Has anyone tried to trade their 'Special Present' to an NPC kid b4 using it? Just got one on my mule..I've been wondering if there wasn't more to this x-mas quest and this just occured to me. I was able to move it into the trade box, but then chickened out. I don't wanna lose my Dream Hat+1...but if i were to find something else under my tree that made it all worth it? ^^ Just a thought..please tell me if you try it out. I may just break down and do it..it's just a mule anyway......

i think the one you're looking for is louevret[sp?] who happens to be the most overlooked child. (i ran past him several times looking for the letters, before i started looking in places i would never have otherwise) he is above the streets on the west side of town (south sandy) in the NPC residential area. if your running towards the area from the AH, when you get to the start of the NPC residential, start targeting people that are on the house balconies. if you find one that has a name very much like louveret, you've found him, just find the walkway to get upstairs to him. hope this helps and isnt too confusing.

My Theory
# Dec 22 2004 at 8:20 PM Rating: Decent
Now I have a theory based on ElTipejoLoco's:

ElTipejoLoco's theory says that each gold present brings you up a joy ranking (which is true btw). Ever notice how the red present price is a 12th of the gold and the orange present price is half of the gold? So I assume that the red presents give you a 12th of the joy that the gold present and the oranges a half.
So:
6 Reds = 1 Orange
2 Oranges = 1 Gold
12 Reds = 1 Gold

So if you treat each red gift as a "joy point", that means you need to get 60 "joy points" to get the 5th joy ranking.

So therefore:
Red = 1 "Joy Point"
Orange = 6 "Joy Points"
Gold = 12 "Joy Points"

And also:
1-11 "Joy Points" = Joy Rank 0 ("Slacking off")
12-23 "Joy Points" = Joy Rank 1 ("A tad-bit")
24-35 "Joy Points" = Joy Rank 2 ("A fair ammount")
36-47 "Joy Points" = Joy Rank 3 ("Barrelfulls")
48-59 "Joy Points" = Joy Rank 4 ("Ridiculous...")
60 "Joy Points" = Joy Rank 5 ("Caravans loaded...")
The REAL way

It's a lot easier to get the hat then most people think. Just give a kid five gold presents that Christina give you every day (or you can buy from her for 1.2k). That should get you the "carriage-full" or whatever joy ranking (make sure you have a tree set up in your house). Then you just go into your house and the moogle will give you the present (make sure to talk to it). Easy, took me only a few hours (mostly waiting).

So, you DONT need all three trees
and you DONT need to wait till midnight Japanese time
Is there anymore?

I did the letters thing in San d'Oria then the tree thing and warped to the other cities to get their trees. When I got back to San d'Oria I put all 3 trees in muh moghouse (gave me Moghouse enhancement 'fishing' :/) and then I decided to give out presents I had left over from the other 2 cities. (Bought 2 stacks low price and 1 stack mid price and just 2 of the expensive ones). I got tired of it after going thru the remaining mid priced stack and 2 exp ones and ran back to muh mog house to change and go level...well, muh moogle had a 'special present' for me!! ;) so time doesn't have anything to do with it, what tree is there doesn't...its whether you're naughty or nice :P LOL ((btw...the fireworks that happens with the 'special present' is soooooo cool!!))

I started this in Sandy, I have high fame there but I've got no idea if that has anything to do with it at all. This is all I needed:

2 3/4 stacks of the cheapo presents
3 gifts from the Smilebringer (the free ones he gives daily)
1 Sandy Tree

I got the three letters from the children, handed them in, then got the tree and placed it in my MH. Then I bought 3 stacks of gifts from the Smilebringer (the cheapo ones, 100 gil each) plus I had three presents that the Smilebringer gave me for free. I went to the moogle and check my Joy... very low. So I found those two elf children in South Sandy and I just spammed them with Trade > Present. Then I talked to the moogle again after each stack (only spamming one child mind you!) And my fame was going up, so I repeated with another stack, the 3 freebie gifts and 3/4 of the third stack. I talked to the moogle again and he said I've got a present under my tree.

No need for all the trees to be in your house apparently. Nor is there any need to find multiple children after you've handed in the letters. Your Joy can still go up while using the same kid over and over w/o zoning.
Santa Hat +1
# Dec 20 2004 at 10:07 AM Rating: Decent
Heres how I got my +1 hat. I obtained all three trees and put them in my moghouse. After obtaining the regular hat; I distributed gifts to the children (some red wrapped, which I bought) and about 6-8 of the EX yellow gifts which I received from the smilebringer in Bastok. While I was in Windurst, I gave some of the EX yellow gifts to the children in the Onion Brigade and the rest to kids in Bastok. The next day, when I returned to my moghouse, my Moogle told me there was a special gift he found under the Windurst tree. I think the +1 hat has to do with giving out the EX gifts you receive from the smilebringer, but I could be wrong :) Good luck!

# Dec 20 2004 at 10:45 AM Rating: Decent
You have to keep at this for a couple days...I also obtained a +1 hat on mule in Sandy by getting only the Sanday tree, placing it in moghouse. When I visited the event moogle he told me i brought "ridiculous" amounts of joy to the children of Vanadiel. The children all told me I brought "barrelfuls" of joy to them. I never needed ludicrous amounts of joy in either character to get +1 hat. The present appeared in Sandy almost immediately after I gave the last EX gift there and visited the event moogle. I dont know why ppl seem to have to wait over a day for theirs. Good luck! HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL.

Dream Hat +1
# Dec 19 2004 at 12:32 PM Rating: Decent
When it comes to obtaining my Dream Hat +1, I had done the tree quest in Bastok only, done the Dream Hat letter quest and traded a few gifts to the children of Bastok. When my joy level was "Caravans loaded with ludicrous amounts", I made my way back to my Mog House and waited a couple game days. No special present.

I think it has something to do with logging off completely for a set amount of time, or like someone else suggested, 12a Japanese time... Anyway, I logged off and went to work for the day. When I logged on last night, I recieved my gift -- a +1 Santa hat! =^.^=

Like someone else suggested earlier, I believe the Dream Hat +1 generates cookies in random amounts when used. I recieved 9 cookies after getting the hat & using it.

=^.^= Happy Holidays!!!

The childrens that accept presents also accept:
- Popstar
- Sparkling Hand
raising your level of "joy".

You can obtain Popstar and Sparkling Hand from the man that gave you the tree (once you got the tree, you won't get more trees but only Popstars and Sparkling Hands).

Hope this will help raising your level of joy.

During Starlight Celebration :

-Jeuno plays jinglish remix of it's own song. Enjoy. There are apparently no other signs of the Starlight Celebration there. Ru'lude's music is still the same as it was before.
-You can only give presents to children in Sandy, Bastok and Windy. Don't even try Jeuno : You'll probably just waste 200 gil or a Warp. However, this is a convenient place to show off your airshipness to save joy.
-Normal presents to the three children you took letters from will count thrice as much as they would usually do.
-When you buy presents, you can get three kinds : Orange, Red or Gold. At least, this is how I see it. Orange and Red give the same message from what I saw ("You've given joy to the children of Vana'diel!") and then there's Gold ("You've given barrelfulls of joy to the children of Vana'diel!"). I did not try to give the three letter children Triple presents, so there may or may not be a difference.
-Smile bringers randomly give you a type of present. I believe you get Orange, Red, and then straight Golds. Note : These do not stack, and are RARE, meaning they can't be sold. You can only sell bought presents.
-Messages from the moogles:
"It looks like you have been..."
"slacking off bringing" 0
"bringing a tad-bit of" 1 gold
"bringing a fair ammount" 2 gold
"bringing barrelfulls" 3 gold
"bringing ridiculous ammounts" 4 gold
"bringing caravans loaded with ludicrous ammounts" 5 gold
"... to the children of Vana'diel, kupo!"
-Warping with moogles, contrary to my previous belief, DOES seem to use up joy. Be wary. If you're a joy freak, and rank 5, take the airship. Or a chocobo. Orrr walk. Note : If you have 0 joy, you can still warp.
-The tree makers' quest won't yield any more trees, even though they're EX, not RARE. You will have to settle with selling them after you're done with them. Don't know if getting rid of them opens up getting them again. You will get either Popstars or Sparkling Hands.
-Here is a place so you can check the time in Japan. Wait until midnight.
-Special Present appears under the last tree you placed in your Mog House's layout. Moogle will tell you he found it under it.

Good luck. Merry holidays, underlings of the strange hat-men.

Two things that I don't think have been noted yet:

1. When you get to the highest level, the message you get when you give kids presents changes from "You brought joy to the children of Vana'diel!" to "You brought barrelfuls of joy to the children of Vana'diel!". This is useful to know because it stops you wasting presents.

2. Warping between nations costs joy. I messed myself up by getting "barrelfuls of joy" for Bastok and then warping between Bastok and San D'oria four times because I couldn't be bothered to find the Sandy Red-Hatter. Not only did it waste the presents I did deliver in Sandy, but it also tore my Bastok joy down to "slacking".

You're right about that. It just happened that that particular present took me to the highest level in both Bastok and Sandy. Hehe, what a coincicence :)

Warping most definitely costs joy: If the Moogle judges you to be "Slacker" (i.e. no joy) then it refuses to warp you.

THIS is how you get the stupid hat!
get all 3 trees and put them in your mog house then give presents until your fame thing gets to ludicris or whatever it is, then at midnight (japan time) it will appear in your mog house. i hope this helps
i haven't got mine yet but most the people in my LS have.
Quest too easy?!?
# Dec 18 2004 at 7:24 PM Rating: Default
Is it just me, or did these quests seem a little too easy? You all remember Summerfest, and Halloween. They were much more complicated than this one.

I don't know. It just seems like there's something missing this time around. What do you think?

Just curious about something. I see others asked the same question and were rated up. I'm just wondering why mine was rated down, and still no one's touched on this topic.

Ok, here is how i got my hat and hopfully this will help some ppl still tryint to get it.

I got all 3 trees and set them up in my mog house
I spent some gil on presents for the kids and handed out 1 present to every kid in bastok. that raised my fame hi enough to where i can recieve my gift
Waited all day, no present
Went to bed, woke up this morning and there it was
I think u need to wait a full real life day in order to get it, or maybe only certaine ppl need to wait that long
And on a side note to a post from some one asking about the charges, the r infinante. the charges never go away when u use them.

ok this is what i did.

Started quests. got my first hat. bought 12 1500 presents. traded them all to one lucky galka in bastok mines. did my bastok tree quest. set up my tree. (i'm from bastok btw) went to bed. (bout 9:30 pacific did this) woke up and went on at about 10:00 pacific and talked to my moogle. he found a present under my bastok tree. took it outside opened it up. saw santyclause and got my +1 hat.

So you don't need all 3 trees.
I do believe you need joy (mine was caravans of joy)
and i think you have to do it one day check back next.

also i have level 4 fame in bastok but i don't think that has anything to do with it.
RE: Finally!
# Dec 18 2004 at 6:53 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, first i never said u needed all 3 trees. i was simply stating what i had done.
And yes, you do need to have your "joy" fam at max. to check this talk to the moogle that gives you the quest to get the first dream hat. you will know your fame is at max when the moog states that you have been bringin caravans of leudicrouse joy to the children of the world.
