Details on Current Known Issues (Feb. 24)

Since the implementation of the latest version update on Feb.23, 2005, several gameplay and system related issues have been discovered. A new update to address these issues has been made and is currently being tested. Players will be informed as soon as a download date has been set. The following issues have been discovered and are being addressed: -an issue wherein players see synthesis and fishing effects even with the "Others' synthesis and fishing results" filter set to ON -an issue wherein players were unable to target certain monsters in Al'Taieu *This issue was addressed during the area maintenance conducted on February 24, 2005 at 3:00 (PST). -an issue wherein if the number of players that leave the battlefield "Holy Cow" is different than the number that entered it, the effect of "Doom" would not automatically wear off -an issue wherein if all players in the battlefield "Test Your Mite" are in the middle layer at the end of the battle, they are unable to act until the battle timer expires -an issue wherein players other than the player who traded the orb were unable to enter the battlefield "Royal Jelly" *This issue was addressed during the area maintenance conducted on February 24, 2005 at 3:00 (PST). We apologize for any inconvenience and are working to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.

I wish there was a way that SE could compensate us for waisted time and energy. like DC'ing in a BCNM and having the whole party dies cause your the whm. Nevermind the exp. points lost Its the grief you have to put up with and it has nothin to do with your ability to play the game. Ok so I am ranting (we all know about this sort of thing and all we get is we are very sorry, when is sorry not good enough)

Well the other day I was fighting some Sahagin in the jungle when I decide to use High jump, which misses, and I receive this message...

"Musey uses AVALANCHE AXE and misses the Stream Sahagin."

Now im not sure if this is due to the patch but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar glitch?

Apparently theres a few graphical oddities that have popped up since the update, mostly involving fishing. But I'm curious, has anyone experienced the "disappearing characters" thing, when NOT fishing?
I know that from time to time, lag can cause character's names to appear without their models. But ever since the update, it's seemed to happen ALOT more, and not just in Jeuno. On a regular basis, in populated areas, I am seeing character names running around with no body, some times quite a few at a time.
Is this possibly a new attempt by SE to ease the lag associated with heavily populated areas, like around AH's and the like? If so, I applaud the effort, because it seems to ease my lag a great deal in Jeuno; yet I can still target those people who's name is all I can see.
The normal choppiness that happens around the Jeuno AH on nights and weekends has pretty much disappeared since the update. It could just be wierd luck, or I could be crazy, but if not, /clap SE!

missing items
# Feb 25 2005 at 4:15 PM Rating: Decent
Um I am not sure if it is suppose to work this way so I am making a note here. While paralyzed when char uses items such as food drinks ect the item fails to activate (paralyzed)but the item is used as in no longer in the inventory. I would expect a failed item to remain in ones bag for use when not paralyzed. I would hope this issue is a bug and soon resolved. as for me no more items usage while paralyzed.

I was partying in Yhoator Jungle on my ninja the other night, and whenever the mandragora countered an attack, it said "Yhoator Mandragora counters <pc>'s attack. 1 of Yhoator Mandragora's shadows takes the damage and disappears." I was like wtf lol, odd... :P

I personally thought the Fishing rod glitch was funny when I first saw it! ^_^ I had just cast my rod for the first time in the new update and my hands were out with nothing in them! I than proceeded to spin the camera angle to find that my fishing rod was sticking out of the temple of a Taru npc directly behind me in the windy docks! I laughed a good ten minutes cuz I'm not a big fan of Tarus.

I have run into issues where I am unable to target Strays in Promyvion. While fighting an MR they pop Strays constantly and about 10% of them I am unable to target via the tab key or F8 (it was closest) but when someone in my party would attack it I am able to target it with /target <bt> so it is not only one area having the problem as listed above.

It's funny that there always seem to be issues after each update.
RE: I think it's funny...
# Feb 28 2005 at 9:15 AM Rating: Decent
It's not funny...It's to be expected. A patch is simply a block of programming that they have installed to fix any known bugs, glitches, errors etc that are currently in the game. These "fixes" are tested, usually on the closed server which doesn't support X^3 players, so while it works on the test server it may cause another one to crash. These patches aren't perfect, they expect errors and expect feedback...positive feedback. Not "square sucks, or square eat me" etc. It is an inconvenience yes, but it's better than having the server shutdown for days to fix a small problem such as the trouble they used to have with Ultima Online, or some of the more archaic MMORPGs. These things take time to fix, and the programmers are human too. They work long hours, usually 12-16 a day, to find bugs, errors, glitches, quirks etc to fix. It's not easy, especially when on one server you may have all the -ga spells work properly, but on another it turns the mobs into furry baby rabbits. (granted that would be hysterical) But the bottom line is everyone just accept these patches, upgrades fixes and roll with it. Yeah it takes time out of gameplay and stuff, but hey, I'd rather suffer a little downtime than to have the entire server crash on me and all my friends one day.

I, along with a few others have noticed "mob lag". A mob will be running/walking its set path, but it will be jumping around as if the mob as lagging. This doesn't play too well when trying to avoid aggro. I have noticed this with only certain mob types though. Goblins, Quadavas, Yagudos are the primary examples. This does not apply to NPC's who move around nor does it apply to PC's.

Anyone else experiencing this strange phenomenon?

Odd, before the update when playing in the relatively uncrowded area of S. Gusta or N. Gusta I experienced "mob lag" while levelling my BST (for crystals for skilling up some crafts). I thought it was just my computer when I watched my charmed lizard standing passively behind me one second when I ordered him to attack, and eating the vulture the next with no "running up to it and attacking" animation.

O.o

This experience is probably the worse when trying to pull, espcially when I was in crawlers nest. I noticed a Blazer Bettle, and tag'd it. I turned around and started running back to camp. Out of now where a Blazer Appears in front of me, Of course I thought this was a pop, but realized, it didn't fade in like a pop. Next thing I know I have two blazer beetles chasing me. What really made me mad, and quit for the night, was the fact an Exoray popped in front on me as well. I knew I was dead then.

After that I Was so ticked off at the game I quit playing. I am just glad it's possibly a known bug and not just a mere isntance that caused me to loose exp...

You know what? I have noticed that hate was not transferring all that well after the update. After a nin/war or pld/war provoked the hate of course seemed to stick. Just no more initial mob turn after I hit it.

Hmm... I thought my SATAs were just being weak (first time leveling THF in a while <.<), but yeah, we were in a 2 THF PT, one of us pulled, PLD voked, SATA on MNK, it USUALLY turned here, and then I SATAed onto the PLD. Their SATAs were a bit stronger (she was mithra with better gear), but I was still pretty sure added with a voke my SATA would steal hate back.. I dunno.

They've seemed to ignore the visual glitches that occur while fishing as well...

Last night I had a blast with the new fishing system, catching almost all the fish that take my bait...

But there were 2 bizzare new 'visual' glitches that showed up. I was on PC, and not sure if it does this on PS2....

But, when I cast, whoever is right next to me disappears, be it an NPC character or a PC character. All you see is their name. This also seems to be a bit distance-related, because I was fishing amongst several people, and those that were next to me, but stll a lil distance away, they'd become transparent.

I tried to grab some screenshots of this madness, but they would reappear when I put away my pole/reel in a fish.

The other glitch I noticed was some characters, when they would cast, their pole would go parallel to the ground, right beneath the person right next to them... From the end tip of that horizontal pole, it seemed the pole would stretch straight up, and would go out past my camera's sights. While, the caster's hands were totally empty...

this would only right itself if that caster got a bite, or would put away their rod...

>_> I should've submitted a bug report on this last night before I went to bed...

but, I *did* get screenshots of pole madness!! I'll have to post those somewhere around here real soon :P

yea i also noticed that the pole dissapeared and they were holding nothing.

I saw a fisherwomen fishing in the zeruhn mines the other day and she had a pole in her hand, but she also had her wand on the floor. At that time i hadnt tried fishing so i thought it was like that...wierd

Yes, the fishing pole graphic error happens about 3/10 casts lol

It's actually quite funny, the pole does pop back at the bite tho.

I believe the first part of your post is in the list of updates:

- During the act of fishing, the surrounding characters will become semi-transparent.

With new system, I may actually get my friends into fishing. ^.^

The vanishing players is intentional, and is specifically mentioned on the official site on the page that lists the changes to the fishing system.

Best guess is that they want to allow players in a crowded area to be able to see which directions their fishing rod is moving so that the players can properly counter the fish's movements.

Doing bcnm runs last night in palbourough mines, I noticed a moogle pop up. Scared the crap out of me really. Everyone else was out side the shrine but me! After the next run, i ran back and the moogle was still there and everyone was still outside training. A GM popped up for a half a second and vanished. I guess just to check the moogle. Was pretty funny.

All the moogle said was that the Royal Jelly bcnm fight wasn't working right, don't enter "Kupo"

It does get quite lively in a spammy way when full or new moon hits the area around the fountain in Windy, or port near the Fisherman's guild.

The good thing is that I have noticed that the whole fishing thing is more social, people clap or comment on the catches, and generally have fun with it.

In the interest of realism, I also think it would be difficult to conceal fish catches from passersby. In other words - remove the public notices of fish caught. I do understand tho that people get tired of all the fishy business.

I propose that the sphere of hearing these announcements be lessened, or introduce a setting for fishing announcement sphere distance or some such.

Best of all, Squenix should put in some real effort, and upgrade fishing with actual graphics of the fish jumping, tugging, and sometimes eventually getting caught, sometimes lost, thereby removing the need for announcements altogether! ^^

On the catch ratio: At a modest fishing level of 35 I am very able to pull in the easies, moaties etc.. I do however strongly advise against attaching any expensive lures to your rods, before you got the new method down pat.

Happy Fishing!

i know this is kind of OT, but i post in hope's of SE reading it.

what i wanna know is... 92+4 fishing skill-- how is it possible that i dont have enough skill to catch something?

i mean 92+4 puts me at 96, @96 i should be skilling up on ryugu titans, and sea zombies-

also the new fishing system is based on countering the action of the fishing pole, so when it goes left, you pull right... but the issue here is that it will go left, and you really dont know how long to hold it right -- cause sometimes it just jumps to the other side and then back again, giving the "catch" vitality back and prolonging the fight to pull it in. this happened on several occasions.. dont get me wrong, i love the new fishing system, but- it just seems extremely hard for me to pull up a fish that im way over cap for.

(and yes sometimes my fising pole just disappears and sometimes while on the steps of the ferry... my taru goes into a walking motion when "something caught the hook")

that WAS all there was to it till now. Now you gotta fight play tug o war with the fish till its stamina guage dries up then hit enter and you stand a fairly good chance of landing it. I personally love the new method aside from the fact that its put fish botters out of business its alot more realistic and now when you catch something it feel less like random luck and more like you actually achieved something

You can still reel in a fish before it has reached zero stamina. Just press the confirm button. If you're way over the fish's skill level you should be able to reel it in... if not, your line will break. More info here.

Has anyone else encountered the missing fishing pole? I understand that there is new animation for the poles and the animations help determine how to reel in your catch, but I have had several occurances of a casted line and the animation for the pole is missing. Not sure if it is a lag issue or just a location issue where I was fishing. I also notice other characters fade to near invisible when they come near you while fishing. I have yet to catch a fish since this update as well. I have had many snags and broken lines, so I guess I have to master the new fishing style. Also got no Skill Ups in fishing with full gear and HQ Anglers boots after nearly 50 casted lines, using various poles/bait/ and locations.

I have also had the issue with the fishing pole animation not being there. As far as players turning transparent when they're near you, that was intended. They mentioned it in the update statement concerning fishing here. Also, I have caught plenty of fish since the update. You're either doing something wrong or you're just very unlucky.

probably just unlucky. I could care less about actually catching the fish, I want my skill ups. 2 more levels in fishing and I am done with it unless I get bored.

Wow, you obviously know nothing about programming or software engineering. To make a program or patch of this magnitude with no faults in it is virtually impossible. Just be thankful that they are correcting it quickly. . .

#REDACTED, Posted: Feb 24 2005 at 12:58 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Of course I know it's complex, but I am saying they could have a test world mirrored like all the other worlds and find the bugs that way. Before they even impliment the updates. That is the whole point that I'm trying to prove so don't go knocking what I am saying. It is just getting really repetitive that every major update they give us is followed by 2 smaller updates and 3 or 4 days of maintenance. It's just silly that we have to pay for a service that is down for 10% of a month followed by an update. When they could be testing the programs before we begin to download the updates.

That's why they have test servers. They do test these updates extensively, but to know the affect of everything on every server once it's implemented is virtually impossible and ridiculous to expect.

When 10% = 3 days and these days are rarely consecutive, I'm willing to cut them a little slack for providing me with a gaming experience I have yet to find elsewhere.

Hey Locke! ^_^

Well, to say, I work on pretty large databases, and I will say, no matter how much you test, mirror, and tweak development code, until you put it in prod, have the unpredictable phenonemon of user behavior work with said code, and just see how the code will work with standard user lode, you can not find all the bugs. Even then, a bug might only occur if a certain rarity happens, say a Mithan Model wearing X gear looking in x direction in H-G of zone x will cause a hume in j-9 standing in x direction doing x to disconnect, or something. It's pretty complicated, and trust me, large scale systems like this are living breathing creatures and can be unpredictable.

This is way too harsh. Every program ever made has bugs, and every significant update to a program has unintended consequences (particularly in the corner-cases, which most of these problems are.)

Considering the complexity of FFXI, the program is quite solid and SE is very consciencious about fixing the few problems that slip through.

I too am experiencing some grief. Mine began the afternoon-evening before the update. Play Online currently randomly boots me from within the game. Straight to the desktop with a "Play Online has encountered and error and is forced to shut down" error.

Did reinstalling the software fix the problem? I don't mind doing it if that's what fixes it, but I would hate to sit and re-download all the updates if it doesn't even fix the problem.
