My friend, who had imported this game during PS2 JP first launched, he told me horror stories about the first week of FF's launch much like the one we are experiencing now, except then the patch lasted over a week. I remembered when he told me that a friend of his in Japan called the customer service hotline and was greeted by a sobbing female customer service agent, appearantly crying from "chatting" with other outraged customers. When I heard that part of the story, I was pretty skeptical about what he had told me, until today. The reason was that SE was not prepare, or had anticipated, the high volumn traffic.

Perhaps this is a story long forgotten and we needed a little reminder?

Everyone saying "I've tried for 3 hours blah blah.."

I've been downloading the update (or trying to) for over seven hours now and have gotten booted from the update download over 28 times, probably by those who are clicking retry every five seconds.

woot just hit 8 hours of trying to download and still getting errors iv goten so close though down to 1 min then a dam error. why does this have to be like that. this has never happend to me befor. DAMN SE needs to stop adding stuff that no one will ever use that would help out alot. and make downloads smaller that would help.

ok, this is likely to never happen, but just a thought. SE has had this massivly overflowed network problem every update that i can remember. there are just too many people trying to do the same thing at the same time. why not implement some sort of BitTorrent type of programming to spread this load? i mean sure there is a possibility that the download rate will be slower, but with tens of thousands of users, it could possibly be faster due to the massive amout of peers. id rather get the download done in one try, even if it takes a little longer, than having to repeat and start over. just a thought.

Consider something else when you mention the BItTorrent option...

Once the "users" are involved in the distribution, SE can no longer vouch for the integrity of the files. It would not take much for a "hacked" file to make it's way into the system...

You think the current DDoS or the cracked version of FRAPS (which can be used to steal data from your system) is bad? Torrent the FFXI files and those will seem like the good old days...

All they need to do is add a que list they are just too lazy to make something we can actually could use instead of, "New and improved friends list!" I don't know anyone who gets on POL to just use their friends list. -.- They need to just make a line so only so many people can download the update at a time. That would make everything a lot easier and faster -.-;;;

the only thing im worried about is that all this work ive put into trying to become the best 75 rng i can be, is now gonna be taken with a grain of salt by the older 75's cause they had to work harder for their place at the top. i just think us upcoming 75's arent going to be respected ><

My big discovery! So I was finally able to log in, I went fishing on the ferry and caught a few Sea Zombies which you can now turn in for the "inside the belly" quest. I got a Drill Calamary from one of them, some new Ex type of bait I don't know where to fish with...

to the people who say that noobs will get to 75 faster, blah blah. First, props on getting 75 the old way, but shut yer trap with yer whinin. I know enough lvl 75 folks that are still noobs in their jobs, and you are prolly one of them if you whine so much. Go hunt serket and be quiet plz.
The old way was so herky-jerky in terms of exp limit increases. Now its all smoothed out, since the exp cap was raised to 75. Now whatever new job you undertake, it will just be easier on your time. Watch, when you lvl a new job, and you will, or quit altogether, you will be so happy with the new system.

I patched in about 45 min and was playing fine until all you late leechers had to congest the server... lol just kif\dding... although was nice to walk through lower jenuo with no lag... was like walking through sandy... but there were only 750 ppl on at the time... was really lonely cuz I was a lvl 19 bed lookin for a pty in qufim... me and 3 other ppl there and they were lvl 75... >< no pty for me... only good thing about getting patched early is that you have free reign to camp whatever NM you want...

oh well, back to trying to reconnect, if I can only get past the version check......

The reason this is happening is cause of all the tards that just keep hitting it and hitting it. The damn servers are timing out, so what do people do? Keep on ******* it up for everyone. But seriously tho, what kinda company launching an update THAT big and isn't prepared for the kind of workload of their server. Ten bucks says it's all coming from one internal network and one server...
Ummm....

#1. Relax, it's only a game.

#2. The announcement for Version update has been out for days, if not weeks. Never schedule anything (BCNM, Gardening) within 12-24 hours of a major update.

#3. The exp curve past 50 was the wierdest thing I have ever seen. In an effort to balance, SE decided to do this. Bravo - no more rediculous changes in the curve. What does it really mean?

More high level characters-> more people doing HNM's, God runs, etc-> More endgame content (and an increaed lvl cap??? :p)

#4. SE has network issues when a kazillion people rape their servers by clicking "RETRY" a thousand times a second. You want server issues? Go play WoWarCraft. Ill stick with no FFXI for the night.

and Last but not least....
5 things you could be doing other than trying to update FFXI
(5.) HOMEWORK - (allright, not really...)
5. Read a book. RA Salvatore or Terry Pratchet anyone?
4. Get to bed early for the first time in forever. FFXI will still be here when you return.
3. Watch a movie - Sideways is good.
2. Go outside, and sit down for an hour. Real stars - believe it or not, these one's don't affect crafting!
1. Call a friend. Whine about the server outage, whine about the exp change, whine about the homework your not doing. Odds are there not getting in any faster than you are.

And for the most part....

GET OFF THE SERVER SO I CAN DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE !!!111ONEONEONE11 ;P
/sigh

Honestly I think they could have split this update into several smaller updates. I got about 67% in and the darn thing got stuck on one music file so I had to cancel after sitting for 45 minutes only to see my Time Remaining clock go up.
And now it gets stuck on 35% of the Update Preparation.

Stupid SE, I was less then an hour to finishing this stupid download and it freezes on me. And now if haven't even been able to get passed 13% on the first screan, this is pissing me off. They shouldn't make downloads this sticking big and also if a person is less then an hour left on the download it should just be able to pick up right then not have to download all 2 hours that were already downloaded. I actually had things planed for tonight :/

I suppose that Squeenix underestimated just how much traffic they would be getting when they released this new patch, though I can understand why it's so congested and I'm unable to log on. Judging by what they added, it's going to take me hours to properly download this fully, as it will for many, many others, ergo, those who popped in a little later are going to have to just wait in line like any good customer and hope we reach the register soon.

And as far as the EXP change is concerned, good riddance to the shoddy, asinine system that was there, originally, I say. Though I feel for the ones who worked so hard to get to lvl 75, I think they can agree as well that the system was majorly hijacked from lvl 50 onwards. Besides, how many high lvls have complained about the exp being insanely high and wished it was lowered? The only downside I see to this is the loss of exp Lvl 75+ had, which isn't much of a downside at all. After all, if you suffered to lvl 75 with such jacked up rates, you can suffer to remake that exp, too. If you're going to argue over how something is stupid, at least make a valid statement first. Thank you.

You would think that since this happens EVERY DAMN UPDATE that they would expect it by now.

Of course, you would also expect them not to release another major update without having a solution to the congestion problems.

I guess that makes too much sense though.

I must admit, the FFXI service the last 2-3 months has been at an all time low. This gets more pathetic everytime.

Granted. However, I'd like to know how many people bring this matter to SE's attention as opposed to those who ***** about it on forums such as this. Those who complain about the service being crappy but don't even give the slightest thought to possibly telling those in charge about the problem are the ones I directed my initial comments to.

Of course, finding out just how to register a complaint to POL is a task in and of itself... Their main site's a freakin' maze. Either that or I'm blind and/or stupid. And yes, lately, the service has hit the ******* relatively speaking. WoW and EQ2 did their damage quite sufficiently. I wonder how much longer FFXI is going to up before it closes altogether. (Not being paranoid, just a thought.)

Well. I'm glad I'm getting very far in my book, but this is still rediculous. Somehow I doubt that if you can fully expect tens of thousands of downloads of an update once released, and you have realeased many updates in the past and experienced this numerous times before, that it is impossible to make these updates easier to download. Come on, SE!

Oh well. This is probably a message from the literature gods telling me to visit sometimes. lol

But for the most part, they can push us around because they know we like to play the game. And losing a few players isnt going to hurt them.
