Warrior v. rogue?Follow

Need to start spending some time with a alt, but I'm torn. I have an existing L22 BE Rogue. but the idea of going through all the same quests I recently did with a hunter leave me definitely UNexcited.

Thinking of just starting over with an orc warrior, a class and race I've never played before. My reasons are that I REALLY need to get battleground practice. I'm thinking of leveling this one through HEAVY dungeon/BG work and much less questing. Also, I'm told that when going for Pickup groups, tanks and healers don't have t spend nearly as much time waiting as do DPS type.

Assuming my goal is flat-out tanking, how should I be developing my character. E.g. two-handed weapon vs. shield, what attributes besides strength, and would there be a best selection of professions?

Warrior tanking is prot spec with a 1-handed weapon and a shield. Dodge and parry (and later mastery) are the main defensive secondary stats. Professions are whatever you want.

At lower levels though, prot spec and even a shield aren't really necessary. Stuff in lower level dungeons dies so fast that you hardly need a tank at all. Just taunt anything that goes after a caster.

Protection is awesome for leveling. You get a lot of defensive abilities and you still rock nice DPS all the way up to end-game Cataclysm.

Pick up a two-handed whatever and go do quests until you hit level 10. Get a shield and a one-handed weapon. You get an ability called Shield Slam at level 10 when you choose Protection. This is your new best friend. It hits like a truck AND it dispels a magic effect.

With your first two talent points (level 10 and 11) you should pick up Blood and Thunder. This really boosts your AOE damage to ridiculous levels. After that, start fleshing out the Protection talent tree with talents you think will increase your DPS and survivability. At level 29 you'll be able to get Warbringer, which makes Charge usable in combat. That's when the fun begins. Being able to charge while in combat gives you a lot of mobility, which is downright sexy in PvP.

As for stats, go with gear that has strength and stamina on it. Once gear with secondary stats pop up, begin stacking hit rating, crit rating and expertise rating. You don't need mastery rating until level 80 at the earliest. You may want to get some gear with dodge and parry on it once you hit Northrend as the jump in damage taken between Outland and Northrend is huge.

Protection Warrior is one of my favorite classes simply because it's so much fun, both in PvE and PvP. Battlegrounds feel like playgrounds with all the tricks you get. Once you hit level 85, you'll have four charge abilities available.

It's hilarious when you use these four abilities a lot. And while you can't dish out a whole lot of damage in PvP now (due to lack of Vengeance), you can sure as hell take a beating while being a royal pain in the ***. I went into a Battleground at level 85 in my PvE gear (had no PvP gear, not even a trinket) and it was a blast. I died a lot, but I could hold off four PvP geared players for 30+ seconds, which gave my team mates some valuable time to cap flags, or resurrect and come to my rescue.

And don't underestimate Shield Slam. That thing hurts. I got in quite a few kills because of it.

This. It's what I've done with my warrior thus far and it has probably been my smoothest leveling character.

Not to mention, using Victory Rush as a quick heal is great when fighting mobs.

I just want to put it out there to clarify even though Maz and Karlina mentioned it, when you start getting up in the higher levels (80s), mastery will start becoming your primary stat. Hit and expertise becomes less important than they used to. Pretty much it's a balance of Dodge, Parry and your mastery/block when you get up there.

I've leveled prot all the way up, and I really do enjoy it. So everything they mentioned above is the best advice available for the low levels =)

Thanks for all the advice. I'm still part-timing him after I finish the dailies on my main, but I'm about to hit 1 so I can start playing in the dungeons. What's the lower limit on BGs? Seems to me I tried to get in with my very first alt and was told to go home to my mommy until I grew up. When I did get in, I was so bad at it I quit trying.

Looking forward to it with this guy (some people never learn).

I believe you can enter the first Battleground(s) at level 10, but you'll generally not want to go in there until you come closer to the end of a level bracket (they changed it so that every bracket consists of five levels now, right?). This is due to the massive stat difference between a level 10 and a level 15 character. Especially if you're up against people with heirloom items.

That said, I believe I had some great fun in PvP on my Protection Warrior. You can take a beating, which enables you to survive most of the stuff others can't. You won't get one-shot by Rogues and the likes, but you might not be able to kill them either.

Low level PvP is pretty meh. So is high level PvP, but low level PvP is more meh.

Yeah low level battlegrounds are pretty much a reward for people who have taken the time to get a lot of heirlooms. Warrior will likely have a hard time of it early on, as you'll get nuked pretty bad by twinked casters/hunters.

Once you get to the higher levels though, you'll be plenty dangerous. Warriors aren't the greatest PvP class at the moment, but you'll still mow anyone down if they're foolhardy enough to try and stand toe-to-toe with you.
