I joined a gym last week and went for the first time this morning. I am convinced the Elliptical machine was made by Satan himself. I did 20min on it, 15min on the bike, and did a 5min Ab workout. I feel like I'm gonna die and everything is Jello, and seriously questioning why I am doing this. Hanging on my closet door is the cutest tankini in a reasonable size for my height and build, I'm going to get into it by summer if it kills me. I have fought my weight since my early 20's and with the big 3-0 fast approaching, I need to get a handle on it now or I'm never going to. This is also one of my resolutions made at New Year's that I'm kinda getting a late start on, but better late than never!

What are your goals for summer? How are the resolutions coming along, if you made any? And any other self-congratulatory moments lately? Pats on the back all around!

That's how you should feel after a workout.

My goal is maintenance and not letting my age affect me. A big part of my job is to be in shape, and I can't expect people that work under me to be in shape if I can't do it.

My goal for summer is to get our neighbor to start picking up the dog **** before it really starts to stink in the heat.

As for fitness I took the amount of money I'd spend on 1 month in a gym and bought a set of dumbbells a while back. Between those and running outside I'm pretty much set. Though I need to get back into the running thing more, it's been a while. Lacking a good pair of running shorts these days, and I'll need some as it gets warmer.

I moved my consoles and a screen to where my exercise bike is, so if I want to play I have to be sitting on the bike. So, I've effectively curbed my console gaming habit. Smiley: lol

I don't have a specific weight loss goal. I mostly just want to adjust my unhealthy lifestyle into a more healthy one. If I have to go anywhere within a reasonable distance, I'll walk. I'm eating less garbage. I'm down two pants sizes since the beginning of the year, which is cool. I'd bike to work but I can't find any gyms close enough that I'd be able to go take a shower before clocking in, so I'm going to pass on that for now.

To grow carrots.

I usually go to the gym a few times a week, but I fractured my pinkie toe on Saturday (trying to break up a cat fight) and that means the elliptical is right out for six weeks.

I confirmed that the exercise bike is okay as a stopgap, but I can't get my heart rate up as much on that thing since my tush is sitting while I pedal. Smiley: frown

For some reason I always end up with short turnip looking carrots. There are literally no rocks in the area I am growing them in for 4 feet in any direction, it's got it's own watering system, I fertilize them, and everything else grows great. But not the carrots. No idea why.

For carrots it's the dirt, they need sandy soil.

Grats on your exercising, Jello = good but the first little while it'll be much worse. It gets easier once you've been at it consistently for a bit, mostly I think you just learn how to do things with a complete lack of strength so you don't notice it as much :).

30, eh? O.K., from someone with a daughter nearly as old as you, if I could stick one thought in your head that you would not be able to get rid of, a thought that would haunt you for the rest of time, it would be this (you said it yourself, I'm just confirming it from experience):

Kudos to you for starting. Like gaxe said, it's supposed to hurt. Just keep it up.

I tried the whole exercising thing, but it's much easier to just... not do the whole exercising thing.

The thought of going to the gym after work is unbearable, and I don't know how people do it.

The dirt it's in is a 1/3 sand 1/3 potting soil 1/6 manure 1/6 peat moss + assorted water retention additives mixture. Do they need more sand than that?

Would you describe your local soil (before additional stuff) as "clay"? If so, moar sand.

Carrots like well drained soil. This promotes growth and prevents rot or drowning. Over-wet soil discourages carrot depth.
EDIT: Raised beds are best

On a related note, carrots seeded in close proximity will give you square carrots!!

ALSO: What kind of carrot seeds are you planting? Brand and name of strain, I mean.

The gym would be so much better if people would just rack their goddamn weights after they're done using them. Smiley: mad

What if I told you that your gym hired someone to go around un-racking the weights in an effort to get its members to stretch more?

Smiley: nod

But that requires getting up earlier than strictly necessary!

My carrots were like this too! Short, squat, bitter little things. Before planting each season, I would till the ground under several times with a good fertilizing soil. This north Texas dirt is very dense and clay-like so I would constantly have to keep the soil cultivated which is very hard to do when something is planted there!

I would have to get up at 4 AM, which would leave me a zombie the rest of the day. Due to work, that is not an option.

The workout wouldn't wreck me - getting up at 4 AM would.
