They spawn on the 3 level of the fields (from the bottom, aka go two levels up).
There's 5 triple bats here, unsure what the placeholder is. It's easy to kill them all, though.
Suggest RNG sub, because it's a little bit a of a wide area.
If you're doing the trial, team up with anyone around as everybody gets credit for the quest and for the trial, as long as they're in exp range.

It is a joke NM... theres a taru in lower jeuno by the fountain that sends you off to kill a buncha NMs many of which have no other purpose than the quest. This is one of them.
I also got this guy to pop right at the far end of I-9, after several hours of slaying every tribat in the area at night. He popped with 2 minutes to go till day time O.O Hooray for provoke.

For the quest, The Miraculous Dale. It does not drop any items, and is a pain to camp, took me 5 game nights.
Wiki says the respawn time of this NM is about 1 hour but will only pop between 18:00 and 6:00. I've been camping this NM for 4 straight game nights now without a single NM pop.
Only thing I can think of is since SE isn't making head-way on the RMT situation (banning doesn't do anything, wake up!) they decided to add in NMs that seem to drop good items but in reality they do not. That or SE likes Gundam and made these as a tribute. . .
Yeah... SE didn't do anything about RMT for many years.

That looks like one quest that would take a loooong time to complete for a bit of gil. I would have it on my to do list if there was a title involved tho. Sadly, there isn't.

Why is this even a NM? It not a place holder for anything else. I guess it is just for kicks. something SE added to be noticed.
i killed it and got some kinda Venomomous Claw, anyone know what that was for?

He popped for me on Watersdsay, Full Moon 90% and there was Water weather. I was killing the bats in the area to see if it helped pop him or not. No conclusions found however.
For me, he popped at the very top of the indicated area and he dropped a stunning 2 fangs. I tried stealing and got nothing as well.

I'm 100% sure that SE named these after the elite mobile suit team of the same name, the Black Triple Stars, from the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime. Like MrBrisby already said, the names of the 3 pilots were Gaia, Ortega and Mash, and guess what their special attack was called?

that was my first thought when i saw its name, i got of the gundam series on one of my harddrives. The Black Tristars are my favorite, too bad they didn't have a bigger role in the gundam anime series, they had 1 episode, however if you buy "Gundam Battles in Space" for the ps2 you get their whole life story kinda thing. i know this has nothing to do with ffxi but i love gundam!

well ive been starting up a SS collection of NM's so i think ill be out there camping him... and he might have a rare drop cuz some lvl 75jp was campin him wouldnt answer my tells
maybe they put it in just to see how many stupid people would spend time camping it while htey sit back and laugh

I've never noticed this NM before, so I assume it was put in in a more recent update? Even if its not, its possible that SE just hasn't made a drop for it yet. Auto-Collection picks up junk all the time on dat that ins't useable in game. or, the simpler answer, is just no one's gotten it yet. =P

Anybody else notice that this NM has the same designation as one of Zeon's elite mobile suit units from the original Gundam series? Their special attack was the Jetstream formation. Just tossing this out. ^^

Well, there's that, and the fact that Triple Stars was a really useful item in FF8. ^^ Though I'm sure your reference is a lot more "accurate," or at least makes more sense.
wow i decided to camp it to see what it was like welll it has some hp....a bit more than the other area bats...poped after i killed like 3 bats...and well...fight took 2 min and dropped 2 bat fangs.....it has appx 1300 hp i did 1350 to it
I've just finished a fight with Black Triple Stars, where I dragged the fight out until morning. Lightsday, about 07:30, during Full Moon, with TH2, only dropped a Bat Fang.

Not sure how true this is, but I have a business associate who works with a development installation of Square Enix, and he says that "recently" (as of last update I assume) SE addressed a few issues with a few NM's, that do not drop anything. I asked about Black Triple Stars, and all he said was Jagety Eared Jack. When I asked him what he meant, he asked me how many Rabbit Charms have I seen in the AH at one time. I told him always 1 at a time. Then he asked me if I had a rabbit charm, would I sell it. I told him that if I didn't need it I would. He then stated that so would a gil seller.
My conclusion: I think it's possible SE updated this mob to drop something "really" nice, and I also think it would be a wickedly rare drop (peacock charm, rabbit charm)..BUT I think it would be rare/ex. I will hunt this in my spare time, and if I get something, I will post results.

I was reading this forum and noticed that someone said something about an SE developer friend mentioning Jack, who drops rabbit charm, when asked about Black Triple Stars, a mob with no recorded drop... perhaps you must steal from it... and perhaps you need the rabbit charm to even have a possible successful steal...

Maybe what he meant is they put that NM in there so Gil Sellers would camp this guy thinking there was a really rare item they drop.I wouldnt know this is just what I think.
