I think that it would just be better if the would just make it like a judge match from FF Advance.

You know like this

1) 1 vs 1 up to 6 vs 6. Even 18 vs 18 (but lag would come in to play there)

2) Have a Law system where both parties pick what can and can not be done.

What spells can be used or weapons or armor or whatever.

Have the same 3 flag rule. If you use something that is listed in the rules you picked at the start like a SuperCool sword and hit someone you get a yellow flag if you get 3 yellow flags your out if you hit them and kill them you get a red flag and your out and even if you team wins the may not get anything.

3) Lvl cap the fight to the lowest person. So if a lvl 75 friend want to test his/her lvl 40 friend skills he could.

4) Put it in a place where people can see. Maybe in Ron,Gats,Saruta you know so new people can sit down and watch with out getting gang bang by an Orcich Newbikiller.

5) Make a better signup system so if you would like to have this fight maybe a week later from the date you could if the time lot is free. Maybe a desk or something I can ever find what-his-name.

6) This is the last thing to make it more fun for the people watching. Maybe letting people bet on the matchs. Put up 1k maybe to get 50gil back lol like in real life.

Well thats my 2 cents

(Plz look over any typos my spelling sucks.)

Sun Fire 6800 Server

Whats the key selling point of it?

Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) - Part of the Solaris 8 (02/02) Operating Environment (OE), DR enables you to dynamically
reconfigure, remove or install core system components into your server while the Solaris OE and your applications are running.

And yes FFXI runs on several SunFire 6800s.
For a $20 Million dollar datacenter, thats a lot of downtime.

Guess they haven't heard of the 5 "9s"... %99.99999 uptime. A standard even at lousy ad-firm.

Of course if it wasn't so likely some complete beaner would sue them for $1000,000 for a damaged file in an update due to the litigious ideal enshrined in modern Amercian culture, maybe they'd risk the 99.9999%

Thought I might have a solution for you. To me it sounds like your computer might have a trojan or worm thats eatin up your bandwith through other ports while your trying to update. My advice go get yourself Mcafee security run all the updates and scan your machine because I've got cable and none of the updates have taken over 10 to 15 minutes. Also try a program called pestpatrol you may also have spyware eating up the connection limiting your download speeds. Just a thought I'm a computer tech and see stuff like you described all the time.

Hope that helps

Another thing to mention is usually when you try to run the update, you are downloading the files with about roughly 500,000 other people or more. Bandwidth is not unlimited. So it might not be you that is slow, but SE themselves.

Does this mean there is now going to be "Windowed mode" so you dont need a Windower?

the POL viewer is the program you use to open FFXI. currently, your options with it are Mimize it to the Start Bar, or exit out of it.

I think this update will allow you to change the size of the viewer by dragging the edges out or in (when the little double sided arrows appear as your cursor).

Of course, I could be completely wrong and have absolutely NO clue what im talking about. in that case, you should ignore everything that I have posted in this message :P

Happy Hunting ^^

Hey, if you haven't been playing MMORPG's for very long, then welcome to the world of updates. If you have, well then this should be no surprise. usually about 2-4 weeks before an expansion every gaming service does this. Yes it cuts into our enjoyment, but it's easier for them to change the code now before Promathia comes out rather than after. They will be busy fixing bugs and glitches following Promathia and won't have time to prep the system. So my advice, go rent a movie, do homework, play PS2 Xbox etc until it's over. Hey this is a good time to go out and buy a new game that you want. gives ya some time to goof off while the updates are going on.

you can play in windowed mode with a windower program, but this does violate the TOS you agreed to when you installed the game.

Its Prime time to the EST people. in PST, its the morning/afternoon when people are in the offices at work (most places of employement get out at 5:00 (17:00)). This is their whole day at work.

When you look at it this way, it shouldnt be as big a deal when dealing with the time of day. because im sure they would rather do something else than spend a full day looking at code trying to fix problems, and update ALL of our servers with the exact same patches and updates.

Honestly - I encourage new players. Itll absoulutely kill NM camping - thk God! - and it will make it easier to find a pt. More Players = More ppl in the later areas. I do think that some of the key areas - dunes - spawns should be changed to accomidate more ppl - they are starting to relax, but in 3 weeks, itll be hell on wheels to nab something on the beach.

Total server population will go up, but EU is 6 to 8 hours ahead of EST. The peak times for all 3 regions will still be different.

JP--->(+8hrs)=NA--->(+8hrs)=EU--->(+8hrs)=JP

and so on...

Not to mention they're still 6 months behind the PS2 release. The EU release is PC only as well

Why is it that NA and EU both got the PC version first, but the JP came out with PS2 first? I can understand the delay in PC in Japan, because they're very console-oriented over there, but why should there be any delay at all in North America and Europe between the systems? It just doesn't make much sense. (Plus, the "chubby elitist geek" culture has targets to attack with its oh-so-deadly and painful word: "n00b!!!11," because of this...)

Can't we just end all these "You freaks play this too much" posts?
Obviously some people have more time to play then others, and some people are more into the game then others. Is there really anything wrong with that? Just because someone says that they are bummed about an additional 8 hour downtime, does this really give you the right to assume they are an obsessed FF junkie, or that they have no personal life?
Just let it slide man... so what if someone is more into the game then you are?
chill out
# Sep 10 2004 at 1:15 PM Rating: Decent
It's called a "Massive Server overhaul". Not only are they adding an entire expansion, but they are adding support for an entire other CLIENT. The 8 hrs once ina blue moon IS the norm, and is very understandable.

The extra downtime right now is totally understandable considering the circumstances. I'd rather have downtime NOW, then have everything crash after the CoP and EU release, becasue they were ill prepared. Give them some slack!
Bah! This is gonna be HELL!!!

You know the seven file update that just came out for us PC goers the other day? Well, I'm on cable and the server is funky with me. It took me one and a half hours to download seven files!

I can just imagine how long this one will take!

Anyone got a solution?
Still better than Everquest
# Sep 10 2004 at 1:13 PM Rating: Default
Seriously, if you think this is bad, try playing Everquest. Their 2 hour patches turn into 8 hour patches that end up breaking something else that they have to patch (but don't) instead opting to patch something completely unrelated that never needed patching in the first place, all while releasing expansion after expansion of broken worthless *** content that no one really WANTS to buy but are forced to because they got tricked into clicking the "yes purchase this" button instead of the "no don't want it" button because the two were switched on them, which itself requires patch after patch after patch, AND BARDS AND BOATS ARE STILL BROKEN, DAMMIT!

Boy, finally someone else pipes up on what I've been saying all along. Everquest was (and I guess still is?) HORRIBLE with maintenance and patches. Square has a problem and they fix it and patch it within a few hours. And you don't even have to log off!!! OMG!!

I love getting updates to the game, and getting new material, but didn't they JUST take all the servers down for 8 hours last week?

FYI, a good server up-time is 99.9% or more. With the last 8 hour update on Tuesday, and the 6 hours this will be down on the 13th gives the FFXI Servers a little over 98.0% Uptime. Factor that in with the fact that some of the servers just had their Maintenance (where they did 3 worlds at a time), that would bring it down to 96.9% uptime. Not good for a service we are all paying for.

I used to defend the 8 hour updates, because they happened once a month, but 3 times within a month is a bit much.
RE: Again... :(
# Sep 10 2004 at 2:10 PM Rating: Default
You're comparing apples and oranges. 99.9% is good for file servers and web servers. But those go down for software fixes periodically or certain hardware maintenance or they bring half the cluster down at a time so the site still works just with less capacity. But you rarely update any software or hardware on those. They go down when there is a glitch(Hardware or Software). And a lot of times they don't even count planned maintenence in the down time for file servers and web servers. I worked for a company that had an uptime agreement with a hardware vendor. Planned maintenance did not count at all against the uptime. We could only make a claim if we weren't warned a certain amount ahead of time. FFXI has had very few unplanned maintenance events. How often do you log in and the server is just down (Its not your connection)? So in reality their uptime is pretty good.

All games have to go down a lot like this when an expansion is coming out. Plus, the servers aren't even going to be down for the version update! You can play through and then when the v. update is done you just download it. :O

If you lived in a area where the update time was when you where working or sleeping I doubt it would be a problem.

ok, now by this point i believe we have all established that it's better for it to be down now, rather than after C.O.P is released. Everyone who has a problem with it being down, why not just *Gasp* do something else? Heck there must be some other games you negelcted since buying FFXI.
