DescriptionVirnage in the Bastok Mines sends you to Garliage Citadel to search for a bucket of paint. On the first level of the Citadel, search for the ??? around G-8 or H-8. It is usually hidden near a large rock. Examine it to get the paint. Return the paint to Virnage, who then sends you to Eperdur in San d'Oria to get a scroll of Teleport-Dem. Left, Left, Right, Right worked for me. Small room with bats, ??? was in back right corner from entrance. Clicked, got paint, warped out.

Walked into garlaige citadel and got it in less then 30 seconds. Here is one of the locations of the "???". It's JUST past the entrance. So close. I guess It was by luck because I came here planning on getting lost as hell.
Go down the steps at the entrance. Go straight, take first door on left. Go through that door and through the next door also, there the skeletons are. It's behind a rock on the floor in that room.

THE TOP DIRECTIONS ARE B.S. I went in to Garliage and took a left, left, right and its not even close to the "???" paint. THE CORRECT WAY IS THIS>>> When you go down the steps YOU GO STRAIGHT, FIRST ROOM YOU COME TO TAKE 1 LEFT INTO ROOM THERE IS AN OPEN DOOR TO THE NEXT ROOM WHICH HAS THE STONE AND "???" BEHIND IT. ITS THAT EASY.

This quest is stupid. I can find the ??? no problem, but all it says is "it's just a pile of rubble". is there any reason why I can't get the paint?

i heard that the room with the ??? had the bomb mob in it witch agrro by sight is that true cus if it is then how will i press on the ??? with out getting aggrofiyed by the bombs. >.>

Some of the descriptions are very vague. I hope this helps anyone in some trouble. OK.
1) head down the stairs once you enter garlaige citadel until you come to the first choice you have to make, Left right or stright on. TAKE A LEFT.
2) as you head along this corridor you will come to a fork juntion. TAKE A LEFT.
3)You will come to a straight left or right turn again. TAKE A RIGHT.
4) Straight on a bit, and a hole will block your way, with a left and right turn available. TAKE A RIGHT.
5) You are now in the room of the ???. Just tab around and you should find it with ease.
I hope this helps anyone who is as confused as i was reading some of these posts. PS the ??? will disapear once you click it. but will respawn shortly afterwards.

i think this has multiple spawns. i followed your directions and the ??? was on the other side of the wall. this map shows where it spawned for me.

Level 48 Ranger; 1 beetle aggroed but I shadowbinded it and touched the ??? then warped. Beetle was EP so I could have raped it anyways.
Done and done -- easy money.

Once you're in Garlaige, head down the steps until you run into a 4-way intersection. Go straight through.
You'll notice a big hole in the floor right after to passages to the left and right. Take the left one.
There should be Funnel Bats, along with another passage on the other side of the room. Go in that passage.
This room will have Skeletons, along with the ??? for the paint. It's on your left immediately walking into this room.

OMG this quest is horrible if you've never been to Garliage Citadel before! I did this last night as my 33 WHM / 16 BLM. Got there ok, stood outside and did Stoneskin, Blink, Protect II, etc, and I brought along some Prism Powders and Silent Oils, just in case of any magic aggro. I wandered around the hallways with Sneak and Invis for the longest time, avoiding all the holes, which btw, are very easy to see.
Checked all the rooms I found, saw no ??? and eventually got p****d off and shouted to see if anyone knew where the ??? was. A few shouts came back saying it was a random pop, and then another saying it wasn't, and an invite. I joined the party, and the high level player told me to follow her. Within seconds, we were in a room with a small rock (?) on the floor. It was behind there, and I clicked on it and got the paint! Woo hoo!! (Or so I thought....)
I was trying to get my menu up so I could trade her a small reward for helping me, (she didn't ask for this but I thought it was necessary!) and my Sneak wore off, just as it did that, the other player went about her business as she didn't know I was in the process of trading with her, and the next thing I knew, a skeleton is staring at me. I knew that look, and sure enough, it started hitting me. I was trying to use my Instant Warp scroll, but it wouldn't activate. My SS, Protect, and Shell had also worn off, so it only took 3 hits for me to pop my clogs. In the meantime, the player who'd helped me heard what was going on, bounded into the room and started fighting the skeleton, which was then joined by another one. She slept them, and cast Raise on me, but they then woke up and killed me again! I ended up going back to my HP, I'd de-levelled, but I got the paint, so that was the main thing. In the panic, though, I didn't even get a chance to look at my map and see where we found it. :(
I was a little annoyed at the way it went, so I didn't even bother finishing the quest. I went back to Virnage and got the letter, but then I switched to the Bard job I'd unlocked earlier (easiest quest in the world!!) and played with that for a bit. Want to try the other Teleport quests this weekend, but I'm going to work on my WHM and get it waaaaayy above where I was last night so I don't de-level again! :(
Moral of the story: If you're not at a non-aggro level, as soon as you're done and have the paint, WARP THE HELL OUT!!!!

This quest was pretty easy. Most of the mobs were being pulled by parties. It took me not even 5 minutes to get in Sneak/Invis find it and Warp out. I was glad it was easy.
Holla was a pain. Lucky I had my fiance to help me out with that.

Quest is actually pretty easy, in fact this one was easier than Holla. 31RDM/WHM(me) 30WHM/BLM(was 31 de-leveled doing Holla) and 34WHM/BLM sneak and invisible. Found it behind the rock, Dropped Invisible and got it recast and left. Only one death and that was from level 34 falling through a whole and not being able to Warp about in time. Bats Aggro on Sound so when you have to drop invisible make sure sneak is still up.
Some people said you need rank5 fame to get this...that is a lie. I have rank4 bastok fame and i received the quest. Actually, I always believed it only required rank3 fame. It might, I'm not sure.
Ok... Did this with an old charactor a few years ago.... You need max fame pretty much.... at least 5. This is pretty easy quest... But you must have invis... and the other spells.... So at least White mage 34 or so....By the way i have noticed that at least in fiary there or no taxies.... This is a wonderful way to make a little extra gil....

I have Fame Lvl 4 in Bastok but still can't get the quest. A couple of people seem to have the same problem as well.
Has anyone noticed they needed to finish another quest before this one will be given?

I already had this quest in my list, and just went for it. I got to Garliage and Sneaked and Invisied to a room at (G-8). I targeted the ??? immediately, however, it was in the room right next to it. I headed to that room, dropped Invisi, examined the ??? for the paint, and warped. Not hard at all.
It seems this guide was written rather hastily, so here are a few clarifications.
1: You must have Bastok Fame of level 4 or greater. The best quest for leveling fame is http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?fquest=180 . Trade Boyahda Moss, it gives more fame than Corn, which gives more fame than Cabbage.
2: Virmage in Bastok Mines starts this quest. He can be a bit tricky to find. Enter the Bat's Liar on the upper level, go down the hall, he is in the last room.
3: The ??? for the paint is always in the same place. The guide implies that the ??? moves around; it does not. It is very clearly marked at http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/nav/?act=show&id=garlaige_citadel .

Okay I cannot find the NPC. From everything I read he should be by the gate to exit bastok to give quest. Am I looking in wrong place.
