Always remember- DRG can jump wayyyy in the air, but if something so much as a 7 inch curb obstructs their pathway, they're equally screwed.

Good.

The last thing I want to see is people bunny hopping all over the place.

If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

Wasn't so funny this time, After reading the title I was actually expecting a strip about players jumping the flaming hoops SE has lately forced us to.

I reckon the character designs in FF14 look quite stylish and elegant. If they were to bunny hop all around town, that sight will scar me for life.

I have no problem with the idea of my character jumping.

If they add crouching, however, I'm going to rage with a chainsaw against everyone who decides they want to teabag corpses.

At least it would be faster, takes noye FOREVER to /kneel enough times for him to be satisfied and raise me.

According to the preview on IGN, while we still won't be able to jump, minor "cliffs" like that won't really provide an obstacle.

Quote:
To my delight I found that my character, a female Elvaan hunter equipped with a giant bow, could actually move down and up small ridges on the landscape. If you didn't play FF XI and don't know why that matters, then don't worry about it. The game still blocks you from dropping longer distances, but as for roaming around on plains or slightly hilly terrain, it seems like smooth sailing. Or walking, rather.

If they don't want us going in a specific area or want us to take the looong way around to reach something they're just going to put in a bigger wall. Jumping in games like this really is a waste of code.

Finally, someone else who understands that jumping is purely cosmetic in most MMOs. If they want to block access and you can jump/fly/whatever, they are going to block access using those methods as well. Also, the cosmetics that are added by bunny hopping around town in full armor are hideous.

Really, I don't know of any game that's gotten it right. The jolt to immersion you get when you can't cross a tiny ledge is horrible and the jolt to immersion from never-ending 6' vertical leaps are equally bad. I wish someone would program a game with a "jump button" that activated only when adjacent to relevant terrain features and depicted characters doing basic vaulting, sliding, scrabbling or jumping up or down as needed.

ok, it isn't quite true that jumping is purely cosmetic, but it's 99%. You can pull off some weird kiting tricks with archery while jumping in WoW for instance, I'm sure there are other minor examples

So another seven years of getting stuck walking up stairs. I can't begin to state my excitement over the revelation.

I'll admit I'm a chronic jumper on WoW, however it is ridiculous to not have a way of jumping in this day and age. I have to admit, as annoying as it is to have people bouncing everywhere, it does add new strategic possibilities.

Jumping makes level design harder because you have to put more consideration into keeping people out of places they aren't supposed to go. If FFXI had jumping you still would have to go though the basement to get to the other side of Fei Yin. That wasn't just an accident of map design, they intended it to be like that. The only difference is that the there would be a 15 foot drop there instead of a 3 foot drop.

Adding jumping would not change a damn thing. The places that force you to take the long way around would still force you to take the long way around.

Honestly, not being able to jump doesn't bother me THAT much.
The comic is more mocking the fact that there's spots that are barely an inch or two tall, and your character can't cross them.
Like some of the stairs in Ordelle's Caves. If you could jump, even just a small hop, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. :D

For me the worst is that little room with the dipped inner circle in Horutoto past the 3 mage doors. Fall down there and I'll be pounding my face on the keyboard in the next few minutes.

Unfortunatly most people here won't get the Warhammer 40k referance.
