Square Enix Takes Action, Apologizes

Square Enix has apologized for its handling of a post-update problem that left scores of players wondering whether enfeebling magic had been ninja-nerfed.

The enfeebling issue -- which stemmed from changes in the elemental resistance rates of some monsters -- was addressed in an emergency maintenance held Thursday. Square Enix’s written apology appeared in the update notes that were subsequently posted on the PlayOnline Web site.

“Regarding the elemental resistance issue, we would like to take a moment and apologize for the delay in both notifying players and correcting the issue,” the statement said.

The staff at Allakhazam.com applauds Square Enix for issuing an apology. We hope this marks the beginning of improved openness and communication, which can only serve to benefit the developers and playerbase of FFXI. (UPDATE: Square Enix Responds to the Community on the Allakhazam Forums!)

It is also our hope that our amazing community continues to speak its mind about important issues in the game. As administrators, we will strive to do the same.

I don't understand this. Player's were complaining about lower avatar perpetuation cost? Or was it because some mobs were not resisiting lelmental magic?

Grats to Square for apologizing, and while it could have been because of that scathing article, I imagine it was more of a "wow, what the hell is the matter with RDM/BLM's... let's figure it out". Once they figured it out they noted the "elemental resistance" known issue, and then promptly fixed it.

We always knew it was "Enfeebling Magic" however we did not realize it was due to elemental resistance. It is entirely possible SE didn't realize what it was at first, couldn't find a problem, and couldn't announce anything until they figured out what was wrong. As someone who writes relatively large programs which are nowhere near as complicated as FFXI, I can understand this.

Maybe they did know but didn't say anything, but they did apologize "for the delay", but that doesn't mean they could speak before they actually did. A FEW monsters were having enfeeble issues... and they traced it back to something weird in the ELE-Resistance... It's taken us several months to find lesser bugs in some of the things we write...

Please do not rail poor Squenix too much, they found it, announced it, and then fixed it. But they couldn't do any of that until they found what the issue was. Sometimes that takes time.

What was the SMN glitch? I don't remember seeing any mention or complaint of it, though I'll admit I didn't look in the SMN forum lately.

If you use a black mine in campaign (30 AN) while an avatar is out, the MP perp cost of said avatar would be cut in half and in some instances have free cost avatars. It's a glitch that has been around since WoTG came out and they are just now addressing it.

Seriously, you won't be @#%^ing happy until SE releases a full sized Bahamut avatar you can @#%^ing ride and use to kill players that annoy you, one shot AV/PW/Shinryuu, and burn the FFXI nations to the @#%^ing ground for fun. All while actually restoring mp used instead of costing any.

This is how we do it...

I'm glad they finally addressed it.

...that being said, I'm also disappointed what it took to make them address it. When there was a well-written article in a fairly public place calling them out on a mistake they made, and bashing them for their inaction, they finally address it the very next day.

It seems oddly familiar...like when there was bad publicity regarding the Pandemonium Warden fight, they quickly "fixed" it shortly after to rectify the situation. It seems like scaring SE with bad publicity is the only sure-fire way to get things done...

It just makes me upset because it feels like they wouldn't have bothered doing anything until they felt like they had something substantial to lose if they didn't act.

This is very encouraging, and I too am glad of the swift action. However I can't help but wonder - Should it really take a scathing editorial and flood of angry comments for them to even admit the mistake in the first place? Hopefully SE takes this to heart and doesn't necessitate a repeat performance.

I must also applaud SE, and I also hope this issues in a new age of communication from SE and the player base; yet I'm left with a feeling that the stink that was made by the player base, and the new two million mark, may have had more impact than any new age in communication.

However, with that being said, I would also like to applaud Allakhazam, individual players, and the general playerbase for not accepting silence from Square Enix.
