Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) wrote:
But we conservatives mocked Barack Obama’s failure to deliver on his pledge to change the tone in Washington even as we worked to assist with that failure. It was we conservatives who, upon Obama’s election, stated that our No. 1 priority was not advancing a conservative policy agenda but making Obama a one-term president—the corollary to this binary thinking being that his failure would be our success and the fortunes of the citizenry would presumably be sorted out in the meantime.
[...]
To carry on in the spring of 2017 as if what was happening was anything approaching normalcy required a determined suspension of critical faculties. And tremendous powers of denial.
[...]
If by 2017 the conservative bargain was to go along for the very bumpy ride because with congressional hegemony and the White House we had the numbers to achieve some long-held policy goals—even as we put at risk our institutions and our values—then it was a very real question whether any such policy victories wouldn’t be Pyrrhic ones. If this was our Faustian bargain, then it was not worth it. If ultimately our principles were so malleable as to no longer be principles, then what was the point of political victories in the first place?
[...]
Even as our own government was documenting a conÂcerted attack against our democratic processes by an enemy foreign power, our own White House was rejecting the authority of its own intelligence agencies, disclaiming their findings as a Democratic ruse and a hoax. Conduct that would have had conservatives up in arms had it been exhibited by our political opponents now had us dumbstruck.
[...]
We have taken our “institutions conducive to freedom,” as Goldwater put it, for granted as we have engaged in one of the more reckless periods of politics in our history. In 2017, we seem to have lost our appreciation for just how hard won and vulnerable those institutions are.

Why is it taking these half-wits hindsight to recognize what most people realized the second the obstructionist politics began? Rhetorical question, I know I answered it.

For the Mooch.

If Senator Flake (and that is such an appropriate name for a man who is, by all accounts, not exceptionally bright) were sincere, perhaps he would not have voted for Trump's agenda 95% of the time.

If this is a new epiphany he's had, well, all I can say is that it took him long enough.

He's a conservative and so he's going to vote with the conservative establishment most of the time. He seems more dismayed about the process in general than the votes.

On the other hand, he also said that they shouldn't pass a healthcare bill that was created in a rush in secret... and then voted for the "skinny repeal" bill so don't mistake me for really defending the guy.

The hits keep on coming for The Mooch. When he sold his company, he planned to take advantage of a provision in the tax code that allowed him to avoid paying taxes as a new federal employee divesting himself of conflicts of interest. But now he's not a federal employee and will owe millions of dollars in taxes from the sale.

Ten days. I know because it made headline news here, for some ******* reason. I'm also now acquainted with his appearance, which reminded me strongly of Agent Smith.

At least I didn't bother to remember his name. I'm up a few seconds and a couple of neurons on this deal.

Hopefully someone told HR or it's going to be an awkward morning for the person planning his orientation tour.

It's a special skill, getting fired two weeks before your official first day. It's not a particularly useful skill, but it is special.

I notice General Kelly is being very circumspect, at least in public, at least until he gets his first paycheck.

Partially-related: Sarah Huckabee Sanders seems to be a hit with the pro-Trump crowd. We'll see how long it is before she flames out, but he's roused the base at least.

Shouldn't he still get that provision? I mean he did divest in anticipation of removing conflicts of interest. We want members of gov't to do this more not less, right?

We'd also like them to stick around for more than negative two weeks.

I'm not the IRS so don't ask me. From Lolgaxe's description it sounds as though he was never actually a federal employee so that may be the issue versus someone who was fired from a job they actually held for ten days.

In other news, a bipartisan bill is brewing in the Senate that would make it much more difficult for Trump to fire Mueller. Basically, if Mueller was fired, it would go to a three judge panel to decide if it was warranted or not.

And back to Scaramucci one last time, he's going to hold an online event tomorrow in case you're so incredibly bored that you care to hear some guy talk about why he got preemptively fired for being a dick.

He's doing it with some former Fox News guy because The Mooch is too good for a Reddit AMA.

Is he going to tell us that he wasn't really fired but decided to sign on to the Miami Heat instead of staying with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers?

Lebron James, ESPN's "The Decision." Yes, I know: If you have to explain a joke then it isn't very good yadda yadda.

Trying to dictate what Nieto, another World Leader, can and cannot say to the rest of the world about his own campaign promises about who would be paying for his see-through aesthetically pleasing solar energy generating wall probably won't do wonders for his polling numbers.

I dunno, more or less the stuff seems to be pretty meh to me. A lot of it we've heard before from people reporting what he said. He's not any better with words in private, so lots of blunt, awkward, or crudely worded comments. At least that's what seems to be making headlines. Who knows what sticks though, and anyone left supporting him at this point isn't going to stop doing so because of something he said. They'll just jump on his bandwagon even harder. Smiley: rolleyes

Smiley: twocents

But his investigation was a huge dud and turned up nothing!

He also added another criminal prosecutor to his team the other day.
