E3: A Look at Wings of the Goddess

Wings of the Goddess Logo

Concept Art Banner

There was once a war that shook the very foundations of Vana'diel.

It was a dark and dreadful age.

The lives of many were lost.

The futures of many were destroyed.

The joys of many were extinguished.

However, there are those from that age who remember...

They remember the hope that burned in the darkness.

The companions that banded together.

The heroes that strove onwards.

The rivals that joined forces.

And now history is reborn, as we return to that age of strife...

Um has anyone stoped to think that the knight on the choco is mearly an NPC connected to the story-line? i hear all this talk of "ohh a new job!" and some of "Chocobo combat just isnt posible." frist of all, it is possible. the "charging" attacks could be a weapon skill. and for the majority he will stand there fighting the mob like everyone else. i kinda contridicted my point but i proposed two valid ones. well see tho. who knows i could be wrong....at the same time....who cares?

hmmm...Chocobo combat...Maybe it could be exclusively spear/lance, and be kind of like jousting - you don't stop to hit the enemy, you just charge them. Maybe it could have a stamina bar like in fishing, where you lower your polearm, plow through a couple of enemies, then lift your spear and wait for your stamina to refill. Just a thought

Also..is anyone else curious as to why that yagudo has horns? o_o

If you read the caption on the The Yagudo Theomilitary, it says that they come from the Far East. @.@

First thought when I saw that picture was : Final Fantasy Tactics.

When I read the caption, I thought: Harry Potter. Then I thought: I wonder if going in the past will de-age us. How weird would it be to see a Mochi-version of yourself, wearing a scorpion harness and wielding a 2HD sword.

Looking at the title picture, in front of Jeuno... it just looks like a long line of Arch Angels to me.

I'm most excited to see a pre-ruin Sauromugue, tbh. :)

Yes Mounted combat would be dificult for the reasons you mentioned, but it would be possible to create one new job with one set of animations calling it a "Choco Knight".
A Choco Knight could be considered the new "tank" everyone wants. While on your choco, you would have increased defensive stats, and the dmg you take would be inflicted to the choco, once the choco is low health you can jump off your choco, or at any time. But if you let your choco die then you have to wait for your 2hr to call him again. If you just jump off the choco you would be able to call him back whenever. after an alotted amount of time it's health would be restored, but if you just jump off and then call him back he would still be at the same HP. Now while not on your mount you would still be able to tank but not aswell as a pld or nin, but still better then say a war or mnk. I knew weapon would have to be created, maybe a smaller polearm that could be handled with one hand so you can hold a shield in the other. Creating one new character that is allowed to ride a choco wouldn't be that hard and it would satidfy then need of a new tank and let ppl ride a choc in to combat.

No... Just no. If you can't see the flaws in that job idea already it's not worth trying to point them out.

I admit I would enjoy mounted combat if it was done correctly... but just no.

WHEN has FFXI ever had combat that resembles this? FFXI combat, as much as I like it, is so far out if you stop and think about it. In real combat you'd have a 1:1 maybe 1:2 ratio on enemies it would be extremely awkward to fight someone while 5+ other people are also fighting them. So, amplify that awkwardness by adding that player to a mount, then realize the difficulty of creating an entirely new set of combat animations for mounted combat, and the difficulty of making it look like that THF on that chocobo is actually hitting that rarab with his knife from his mount. Just because it didn't work with dragoon doesn't mean it will never work.
If you give the knight the option to drop of the choco, in order to heal itself for a few battles and then jump back, and in the meantime the knight would still be able to reasonable tank. Then the 2hr is used in the cases when things go wrong.

Won't work. What's to stop the people on chocobos from fighting, running away at high speed so they don't die in order to escape or heal themselves. You'll end up with a zone filled with people running around on their chickens like they had their head cut off.

Plus, if only one job can be on mounts while fighting what do you think will happen? EVERYONE is gonna tell SE they should let ALL jobs be on mounts while fighting.

It's just not going to work like that in normal experience parties.

So i guess they would have to limit it somehow, maybe something like, you wouldn't be able to sit on your choco when u are not engaged to enemy.
IMO the point of the choco is the added defensive of a mount for tanking purposes. So when you disnegage you get off ur choco and it stands beside you like a wyvern or a pet does when not engaged.
Then in the case of riding ur Choco for transportation you would still have to use the whistle.
In the case of the knight staying engaged and just running off. The could put a radius around the mob, and when the knight is beyond the radius you autimatically dismount.
You could also add a slow down effect to the choco when it is in combat, which would prevent the knight from running away.
Don't think of it as a character riding a choco as it is now(2 entities), think of it is a One completely new character module that has new animations and rules for it.

This looks like more of the same; same zones, same mobs with slightly different armor. Oh, I bet a few new ones will be added, but the majority you won't be able to discern a clear difference if you have /names off. It's the PS2 that's holding graphics back isn't it? And if the elvaan haven't gotten enough of dark, SE loving as is, they give them MORE with this "young griffon" material. Expand on the galka for god's sake. Either that or turn QSC into a raging galka capitol or something.

I predict that access to these areas will be limited by a timeframe mechanic, somehow.

One of the things I have always wondered as I traveled around the game world was what the ruins looked like before they were ruins. Being from windy I often wonder what the Horutoto Ruins looked like as well as Toraimarai Canal (I doubt that differnt considering what they are but still.) Also Garlaige Citadel & the Eldieme Necropolis.
Some places I would sort of imagine what I thought an area might have looked like before the war. Now I may actually get to see it.

As an aside, Sephiroth's sword is just a damn long katana, ANY katana looks like a shorter version of his sword, which is if you remember correctly the masamune, which is in the .dat files of the game. Masamune has appeared in more than just FF7.

I'm excited, here's to hoping
A. This will be a continuous past world with it's own region map.
B. This will provide alternative leveling locations, not in the same vein as our meleeburning ToAU areas.
C. This will have areas spanning a variety of levels, not just high-end.
D. The story will actually have some sort of content aside from cutscenes. (I'm looking at you ToAU)

i think when he said Nodachi he actualy meant Tachi-Gunto whitch is a longer version of a regular Tachi w/ a more pronounced curviture. The Tachi-Gunto was originally meant for mounted combat but later became popular in 1on1 duels. today in japanese culture owning a Tachi-Gunto is considered a status symbol and thus evan poorly made replica are expencive.

Unfortunately, I have to bring the one thing I can geek up on to this. Sephiroth's sword is unique, yes, but if you want to talk about what it more closely resembles, it resembles a Nodachi more. Odachi's (ONE "O") have a supremely unnecessarily long handle, and were more for decoration anyway. Google or Wiki it if you'd like, you'd see the handle is far larger than Seph's. On both the blade is incredibly long, but the Nodachi's tend to be longer because Odachi's have more length in the handle.
Also, you may see some Nodachi's are about the size of regular Katanas, I don't know why people make these things and say they are Nodachi's. Nodachi's were Cavalry Killers, Horse-Cutters if you will. They were designed to cut horses in half, (YES, HALF). They were so large sometimes two people were required to draw one (and sheath one I presume, I know sheathing mine is hard).

There you go, from someone who loves swords.

Preorder NOWZ!

EDIT: Anyone think that maybe, since 20 years ago some/all of our characters could have been alive, maybe it will have something to do with us being *younger* character models in the Young Griffins/other groups similar to the Young Griffins from other nations?

I know they'd have to scale down armor for a group of new character models (1 new model for each race/face/sex/size) and that it's probably way out in left field, but I think it'd be kinda cool >.>;.

I've never been this excited about an expansion and I think it's because I'm so excited about the storyline, of which we haven't had much to go on before the other expansions as they brought something completely knew.

It's just been recently that I've been getting more into the history of Vana'diel and this game already has a much huger backstory then most people realize, and a lot of it is really interesting.

I think it's a great move on SE's part to allow us to get more immersed in the history of Vana'diel, it really will help to bring it to life even more.

Lol, why am I seemingly the only one completely uninterested in this expansion? I feel like the odd man out since I'm the only one not praising the rehashing of same areas, same mobs, same this same that.

Has anyone sat down and thought to themselves "Hey, SE already rehashes everything in game...we have to repeat same actions/missions etc over and over."

This expansion looks like a whole new game...of that ever awesome SE "milk one thing constantly" mentality! Or am I missing something?

I dunno, expansion not released yet and all I have to go on are pics and random text...but still. Guess we'll see when it hits if I change my tune or not. =P

Tau was a very nice change. They made 3 and 4 man teams a workable thing with assault. I've even seen people xp that way. They changed the game to fit the melee heavy job system. The new areas are different and cool looking.

Story is interesting enough. The only real disappointment storyline is ZM, which made up with some of the most popular areas and jobs in the game.

So why not be excited about an expansion? They tend to add good stuff.

They aren't necessarily San d'Orian flags, they're just red flags. You can't see what's on them. Could be a segment of the Jeunoan army or something.

No, that's definitely Jeuno. Those are the bridges and that's Ru'Lude Gardens up on top. That's exactly what Jeuno looks like from outside, like in Rolanberry Fields or from the airship when you're coming in to dock. Besides, there aren't enough trees for it to be Ronfaure.

I also wonder how they'll do this. Will these areas ONLY be accessed during the missions only? Or, like someone else said will they put a portal that will transport you there? If so, wouldn't that mean there will be 2 sandoria's, 2 windies, etc? I know in Ultima Online they did this. The entire game was open PvP so finally enough people cried about it and they made a mirror/duplicate of hte world where no PvP was allowed and you could travel between the two worlds through a moongate. I am very curious how they're going to do this.

I am very amazed on the expansions and such that they are putting out for FF. But, I am also concerned about the advertising. I heard they were going to release, if they haven't already, FF in Europe or something, right? That's cool and all, but what about advertising more in the US or Japan where it's already released? I think they need to bring more players to the game before it dies out. Yea, I know that's the point of releasing it in Europe, but what's the point of bringing new players if we can't understand them? lol
I just think they need to advertise on TV more. This new expansion looks like it would be great advetisement in my opinion.
