Warning Regarding PlayOnline ID and Password Frauds

From SE: It has come to our attention that some individuals are contacting FINAL FANTASY XI players in-game and referring them to fake websites resembling the official PlayOnline.com (http://www.playonline.com/) site. These sites ask the player to enter their PlayOnline ID and password at the fake website, with the intent of stealing items belonging to the player's character or characters. We have permanently removed the PlayOnline membership of these players who are responsible for hosting such websites to the attention of the proper authorities, requested further investigation on this issue with the help of the public organization, and have also shut down these sites to protect the FINAL FANTASY XI community. Please do not become a victim of "phishing." DO NOT disclose your PlayOnline ID or password to anyone other than the official PlayOnline.com (http://www.playonline.com/) website. *The only exception is when dealing directly with a PlayOnline Information Center representative via the PlayOnline Service & Support Web Chat system. You may be asked for your PlayOnline ID or registration code in such cases. Also note that no Square Enix representative (Game Master (GM) staff included) will ever ask you to provide your ID or Password from within a game or via e-mail. If you have experienced such issues, please contact our Information Center or the Game Masters (GM) for further consultations. Keep your data safe! Keep your PlayOnline ID and Password secure! PlayOnline Information Center Telephone: (858) 790 7529 Monday to Friday 9:00 - 18:00 (PST)

Veiledxmessiah, you think ppl don't make mistakes. I'm sorry Gargy didn't fit your standards in checking every website that says offical and looks the same as the offical website for https: . Also, the site did reload the live camera and all the links worked... If you did a search for playonline before the site was down it would have popped up as offical website of FF11...
LOL and you said

Belive it or not...I had this happen to me. If you would like to ck out what the website looked like before it was taken down. Ck my Linkshells website www.the-harbingers.com under gallery. Now tell me that isn't a perfect example of a phishing website.... I was going to see who was online by the Friends list plus bar.... Everything was stolen gil, gear, and AF'S dropped. To top it off they deleted my accounts. He wasn't very smart about it b/c My linkshell found all his info within 10min. I reported him to everyone you can think of. He is being charged with alot of stuff. I Can't disclose anymore info in this matter. Lets just say I hope he has soap on a rope.:)
IDN spoofing
# Feb 08 2005 at 4:32 PM Rating: Excellent
I should mention this:

The spoofing of URLs is now no longer an IE thing. In fact, when it comes to IDN (International Domain Name - a quite recent standard that incorporates the use of other character sets in domain names), IE is the one browser immune to it. You can also disable IDN from Firefox - so evidently, I would advise people to use Firefox (available at http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox)

To see how it works, look at this:
http://www.shmoo.com/idn/

I believe it's because of this that SE is pressing the privacy issue. IE is not to blame because it actually hasn't implemented the IDN standards yet (go figure - it's immune because it's backwards..)

And finally, here's a link how to disable IDN with Firefox: link

Unfortunately, what SquareEnix doesn't tell you is that seeing the address 'www.playonline.com' in your address bar does not insure you are at thier official site.

Internet Explorer has a bug that allows phishers to spoof an address in the URL bar of IE. A casual web browser would never suspect he's been phished, because verything - even the URL - would appear legit.

Please make sure your IE is updated by using Windows Update or checking out this security patch: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-014.mspx

Or even better, just use Firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/

And that is why Internet Explorer sucks. A while back, my IE got so hacked that I can't open popup windows that are required for the website to work. Worse yet, the annoying popups that advertise would all show up...but they'd show up blank and would never load.

Someone gave me a link to Firefox a long time ago on the IGN forums and I couldn't have thanked them more. Firefox is the best web browser I've ever used. Rate up for posting the link for other people to use^^.

I agree wholeheartedly with mcbizzle. Kids, people kind of new to the internet, etc. might not have the experience to see a scam like this for what it is.

Have a little compassion. Direct your aggression towards the scammers where it belongs.

While I'm the first to agree that there are plenty of "not too clever" people out there, let's also remember that there are some pretty young kids playing FFXI too. And we all know that you can use poor judgement when you're young. ^^

So before you (no sympathy people) line everyone up to get onto the short bus, consider the kids out there that've been leveling for a while and saving for some very nice gear which now has all been lost... how would you feel.... nice...

Thank you for pointing that out, mcbizzle. I was being pretty judgmental too before i read that. Still, most people should have learned by now not to give out sensitive information like that unless they are absolutely positive they are at the right website. Anyways, lesson learned. Better to learn the hard way here than somewhere where it really matters, like eBay for instance.
#REDACTED, Posted: Feb 08 2005 at 11:04 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I have no sympathy for people who are dumb enough to fall for this scam. I haven't heard of it happening to anyone I know or anyone at all for that fact.

Believe it or not there are still people in this world that are capable of trust and compassion. Sadly people with negative attitudes take advantage of them. Alot of people are still willing to take things at face value. I have alot of sympathy for people who are the victims of scams. Is innocence such a bad thing in this world that people are quick to jump on them?

Does anyone else have a problem with this "sentence?" It seems that they're saying that they "Banned the players to the proper authorites" and got help from some public organization. I realise this was originally written in Japanese and then translated, but it didn't quite make it into English. If I'm missing something, I'm up for some enlightenment.

Basically this means their accounts were terminated, they got the web hosting companies to yank the sites, and referred the cases to local law enforcement for criminal action.
Relieved.
# Feb 08 2005 at 6:44 AM Rating: Decent
I'm relieved people are getting slashed for it. I hope they're prevented from returning.

I suppose our only defense against gil sellers is to reveal their identities when discovered to as many people as possible, so people can "shut them out"....
still a shame
# Feb 08 2005 at 6:40 AM Rating: Decent
that they do nothing about gil sellers which has really in some ways deminished FF.
RE: still a shame
# Feb 10 2005 at 2:18 PM Rating: Decent
Sadly, this fake economy that the gilsellers have made is hurting all of us. SE should do something about this because with all the upcoming new and cool-looking MMO's, they can't afford to lose us.

It's not encouraging when a major problem arises, and no one does anything about it. However, it makes me happy to see S-E moving so quickly to address this issue.

I /salute them. ^^
