Greetings all, I'm newFollow

Yes, you have one more player to your repertoire!

I used to play WoW and yes, that was fun but I've always loved Final Fantasy. Although I have only played 2 of them (VIII and IX) and now XI makes three. It has been so long since I've played anything remotely Final Fantasy I started looking up walkthrough/gameplay movies of VIII and IX! Ah, such fond memories ^_^

Now, back to the present!

I chose Ragnarok simply because I like the name. I am new, and I am Scialen (Hume Red Mage, and at the time of writing level 6 so I think I'm doing ok). If you are willing to give me any help, or even just enable us to be friends on FFXI (I need to work that bit out though), it will be a great help.

I have a couple of queries if that is okay.

Firstly, when switching jobs is that as easy as switching say equipment? Can you switch back and forth with no losses? If that is true, does that mean I can actually play EVERYTHING?! (in context of jobs)

It is a little daunting at first as there is no kind hand to lead you through the game. I understand that is part of the open endedness of it but is there a story? I have looked around this site and FFXIncyclopedia and to my reckoning the Missions are the story. I have completed the first Bastok one.

Money is also something (even in real life lol) I've never got the hang of. Economics just goes over my head and so far from taking a lesson from WoW, I collected crystals and sold them in their stacks (12 I believe...) and I have made 1000 Gil! Ah, I'm so happy about that. Yet because I want to get better armour etc. (my spells are not coming cheap as well :P ), what other methods are there for money gaining?

Thank you all for reading! I hope to see you all on Ragnarok!

No. Just Kidding.

Yes, you can play everything, AFTER you do certain quests to unlock the 14 other jobs you don't start off with.

The Nation Missions and the the expansion missions (RoZ, CoP, ToAU, WoTG) are the "main" story. The "main" story is further fleshed out through the various quests available. 90% of these quests provide little to no benefit to your character other than back story, if that's ok with you.

That's basically the jist of making gil when you start out. Sell EVERYTHING you get from mobs on the Auction House, and try to sell in stacks. Keep the Beastmen Seal items you get. You can use those to do special fights later on that have chance to drop valuable items. Also, when you have a substantial gil income, you can try your hand at crafting, but you won't see "BIG NUMBERS!!!" profit until after you devote millions of gil into leveling a craft.

Welcome to Ragnarok!

If you find you are in need of a Linkshell (or, using WoW terminology, Guild), feel free to join up for some shenanigans and hijinks at Moghat (Moghat Website & Forums).

Some excellent advice above! Let me just add a couple of tips for "places to look things up." Most every player uses the first one from time to time, or a similar site.

1. A wiki for FFXI -- one of many, but I use this one -- is http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Main_Page ... This, or a similar database, is indispensible for looking up basic information. (Like WowWiki or Thottbot for WOW?) Check the Starters Guide (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Starters_Guide) for a specific entry devoted to new players.

2. Square Enix itself has a new players' guide, but I can't vouch for it. Check it out at http://www.playonline.com/ff11newplayer/index.html?lang=en

If you get stuck, try to find me online, and I'll do my best to help. (I'm "Grommet.") You may need to remind me how you heard about me!

Hello! I am new to Ragnarok (and FF XI in general) as well and I have seemed to be keeping busy with the starter tasks the gate keeper Tarutaru has given me in Windurst. I look foward to meeting new people and hopfully getting into a LS that would fit me well... plus I could use the interaction and help!

To the OP: Look me up in game and add me to friends if you want someone new as well to quest around with sometime. My name is Booch in game. I am a lvl 4 warrior as of this post, but I am getting the hang of things. Good Luck!
