As an experiment we installed Windows 8 on a ten year old Dell. It ran. It was still Windows 8, unfortunately.
Windows 7 is better unless you're on a touch tablet.

I just upgraded my laptop to the 8 while the price was reduced (for those who had purchased their laptop during a threshold of time in the past year). I didn't much care for it at first but I've gotten very good with it and now I highly enjoy it.
