It has to reset at SOME point to be considered "the next day." Currently this happens at JP midnight. I don't see the problem with that. It's been the same time every day for several years now.
It's because with XI (and loosely DQX) it follows the ruleset of if you enter x content before reset/lockout (e.g before JP Midnight and it ticks over) you can do it again right after, especially in XI's early days, which is how people sped things up/double dipped basically to get stuff out the way in one sitting rather than waiting around or in the case of XIV, losing a day because you happened to be busy. It's why they shot down "rollover tomes" on the basis it gives you an 'advantage.'
So it's not like it's a foreign concept to SE, it just kinda shows there's some weird designs going on with XIV's backend, because they said when we queue for Duty, it copies our entire data and current inventory over to a new server, meaning timers should above all be frozen at that point in time.
