Yeah, I know there's a separate forum for this **** but let's be real it's probably haunted at this point.

Okay, so my problem is that my speakers/headphones will always play sound at half the system volume. By that I mean that the green bar indicating speaker volume will always be half of the volume that whatever in the mixer the sound is attributable to is showing. So, say I have Firefox at 90%, the speakers will display and play at 45%.

Illustrative picture

This problem developed some time after I started using two headsets, but uninstalling the second headset's drivers etc didn't seem to solve the problem. A temporary fix I have found is to go to playback devices and change the device that's set as either default device or default communications device. This makes whatever speakers are assigned as default play at full master volume for a while. E.G. it'll be maxed out for a song, then change back to playing at half volume when my media player switches to another track.

Anyone know how to fix this? I've done a few searches, the best I've found is a suggestion my ram is ******* but I didn't like that answer very much and I'm rather skeptical about it.

Are you sure? It works for me on other computers, too, even through a proxy.

Maybe I've just become old, and like all old people **** just breaks around me all the time for reasons I can't fathom.

You should warn people about how terrible of an image you use as a desktop background before they click on that.

Some kind of trigger warning, you mean?

I think if you and Poldaran ever touch you'll mutually annihilate one another.

I'd blame anything resembling TeamSpeak and Ventrillo... probably conflicting with headset drivers... Failing RAM can cause some bizarre issues though...

Have you tried turning it on and off again?

When you installed the second headphones (or whatever), it probably installed a mixer in there somewhere. I vaguely recall having the same issue at some point in the past. Basically, some software installed a mixer tool which conveniently sat itself right in between the OS mixer and the sound applications being run. You'll have to search around for anything that looks like it's a sound related tool. Maybe check for running processes, click on stuff on the toolbar, etc. But somewhere, there's a mixer app that's setting your sound to 50%. Trick when this happens is finding it.

Okay, I did a load of stuff and none of it worked, but then I restarted and it did. I'm just not sure which of the fifty different things I did actually fixed it.

So, uh, thanks y'all.

After about three hours of tinkering, yeah.

For reference, I've had this problem for about six months, but been too lazy to fix it until now.
