I like the way people think SE is the bad guys and actually think they have the power to stop these things. Look, they don't map our their finances and powers to use but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I can still play 98% of the month, that's all that really matters.

This is a Denial of Service attack. What is means if you flood a server with trash information. Servers only support a maximum amount of connections, so when vlaid users come along they cannot get in becuase some 11 prick learned houw to use zombies.

Just looking to see what's happening,
Is anybody else getting stuck on the black screen with 'downloading data' in the bottom right corner?
Every time I get there it just sits there, then a while later says 'No response from server'.
Is this my fault or did their maintenance just not work?

Peace,
Dyunei

I use to get this when I first installed the game.
It happened because my firewall would block the connection, just changed my firewall to allow it through and it worked fine.

Make sure your firewall settings didn't change.

Uncheck my firewall, still experiencing Pol-error 1003, but tried it several times and freeze when it started retrieving messages.

Turn-off computer, log back on and most of the time it works.

Bah. They just cut and paste the DDoS excuse for everything these days. It's an effective way to blame some mysterious and evil third party for their network/systems troubles.

Maybe SE is actually part of an undercover cyber-crimes sting operation with Japanese police forces, thus, SE is not allowed to actually fix anything so they can track down the bad people...yeah! Thats it! At least that would explain why SE can't get a handle on their DDoS problems despite months of hearing "We have confirmed that this is due to a continuous DDoS attack from anonymous third parties. The recovery process is now complete." Complete my a** lol

You dont know what a DoS attack is do you? They are easy to pull off and there is no defence against it than having an AMAZING isp. A Isp that will bend over backwards for you and still manage to suck your ****.

I dont mind when they are havinf this DoS problems, they have to wait for thier ISP to change thier IP addresses and update thier dns records.

Siiiiggghh. Yes, I know what a DDoS attack is. I understand it is not entirely up to SE to prevent; however, given the scale of their available resources it is somewhat difficult to explain how they are seemingly unable to make any headway against these attacks. Does SE not maintain its ISP in-house? They have 5 subsidiary companies in addition to Square-Enix. Surely one of them is an ISP.

I was attempting to be light-hearted about all of this. If you would prefer, next time I'll just limit my response to the standard whining, complaining, and demanding $.25. lol. Where is my quarter! Give me my quarter!!!

Distributed Denial of Service.

Send lots of info from many different places to clog a servers bandwidth. Usually done by a virus or scripts infecting random peoples computers, then using those computers to attack the target server.

This is the number one reason you shouldn't download/use third party programs, things like this could be hidden within them. Even so called 'reputable' sites may be infected.

seriously...if anyone else remembers the .Hack games for PS2, or has seen the anime .HACK//SIGN, then this is EXACTLY like what was happening there...i wonder what would REALLY happen if someone were to try to enter a restricted area or stay online after the server "Supposedly" shut-down...there is something very deeper than this.... and for the guy that said

A Joke
# Sep 04 2005 at 3:21 PM Rating: Default
People are complaining because SE's been claiming a DDoS attack since the big July update. This is getting absurd. Its not possible for a DDoS to continue for over a month. SE is just covering their asses because their servers are starting to break down and they cannot figure out how to get them going.
RE: A Joke

Just for the record the DDoS attacks started in December when they enabled your computer to act as a server using a Windows Service, this used to be turned off on my machine December 19, 2004 thier game stopped working due to me not allowing this service, once restarted and fixed thier game worked the DDoS attacks are using a known Vulnerabilty of this service. through the use of third party software. this game since December has now been down 3 Weeks 2 days and 6 hours for DDos and Maint. and such. Yes I'm still tracking thier downtime.

I don't think calling people idiots is really a nice thing to say! We had a genuine question that just because you can't figure out what we meant, doesn't make us an idiot. Try thinking about what we meant instead of attacking people.

What people want to know is that if SE's servers are being attacked, and items could be lost, will items already in our inventory, Mog houses, and storage be lost? It seems to make sense that items in a treasure pool would be lost, that goes without saying!

I don't care if I lose a few treasure pool items, some might if they had just finished a HNM but I WOULD care if my scorpion harness, elusive earrings, jagd gorget, or other expensive items are lost due to a server attack that damaged and corrupted data stored.

I guess asking about this is really pointless anyways seeing as no one is really going to know 100% until we can all log back in so I guess it's just not worth talking about anymore.

Could someone explain what the time period for this maintenace for me please? Or am I confused on time zones? (I think PDT is west coast time for the US)

no, you're CDT... learn the time zones ppl, lol... CST = Central Standard Time CDT = Central Daylight Time.

Standard = NOT daylight savings time (winter)
Daylight = daylight savings time (summer)

Sorry, really pointless post, but I see this problem way too often online...

You idiots. They mean that items will be lost if they're in the treasure pool at the time maintenance starts. They didn't want people doing dynamis so you wouldn't get a piece of Relic armor, and have it lost because nobody had recieved it by the time maintenance had started.

Wow, everyone gets on here and does nothing but complain. SE is trying to deal with the DDoS attack. It's not something they can just "fix" and think it'll never happen again. I mean, if you could just install something, and never have to experience any viruses, hackers, or attacks on the servers, then the Internet would be perfect, huh? Get over it, they're trying to fix it.

And for those that say "Oh, I pay for this game every month, and I want my money back!" -.- Give me your address, I will mail you the 25 cents you are losing because of this.

And the reason they can't guarentee your items is probably because some server data may be lost from the attacks. Now, while I believe they should have some sort of backup servers.. they don't. So whatever, just get over it, and do something else with your Sunday.

it never fails. someone always takes up for SE when they are least deserving of it. do you think that that microsoft or yahoo or google are immune from DDoS attacks? they're not. however i have never once experienced or even heard of them taking down their servers to "fix" a problem such as this. besides, anyone else on the planet that couldn't hide behind the "it's a game" excuse would be fired for taking down the servers. especially as often as this. SE should be held to the same standards. afterall, when it comes down to it, their servers do the exact same thing as anyone elses servers do: send and receive information. that's it.

Of course it sometimes fails. I've already seen Google down, and I remember when 3-4 out of 7 of the main internet routers were down because of a DDoS (cannot remember the name of these servers, maybe someone could help here). Was in 2003 or 2004 if memory serves.

So I believe that if main internet routers can be "downed" by a DDoS, with all the money that's put in these devices, then comparatively "small" SE servers can be put down too even easier.

was said in the past this was disgruntled Chinese ppl attacking Japanese servers, in order to make as many Japanese suffer playing this game as possible.

If thats true, what the hell are these idiots doing denial of services pranks at 12:00 pmest in the US, which is somewhere around the middle of the night in Japan?

Are these goofballs stupid, or do they just have f'ed up watches in their house???

Hey, doofuses... youre only affecting NA players mainly! Japanese are sleeping now!~ Go get a life.
RE: whos attacking who?

Um... how many NA do you know that play mostly at noon? NA peak hours are about 8PM-1AM. Japanese peak hours are the same, but for their timezone, which would make 12PM (our time) right on target.
People play at night because they have work or school during the day. "Think before you flame."

Keep in mind we're paying for this service each month. And how often had we had to sit and wait to play because of all of theses problems? Many,Many hours! Be nice if we got a Refund for time lost or they leave us sum gil in our mailbox:)
RE: server maitenance
# Sep 04 2005 at 3:41 PM Rating: Good
There are 720(30days)/744(31 days) (672 in February) hours in a month and you want a refund for not being able to play 3 of those hours?

The 3 hours lost are worth $.10 at 12.95 a month.

As for the gil thing, that would destroy the economy if they gave everyone gil every time we couldnt play. It would be like pouring gasoline on it and lighting it on fire.

SE said:
Please note that we do not guarantee any items that may be lost during the period of the maintenance.

I just logged in, started playing in rolanberry fields, then disconnected. There were no messages about emergency maintenance. What's this about losing items? SE cannot guarantee that all our items will be there when we get back? O.o

Possibly would warrant maintainance to block out the program. i saw a video of it before posted on another forum and it showed you some JP player at low lvl fighting a rabbit then started healing a good distance away from it then when the rabbit got near the character warped a good distance the other side of the rabbit just a small occourance there but apply this to BCNM's and such would really unballance the game to some people
poor allakhazam.

Can you imagine how much more loaded allakhazam's server becomes each time SE pulls crap like this? Everyone hops on to see what everyone's posting, and to see when we can get back in the game to kill more time on the weekend.
