Facebook Acquires Oculus VR for $2 Billion

The company announced a $2 billion dollar deal today.

Facebook has announced that it has reached a deal with Oculus VR to acquire the company for approximately $2 billion dollars. It hopes to extend Oculus' existing advantage in gaming into new areas such as communications, education and more.

“Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow,” said Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. “Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.”

Oculus VR had this to say about the deal on their blog:

At first glance, it might not seem obvious why Oculus is partnering with Facebook, a company focused on connecting people, investing in internet access for the world and pushing an open computing platform. But when you consider it more carefully, we’re culturally aligned with a focus on innovating and hiring the best and brightest; we believe communication drives new platforms; we want to contribute to a more open, connected world; and we both see virtual reality as the next step.

Not sure how I feel about this. Seems kind of odd. I can understand that Mark maybe wants to be there as on of the 1st to try and get head sets to be used for more then just gaming. I get that. Seems odd Osculus would not just reach out to other companies.

My hang up here is I'm now going to have to link even more stuff to FB? If I wanted the world to know everything about me and what I do, when I do it, I'd be one of them uber b/vloggers.

If the buy out helps get the headset out faster, ok I guess. I see Sony has something coming out as a well...

Edit: And so it begins (what I feared would start to happen): Notch cancels Minecraft for Oculus Rift, but other developers still have interest . Hopefully he is the only one that has decided to stop. Other devs seem to be ok with the FB purchase as it does tag a well known name to it,
