The Doll Festival

Get ready once again for Vana'diel's Doll Festival! The Doll Festival is a solemn Far Eastern celebration in which displays of dolls and sweets are used to congratulate young girls on their growth. The festival is supposed to be for young girls only, but leave it to the moogles to find a loophole. During the last Doll Festival, the M.H.M.U. (Mog House Management Union) worked with Windurst's Rhinostery to develop a special variety of rice cake that turned anyone who ate one into a little girl! The moogles' original plan was to help grown women recapture their childlike innocence and relive the old days for a short time. In reality, however, the moogles misunderstood the event and laid down some rather unusual rules for obtaining the cakes, transforming the solemn festival into a giant fiasco! The guards were quite upset with the entire ordeal... That wasn't enough to get the moogles down, however. Now they are responding with firm resolve: "We want to give rice cakes to the adventurers again, kupo! We learned a valuable lesson last time, so this time we'll make getting the cakes simpler. It'll be the most solemn, super festival you've ever seen!" They even seem to have managed to persuade the guards to let them try again, with their rants of how the festival started out of a desire to do good... It doesn't end there, though. According to separate reports, the real story is quite different. It seems that the M.H.M.U. spotted a prime business opportunity with the last Doll Festival. The reports state that the moogles are planning to advertise their rice cakes by handing out small samples, and then make a fortune selling the rest by dubious means. This seems to imply that poor management of M.H.M.U. finances has led to desperate measures, but the actual facts are enveloped in mystery. Will the moogles' plans live up to expectations, or are they preparing a recipe for disaster? Be sure to join in the celebrations and find out! [Event Details] This event is scheduled to commence on February 28, 2006 at 16:00, and will last until March 14, 2006 at 0:00 (PST). [How to Participate] -You can only receive one item per day from the moogles. -New adventurers must wait a period of one Vana'diel day after character creation before receiving an item. What's the point of these cake things? is the whole idea of the festival literally to just run around as a little girl?

Hinamatsuri (Girls' Festival) occurs on March 3rd and is an occasion to pray for young girl's growth and happiness. Most homes with girls display dolls for the Doll's Festival and dedicate to them peach blossoms, rice cake cubes, special colored and diamond-shaped rice cakes, white sake, and other items. The origin of hinamatsuri is an ancient Chinese practice in which the sin of the body and misfortune are transferred to a doll and washed away by setting the doll in a river to drift away. When this practice spread to Japan, it was linked to girl's playing with dolls and in the Edo Period(1603-1867), was developed into the Hinamatsuri.

>>>For information on Hinamatsuri click here<<<

In the game we don't play with dolls but instead become them. Hope this helps.

Weren't these called something like mochi last time around?

I guess you can't use them out of town. That'd fun though. Party been waiting for you in Crawlers Nest and in comes a little girl. ^^ Oh well...

Mochi was from the boys event. Thus the Mochi turned anyone into little boys. ('-'*)

I normally don’t post here but I thoroughly enjoy these events. The Doll Festival has been especially fun. I still have rice cakes from last year and use them now and then to play tag in the major towns for giggles.

These events, for me, bring a change from the mundane and monotony of leveling or crafting or questing or mission work. I’ve noted over the years that the “partner” theme seems to be spreading more, which I really enjoy.

Events have never cost that much to do either and are always a lot of fun to do. If they cost a bit like getting the Lady’s Yukata, from another past event, it’s not really that much. Even the Halloween “Trick or Treat” event from the previous years was fun and not that expensive, (just have to shop smart or take up a craft). It will be interesting to see what changes occur this year and how much the moogles will charge with the bungled economy.

I think it is also wonderful how the events mimic real life events and yet have a twist that matches the game. Supposedly characters missed out on childhood during the last Great War and this event allows us to recapture what we missed out on (trying not to get into much detail to spoil the plot for others).

When I get enough information to get a walk through together I will post it on our site CosmicEnigma (or go to http://www.cosmicenigma.net and click on Forum and look under Scheduled Events or the Calendar). Until then start dreaming of tea parties, playing tag, and having fun.

So, by selling the rice cakes, could this be an attempt at a gil sink?

Everything in this game is a gil sink. It's in SE's best interest to do everything in their power to try and make people spend the most time and gil on whatever they can. The more time and gil spent on <whatever>, the more time and gil you'll keep spending on <whatever>. Don't get me wrong though, I love these events :P.

I know my pockets are always empty after a major holiday. I spent almost 200k on the vendors while trying to get a treat staff last halloween. Still didn't get it. =/
Flee...wheeee!
# Feb 23 2006 at 1:21 PM Rating: Good
Try using "Flee" with AF boots that increase Flee duration to 45 seconds and use a Tarutaru Rice Cake right after. What happens is that you are now like 1 foot tall and running at top speed, it's hillarious!!! Well, gave me a good laugh anyways, that's all that counts right? If you do this "then" run into a crowd of ppl, they don't really know what you did and just see this little tiny girl shooting around like a rocket. To make it even better, make sure you zip in different directions at random intervals.

I still think there is some more to these rice cakes than meets the eyes, you know; that they could be used for something serious, for a quest or something, so I kept a 12-pack of each since last year (plus the boys ones). Lol. And now you can get them easier, hmm, did someone mention 20k... each?...

Actually if you equip the Pitchfork +1 item from the Halloween 2005 event and you use a rice cake, it will allow you to run faster in a city. It's like an instant Republic/Federation/Kingdom Aketon....until you zone. Better than just tossing them I suppose.
DId u notice

Umm... K.

I suppose that would be why they are only giving out a few free cakes to a character, then the rest being sold from the moogles. People won't be able to make a lot of gil on them until a while after the event ends, in that case.

Please realize that this game WAS created by Japanese, and they really do have a ridiculous amount of festivals in Japan. This one of course has to do with the Hinna Matsuri on March3. Its a day to wish that a younger girl to grow up and be healthy beautiful and strong.
My buddy Shingo summed it up best; "Us Japanese have a celebration for everything. It usually involves booze. Hell, any excuse to drink in Japan is good. Why do you think we love christmas? Its the start of a week long party till New Years"

Well, it's not like anyone is obliged to take part, so it's hardly an inconvenience.

I can't usually be bothered with the menial tasks, but at least this time we don't seem to have to make the effort. That's how I like it. :)
