Regarding Malicious Third-Party Programs in FFXI

This morning, Square Enix released an announcement pertaining to their actions taken against a malicious third-party program creator and any users of said program, as well as any actions that will be taken in the future in regards to other programs that give unfair advantages to players.

Discuss this on the Zam Forums!

From Playonline.com:

Over a period of time, we have been monitoring an individual responsible for the creation, sale and distribution of 2 third party tools in violation of the rules of the FINAL FANTASY XI service and various state and federal laws. The tools were utilized by players and gil farmers to gain an unfair advantage over other players in a variety of ways. As a result of our investigation, we have taken appropriate action against the individual, have halted distribution of the programs and have disabled the servers used to run them.

We are in the process of investigating other third party tools originating in the U.S. and abroad and will take similar action against the creators and their customers when we are ready to do so. We have a zero-tolerance policy against any attempts to artificially manipulate FINAL FANTASY XI gameplay or the PlayOnline service. Usage of third-party tools will not be tolerated within the FINAL FANTASY XI community, and we will continue to ban user accounts for consumers of these products and will potentially take legal actions against those who create the tools.

We would like to remind players that, in addition to adversely affecting game balance, using third party tools or cheats can also have potential consequences that are not immediately obvious, as they often contain damaging viruses and Trojan horse programs, which may result in the transmission of account details.

We continually strive to create a fun and balanced environment for FINAL FANTASY XI, and we hope that our efforts ensure that our players continue to enjoy the experience.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding

nothing at all to be happy about. it just shows how much they care about "3rd party tool creators and their customers" - shutting them down a COUPLE years too late when the game is about to die anyways.
too little too late

Yeah, they should take action against botters. I don't see windower as a problem in and of itself. If SE could give us a "windowed" mode that works as well as 3rd parties have, honest players wouldn't turn to 3rd party tools. Also, this is a bit too late. The servers are getting less populated as people leave to other games or cancel because they know SE won't support XI with XIV on the horizon.
Woot!

I'm vehemently opposed to all forms of cheating, no matter how "trivial" they may seem to the offenders. Yay SE!
it's been years

Too late SE, too late. said players have taken advantage for years.

Uhh, what about Windower and APRadar? While it does offer some enhanced functionality, I feel I probably wouldn't play the game without the two... Why shouldn't I know the TP of my party, and why can't I have a minimap? Those two would have been packaged in if SE actually did UI upgrades. Quite frankly, if they extend the ban hammer to people that use those two programs, I'll just stop playing and wait for FFXIV, lol.
About time...

I assume this is FFXI-APP and... What's the other one called? NASA? It only took them 3 and a half years, you keep at it SE! *rolls eyes*

Doom to hackers!
Unaisis must have been slaughtering too many hackers for SE not to take notice.

He is a man of his word, apperently.
A good start

Excellent. Ban all botters, POShackers and gilbuyers.

I sincerely applaud SE for finally doing something.
