30 and you can get an advanced job such as drk, pld, brd, or rng.

Make lots of friends along the way and work on missions and fame.

This game is not as easy as WoW. You gotta work and die alot...

When you die you loose experience but I kinda like that more than running down a dead body!

Also, with linkshells (guilds) you can have more than one.

The Dunes is the pits and you need to go there as newbie as it teaches you how to play and not play your job. The level 20's and 30's are much better.

And, choose your character well. This is not like Wow in the aspect. Your one character can be any job or level any craft. If your like the game, your toon will be you for a long time...

I have a preference for Tara's and Elv's... each to their own!

You're quite lucky you joined during an expansion so the lower level areas should be humming quite a bit.

If you liked the Final Fantasy Series you'll probably enjoy this game, also it's worth noting that FFXI has some fantastic storylines and you'll find much to enjoy here if you like that aspect of the Final Fantasy Series.

Also for a shameless plug, Join Pandemonium Server.

There are a lot of things to do in this game, twenty jobs to choose from, There is PVP although more team based, massive battles such as Besieged and Campaign and a pretty healthy endgame. Personally I'm enjoying Campaign, I like making 2000 EXP without party.

Also check your messages, I sent you an offer for a gold world pass, may help out.(Again, another shameless plug)

There are actually many story lines to the game. If you count the story lines of quests then it's dozens upon dozens.

Each home nation has it's own storyline. Each expansion has it's own storyline. That's 6 big stories (well, CoP and ToAU were by far the best for storyline), that also all tie into the lore behind vana'diel.

There is a guide to them here: http://www.zera-studio.net/hov/

Though you can pick that all up through missions/quests. I'd actually suggest not reading too far to not actually spoil any of it for yourself, but it might be a handy starting point.

Get a silent oil or use your Dream Boots +1 and you're golden.

Oh and join Ragnarok, not Pandemonium.

World Passes were used to choose what server you wanted to join (a friend would get one from an NPC in game and give it to you, then you could join his server rather than get auto-assigned to one). They got rid of those and now you can just pick whatever server you want to join.

Gold World Passes still exist though, you get items after a while. I have a gold world pass for you for ragnarok if you decide to go there. Smiley: lol

The dispensed of that system awhile ago, it's now free choice over what server you want. However gold world pass is a pass that gives rewards for joining. See here

Yes make sure you pick the server with the name you like the best and pick a race/gender you like the best not because of their stats, thats what armor is for.

Theres not just one storyline, but several - each expansion comes with its own things that add to the storyline, better explaining some things and providing a wealth of challenges - and great rewards fof completeing them.

Other things I like about the game are the amazing range of landscapes - deserts, wastelands of ice, lushly vegetated jungles.

I love the fact theres always something to do - quests, missions, promies, skills to learn, places to visit - I dont think anyone, at all, (barring of course perhaps SE) can honestly say they've seen everything and done everything the game has to offer, unless they live plugged into their PC 24 hours a day.

If you join, and need a hand starting out, if you come to Leviathan, I'd be happy to give you a hand, I'm a restarter - I just couldn't stay away!

I recommend Ragnarok, because I'm on it, but also because they're all roughly the same. You don't need world passes anymore, but I'll give you a gold world pass if you really want a clock and airship. Smiley: lol
