Just a thought. Has it occured to anyone they too live in America? I mean, When else would they update it? Would they work at 2 in the morning just to help Americans?
I too am annoyed by this. But I need to at least try and understand their motives

Actually, the people who do the server maintenances probably live in Japan where the servers are...

And even if they did live in America, it is their job to let us play as much as possible. That's what we're paying them for. It makes more sense for a small group of people to be up late and GETTING PAID to do work than it does for hundreds of thousands of people to be up late and PAYING to play.
Solution!

Just stay up all night Sunday and go to bed right before the update starts, then when you wake up it should be done (or close to).
My view on this....

I would think, most times when they bring all the servers down is followed by a patch when they come back up.

As for the Labour Day thing, not much you can do about it. Oh sure, you can ***** and moan all you want, but, let's face it, we've already been billed for September, and the only way your threats will carry any weight is if you quit playing because of it. Sure, customer satifaction is important, but frankly, I can't see people cancling their service in enough numbers for them to notice a difference, and I know not many are willing to just up and quit to prove a point. Sure, their pissing off half of their player base (myself included) but we'll all keep paying every month to play.
Sometimes I wonder about people...

Curse Square-Enix for doing server maintenance on an American holiday when they, and the servers, are based in Japan.

Logic? Who needs it when you can be an impatient and short-tempered American. Quick all of you! Watch out behind you! It's a GM saying bad things about you and your imperfect Partying abilities to a group of known Japanese Fish Botters!

::sigh::

Don't you people who complain about the downtime have something else to do? Why not go to a Labor Day parade and celebrate the holiday? Get a BBQ going and invite your friends, have a good time. Grab that book you've been meaning to read or finish. Take a day trip to the beach and enjoy the ocean before the summer ends. Bring your significant other to a nice resturant and enjoy a night out on the town. There are many, many things to do that, I believe, are better than FFXI.

But, this is your life, yours alone. Do what thou wilt.

Edit - Fixed spelling error.

and write Square-Enix a Feedback saying that you are pissed off that they rarely take into consideration NA players when it comes to things like this.

Here's my question, though. Will this maintenence be server and hardware only, or will they also throw in the game patch update with this?

They did say it'd be sometime before the CoP release. Why not kill two (three?) birds with one stone?
Frustration=> {Understood}
# Sep 03 2004 at 5:30 PM Rating: Decent
I understand everyone's frustration, especially 9-5'ers and those that just started back to school that have a 3 day weekend only to find they can't get play time in.

I don't understand why it's a big deal, however. I mean I understand that we're paying for this and that it's during what would be peak hours now that everyone has off of work & school on a holiday. But guys, consider this. As it stands now, there are so many people on the servers, and so much is going to be added with "CoP", as well as even MORE people on servers (with the release in Europe). As far as people saying stuff like "wtf? why do they have to do so many upgrades?" Really, I think if they didn't do so many upgrades, we'd see stuff like what happened at the beginning of last month (with it being buggy after the one upgrade) MUCH more often.

Sorry guys, my plan for Monday is to suck it up and go do something useful. I've been antisocial for *FAR* too long. =^.^=

I tend to sympathize with the people that have 8 to 5 jobs and dont have TIME to play ffxi unless its a holiday, and the same goes for people that only SEE their family in game or cant see them at at all. I really wish SE would consider moving it back just 1 day...

And by the way if they didnt DO maintenance there wouldnt be an FFXI to PLAY.

Buncha crap if you ask me.

If SE can't make a game that needs so much f*cking "maintenence" they should have the nerve to charge 12.95 a month for this.

BTW do we get any sort of a rebate for lost game time over the past month because of their problems? I think not.

Instead we're getting a 30 dollar expansion pack literally jammed down our throats, just another expense in addition to all the $$$ we've sunk into it.

Pfffft, I can hear the critics now, if you don't like it, play something else.

Or else....*shudder*...we could always watch the Telethon...

Please stop trying to start a flame war on this thread. You are holding a text-book "how-to" right now: calling people "********", telling they have no friends, etc.

You made your point, let others make theirs. It's pure hubrus on your part to assume you can speak for ~everyone on this matter.

Judging by the fact that he has one post Sub-Default, and another one getting there, I'd say I'm not the only one who thinks so, I'm just the only one who said it.

And in case you coudln't tell, that was my way of pointing out that they didn't read my post. I never said you had to like it.

And as far as me letting them make theirs? I did, and I replyed, just like what I'm doing here.

Where the HECK did that textbook comment come from?

Um, if you live in America... that makes you American. Feel free to add the sub title if you wish. I.E. African-American, European-American.

If you live here for short times and go back and forth between one country and another, then sure thats an exception.

But if not, your American bub.

I'm the exception. Thanks. Please don't make assumptions.

My point is that something like half of the FFXI population lives in america and so they should take some care when planning updates. My other point, with the response of "go spend some time with your family" or "go outside", et al has to do with the fact that while thay may seem like the norm for the american peoples, it may not be for others. That comment wasn't directed at you.

There are more words after "your family". Read them.

What's wrong with you people? Are you seriously so pitiful that you can't go spend time with your family and/or friends because FFXI is worth THAT much?

SE employees get to work on Labor Day so WE can have an expansion, maybe you'd rather they just delayed that?

I have Family and Freinds, but SE still shouldn't do Maint on a holiday in a region they service when it is reasonable to assume that the demand for the service their clients are paying for will be increased on that holiday.

BTW, I already spend way to mcuh time with my family, my closest friends are working, and now I can't even spend time with my online friends becuase someone in Japan was too lazy to look at an American calendar.

Yes, the maintance is necessary, and I have been through it before, and it was really wasn't a big deal, however, it wasn't on a holiday. I think wanting to play the game I pay a monthly fee for on a National Holiday, after I just worked a freaking 60 hour work week really isn't much to ask.

I also sent SE a polite comment using the url provided in another post here. I would suggest everyone send a POLITE comment about why you are unhappy with the situation. Polite means you don't make demands or threats, you simply state your disapointment, and request that they be more condierate in the future. That way they don't think we are a bunch of self centered a-holes.

Dear CBD,

Please fedex me airline tickets so I can visit my family on Labor Day. Alternatively, you can convince SE not to undergo FFXI maintenance on my one day off work this month so I can spend time playing with them online.

Thanks!

Dear Anonymous,

Please realize that you need to read my entire post before you post a comment. I had a /friends in there for a reason, are you saying you have none?

Of course, you, yet again, prove that it's all about you. How about SE just delays CoP another week, and does the maintence later? That way, we have ANOTHER excuse to make more whiny threads! We can complain that the Japanese get CoP 12 days ahead of us! Woo-hoo!

Uhm... I don't think that delaying one day is going to delay CoP any. This is just their regular server maintenance where I imagine they shut off the servers and use a can of air to blow all the dust out of the fans.
RE: ...
# Sep 03 2004 at 3:06 PM Rating: Default
Dear CBD,

Maybe you also fail to realize that most of my friends play FFXI as well.

I find it hard to believe that if they did the maintenance on Tuesday instead of Monday, CoP would be delayed another week. For one, the game is already RTM for pressing. The manuals and packaging were probably produced in mid-summer; now, all that needs to be done is to print up the errata cards and stuff the boxes. The 4-day delay between NA and EU release and JP release is most likely due to the shipping lead time as well as the inherent 12-to-24 hour delay of certifying release candidates for localization.

Thanks!

Dear Anonymous

Oh, so all your friends play FFXI?

Hello? Are you getting my point? This game is not your life, you can find something else to do! I'm glad to see that you have the sense to realize that there's a reason for the delay, but you're skipping what I'm saying:

There's other things to do. They have a REASON for doing the maintenence on Monday. Has it ever occured to you that maybe, just maybe, they don't do everything on a whim, and they already have stuff to get done on Tues., so they set Mon. aside to do a maint.? Nah, how could that be? If they did, I can only see them bumping it up by a week at the minium, you know, the whole schedule thing?

It seems that you have no insight into SE's schedule process. Doing the Maintenance on Monday couldn't have been that important to their schedule, because they rescheduled the maintenance. More bad news there, they only delayed it a day, not a week.

I understand that there are reasons that SE does these things on monday; if they are like most companies, the people who are behind the scenes work Mon - Fri while the peons work at the other times to make sure nothing bad happens to the servers.

It would be greatly appreciated if I could do what I want with my time on my day off. I wasn't planning to play FFXI, but it's nice to have it around on a day that I could possibly play it for an extended period of time.

I don't feel the need to have to visit my family or my friends on Monday. I see them a lot as it is. In fact, some of my family is working (Mom is a nurse), and some of my friends are working (Food, Entertainment, Retail - not all people get this day off).

I'll do what I want with my free time. As selfish as that sounds, you can't fault me for it (as you play too, you could use that time to work at a homeless shelter).

I have family and I have friends. We will probably do something, but like most people, not till later in the day. When I wake up, I'll be lowered to watching TV, Playing PS2 football, or loading Warcraft III again. Yes, I could do something productive, but that could be said for everytime I play FFXI (or any other game).

I play because it's relaxing.

I use my holidays to relax.

Please don't tell me (or anyone else) what to do with their time.
