Now that the Dragonsong War is over let's talk about dragons for a minute.

At the top of the heap we have Midgardsormr. The father of all other dragons on Hydaelyn. Origins unknown.
Are there more like him somewhere? Presumably there must be. He and his children came from somewhere. Another planet or dimension maybe?

Next we have the First Brood. Midgardsormr's seven children who came with him to Hydaelyn from places unknown.
Bahamut (dead), Tiamat (imprisoned), Nidhogg (dead), Hraesvelgr (alive), Ratatoskr (dead). Two more currently unknown.
Will those two be important later? Are they even in Eorzea?

After that we have the children of the First Brood. Vidofnir, Vedrfolnir, etc. Where did THEY come from? Dragons have two genders so I imagine it requires one of each to breed. Did the First Brood breed with each other to produce that first generation?

Then finally there's everyone else. Presumably after that second generation there were enough dragons to breed and not be super weird.

Next, dragon types:
Wyverns, aevis, drake, amphiptere, etc. How does that work? When a dragon lays an egg is the result just random? Even among parents and siblings there doesn't seem to be consistency. Vidofnir and Vedrfolnir look nothing like each other, or Hraesvelgr. Hraesvelgr and Nidhogg look similar to each other but look nothing like Bahamut or Tiamat.

Man, now that I've actually thought about it and typed all this out, dragons are pretty weird.

I guess my questions are: Can anyone fill in any of those blanks? And, we know Midgardsormr still has two children out there that we haven't met yet. Do you think we'll meet them eventually (or at least learn their stories if they're dead?) Either in this expansion or a later one?

The top dog so to speak is Shinryu. While in-game it's only hinted at, Yoshida pretty much dropped the hint when he was asked about the Heavensward title artwork that Shinryu was going to be an 'epic aerial battle' of some kind.

In terms of dragon types, I think it's largely just SE's misstep when they have the story and gameplay elements, unlike XI where some story elements blended well with the gameplay and vice versa, XIV is really detached like the story and gameplay are two different things at the same time. Take for example Vishaap, there's no other dragon as big and imposing as him that we know of (except for Shinryu maybe since Bahamut is kind of KO'd) and there's literally very little story about him, despite having an epic "save ishgard" moment. I know we, as the "warrior of light" only just got introduced to Ishgard and the goings on, but something that big attacking or even being remotely close to attacking that nation would be known, talked about and seen, because Eorzea outside of Ishgard isn't exactly shielded from said dragons.

So until we have 3.4 and on and such to see if they introduce Dragon Beast Tribe or go more into it in the "lore book", I think it's largely just a disconnect, because baby dragons are seen everywhere, but none look like the elder dragons or sons/daughters meaning they either popped out fully grown or depending on the aether as they grow changes their form.

SE has a lot of backstory on the forums about the Dragon's Language, but very little about how they're actually all setup, because then you have dragons like the dread-dragon from XI (I guess they classify as Dahak still) which we can just figure to be voidsent more so than an actual dragon.

Another big reason I love XI is because they went to the trouble to clearly classify Monster Family and Sub-Species and how they interact (in the sense why a black mandragora is different from a white one and why Lycopodiums are different from regular mandragoras etc.)
