New Comic

I imagine Durkon's entrance was like this in the comic.

I find it both comforting and disturbing that the sending spell is smart enough to know that "if'n" should count as just one word.

New comic up!

Looks like the book will be ending soon. Getting close to having the group securely together and heading for the final gate. Good time to wrap it up.

Considering how much time was spent on this gate (not even counting injury time out), I'm not sure how soon "soon" is. I wouldn't necessarily assume it's going to be that straightforward. I suppose it depends on what he actually wants to do with the whole "world in the rift" thing.

I've also noticed that the output has dropped down to just one comic a week for the last several weeks. For a while there, we were getting two a week (and occasionally even three). Not sure what to read into that, if anything though. Could just be that the holiday season is busy, so less comics. Or could be "we're getting near the end, so pace them out a bit". Dunno.

Cat Fight! Cat Fight! I mean Caster Fight!

Also watch Tarquin cut Julia's rope and he falls to his death.

The Star Wars reference was cute.

I just chalk the slow down to the holidays.

Tarquin's out of weapons (Roy got his sword back, lost his whip to V and just lost his dagger). Doesn't preclude him from getting another one I guess but he's lost what he has.

That's one cheaply made +3 rapier to get snapped like that. Julio gonna bite it so he can leave a sword to Elan? Or, you know, he could stay alive and give him one like he did last time.

Laurin has to be about out of points by now between all the portals, the disintegrates, the dimension door, dispelling Durkon's Protection from Sunlight, levitating the whip, etc. Plus she lost a couple levels from Durkon's attack. I assume V is scraping the barrel of the caster barrel as well after the assists with the army fight. Be more of a caster slap fight than a caster spell/psionic fight.

Halley's Short Sword/Long Dagger is just lying on the deck of the ship right now.

Well, it's lying at the same spot where his dagger should be (assuming he dropped it when he got smacked by Bigsby's [X] Fist/Hand)

[Edit: Indeed he did. Shows it getting thrown a bit but neither weapon is in the over-the-shoulder view of V facing Tarquin/Laurin in the usual Chekov's Weapon manner]

Based on the positioning in the earlier panels both weapons should be off screen between the top of Haley's head and the Raven who's name I currently forget.

Sometimes, it can be amazing just how much a low level spell can do. I'm suspecting it's more likely to be a case of clever use of game mechanics than a sadder repeat of the cleric fight several hundred comics ago, assuming V truly learned the lesson from the fight with Xykon a ways back.

Caster Fight! Caster Fight!

I went through the strips starting from their departure for Windy Canyon and V actually cast a lot more spells than I assumed prior to this fight:

From #836 (when they set off for Windy Canyon) onward:
(836) Fly (x4) on V, Belkar, Durkon & (whatever the dominated kobold was named)
(837) Fly on V (presumably the same casting)
(839) Greater Dispel Magic
(857) Passwall, Expeditious Retreat (Quickened)
(896) Bigby's [Hand]
(919) Stoneskin, Fireball, Wall of Fire, Protection From Arrows (V doesn't explicitly cast Fly so I assume he's still under the one from 836)
(920) Lightning Bolt
(921) Fly, Chain Lightning
(923) Magic Missile, Lightning Bolt
(925) Hold Monster
(927) Prismatic Spray
(928) Disintegrate
(932) Bigby's [Hand] (assuming it's the same hand handing Roy the sword as the one carrying him to ship)
(934) (I'm assuming this is the same Hand as 932 since it's minutes later)

Someone elsewhere pointed out that the Fly from 836 might have been a Mass Fly which would use fewer spells but take away a potential big boom spell.

I've no idea how many slots V has, but I wonder if the "25 spells remaining" was more bluff than truth. And I assume not all of those spells had practical combat applications. Still, Laurin apparently was indeed running low on psionic points

Probably at least some bluff. V should be around 13th level (she/it used prismatic spray, which is a 7th level spell). That means V has somewhere around 26 base spells, plus maybe another 4 or 5 bonus spells. V also gained a ring of wizardry along the way, which doubles one spell levels worth of spells (so call that another 4). Still, barring having multiple rings of wizardry or some other means of enhancing her spell totals, she shouldn't be much above maybe mid 30s in terms of total spells per day. Given how many she had cast up to that point, she maybe had a handful left. How many of those were combat useful? Who knows?

V may also either be higher level than some have suggested *or* she/he/it has some other magic item/ability that grants additional higher level spells. For example, in just the fight against Tarquin and his buddies, V has used 3 7th level spells (that I'm sure of): Prismatic Spray, Force Cage, and Grasping Hand. Unless V has a ridiculously high int score (which I'm assuming is not the case), this would normally require being 16th level. So something is granting V additional high level spells.

I don't know, Haley's skills met the ending requirement for me.

Darn. I was kinda hoping that they would confirm that it was an orange prism ioun stone that V's familiar stole. But that was a pretty entertaining ending for Tarquin.

I think that was just about the only way it could have ended. Anticlimactic, and pretty perfect because of it.

I'm pretty sure the Giant said that it's not THE end of the book, but near it.

Just to rub it in Tarquin's face even more.

That's just as well, you've been arguing with gbaji - not solidly, obviously, more of a hundred years' war style affair - for as long as most of the posters there have been alive.
