You pronounce Larvae as larvee? That's so weird. Smiley: lol

Aeons I'd pronounce as "ay-on" (a la FFX), but it's so uncommon to see that here. You just see eon.

No, it's an i sound at the end (or eye, if you prefer).

Hmmm, thinking about it, I think I can hear "larvi" in David Attenborough's voice in my mind. Smiley: lol

Apparently, Square-Enix voice actors disagree, because everybody in FFX says "Ay-on" in the standard NA English version.

EDIT: Quoted the wrong post. Was obviously talking about "Aeon".

I personally wouldn't trust a bunch of mail room interns.

Several things.

  • "ay" is meaningless as an example. For instance: is it pronounced as in "kayak" or as in "payment"
  • in Classical Latin the "ae" dipthong ('correctly' written as æ) is always pronounced as in the English word "eye";
  • Many biologists and doctors and so on (at least in the US) incorrectly pronounce æ as in "payment" to the point people think this is right. Probably this came from the Catholic Church and others' teachings of Latin pronunciation as if it were Italian.

  • I cannot fathom why one would begin to pronounce Draenor as the man in the video who rhymed it with "bran, or...". Hopefully this will not foreshadow the content.

No, you called me an "ignorant" colonial, because hey, why not bring Ad Hominem attacks into this too? And last I checked, WoW is a game produced by a US company, so God Forbid someone living in the US (and not Austrailia/Britain/other places where English is spoken) disagree with the way they chose to have it pronounced/spelled?

    lol.

    ok.

    sure.

Well, at least you presented some actual concise information without Ad Hominem attacks, so hey, that's awesome.

So, from what you say, Draenor should be "Dr-eye-nor" and not "Dran-or".

I'm wondering, though, are you sure all English words containing "ae" are copying the Latin "æ"? Maybe they're two different things? Who knows.

All I know is that "Dran-or" just doesn't sound right. But I'm sure that goes right along with their "DRAN-eye" that came from there. In fact, IIRC, the opening cutscene calls them "Drawn-eye".

EDIT: Okay, it isn't the cutscene, meh. I know I heard that somewhere in-game but now I cannot remember where. Thought it was the intro, but it isn't. He says "Dran-eye".

Relax, guys. English isn't written in IPA or KK, and although there are quite a few places that speak something they consider English, there is no single standardized version to refer to. I have to remind my students of these points several times a year.

We can't even agree on what to call that tomato based product that McDonald's hands out with their fries, or how to spell it, or how to say it. Why would a name from a fictional group of aliens that sound like drunken Russians be any more standardized?

...and why would you expect it to be pronounced like an English word, or follow any (if there are any) English rules about pronunciation?

Usually, assuming a word in a foreign language is pronounced according to English phonetics results in a mispronounced word...or, it just gets assimilated with the wrong pronunciation, lol.

I didn't see THAT much difference between the two. The first is slightly deeper, but the audio itself a bit less-quality. The second does hard-pronounce some syllables, sure, but I didn't see that much wrong with it. *shrugs*

I guess I'm... just not really... someone who really cares about it that much. I'm indifferent.

Maybe I've just sat through too many bad drama practices to have any sort of tolerance for it now. Smiley: lol

I totally can relate to you on this Digg. I like the quality of the second voice track better, but her acting is definitely a bit overdone.

The second one is giving me a case of "Hey, it's that voice!", but I can't be sure where. Was she Kerrigan or something?

No, she was Catwoman in the DC vs.... something game.

That's literally her only other acting credit.

I called you ignorant in response to you ignorantly 'correcting' my spelling and pronunciation of a word. You're also ignorant of the ad hominem fallacy, and a million other things besides. Relax about it, that's my advice.
