I remember a while back Blizzard had a template for the mage class that they should be the undisputed rulers of AoE damage. Ok... a while back means The Burning Crusade. Have they come out and said that this is no longer the role they want mages to play?

That's ok, around here they are doubling our mind sear damage.
Why do priests not get any AoE damage? I have always wondered that. We have to wait until 62, and that AoE is terrible.

With the doubling of Mind Sear damage in patch 4.1, we will hopefully do some respectable AoE.
Holy Nova heals at the same time as it does damage, and doesn't generate threat. It is situational, rather than a normal part of our rotation.
Blizzard would probably think we were overpowered, if we were top of the dps chart and healing at the same time.
It was their goal come cata to make AoEing a thing of the past. They have completely reneged on this descision and are caving in. AoE damage across the board will be boosted to 3-4 times it's original power (Mind Sear has already been boosted and is therefor only getting a 100% boost now.)
They wanted to make mindless AoEing not worth it to the party, especially in heroics. The thing they forgot to do was give players the option/ability to make that call based on their damage out put, tank's survivability, and healer's throughput. Sure, certain fights really do need the CC, but why go through the motions - and lets face it, dangers - of CCing every dang pull if it's not necessary. I fear that now, they have gone too far in the other direction. Also, Fire Mages (the only pure DPS class able to pull respectable AoE damage) will now be pretty far down the rung on AoE, and Arcane will be ****-poor. Frost may very well be the best AoE damage spec now, especially if correctly specced.
Who knows what they'll do or why they'll do it anymore...
