As a 75thf these things are push overs. Pulling 1600+ on Sneak Attack + Dancing Edge. Only gotten one plume out of like 15 fights so far. someone else just showed up...gonna go own 'em.
I faced one in Misareaux Coast to try and learn Feather Barrier early, as a BLU/THF, should have subbed /WHM for cures, but I don't think it would have mattered. My /NIN sub is only 24, and I personally hate that sub for solo, since I tend to get my *** kicked between utsusemi casts even if I use headbutt.
It took down my stoneskin with one hit, and it seemed to use some special attack right away after a couple hits. Giga Scream I think or something. I had my NPC out to help with the TP building and damage, but I ended up face down on the ground and my NPC got sent away upon my death. It ranked Decent Challenge, but they hit friggin' hard, much harder than any of the easy prey fish nearby.
In the desert, these drop Light Crystals... in Mis. Coast, I got nothing but Wind Crystals... this strikes me odd. Are they not the same family/mob? Aren't they based on the same element and therefore drop the same crystals? Eh, just a lil something that makes me go "Hmmm."
Was wondering about in altepa and saw this just after my NPC deserted me, conned EP to me, never seen it in Eastern Altepa so checked here for it, thought wtf, might as well give it ago, pulled levi out and hit him with tail whip, thinking the gravity with give me enough time to get near korroloka zone incase anything crap happens (no warp with /smn is a bad idea flash > warp sorted with /blm).
That didn't got to plan runs damn fast, flashed him halfway, put up regen II, and aquaveil, pulled him about a block on the map away from the zone, then proceeded to melee him with a battle staff, all i had was that, 2 ele staves, AF1, shield with the +5 shield skill (lv40) and liliths rod. Managed to drop this sucker in the end with about 50mp left and all my HP, wasn't using any food and staff was at 155 skill level.
Though the fight did go on, think it lasted 7mins, haste wore twice and aquaveil wore once in that time, and it dropped about a min after i put up my third haste, paralyze, slow and dia i kept on him, flash and stoneskin if nec, blink is pointless i think, 1 cure II is going to cure more then what 3 hits from him did to me.
Aquaveil and flash are going to be big helps and i realised stoneskin was alot better then spamming the regen on myself.
I used to farm these things for plumes in misereaux, and it was good gil, cus they sold for 250k/stack on Seraph -- no problem as a 60 thf/nin. In fact, often I could kill them without getting hit. I'd start out with sneak attack, hit it with a blind bolt, give it 3-4 acid bolts, and then hit him with a dancing edge for at least 700, without sneak attack.
Dancing Edge > Diatryma.
One time @ lvl 60, I ate a mithkabob, hit him with 4 acid bolts, then did a sneak attack/hide/dancing edge for 1326 dmg. lol... really thf can take these sooo easily. They checked easy prey, and i believe that they are about lvl 50.
The reason I'm posting is not to show all you thf-bashers out there that we can pwn stuff, too; really, I just want to know if any of you have been getting plumes off of the big birds lately. I used to get about 1 plume per 5-10 kills with TH2, but I went back recently and killed about 30 with no drop. Also, I'd noticed that the price of stacks of these has been rising dramatically lately. So, was there a change in drop-rate in a recent patch or was I just really unlucky? I don't remember what day or moon it was.
I've seen it spawn in NW of E Altepa also. Plus there are tons of 'em in NW area of Misereaux.
As for the meat...it sucks. You can't sell it on AH and NPCs won't buy it(even though its not rare/ex) It can only be sold in Bazaar. I've had a stack of this meat for sale in Bazaar for the past month at 2000gil a piece...not a single one has sold...hmmm?? Garbage??
So, this badboy aggro'd me in {Eastern Altepa Desert} when I run up to it while facing me. Though i can run up behind them and SA without aggro. So sight aggro is confirmed. He {/check}ed as {easy prey} low evasion and defense. I was 56drk/thf at the time.
I was leveling my NPC in East Altepa, when I saw this thing. Not knowing what it was, I kept away from it until my NPC left.
It checked EP low def to me at 61 RDM/BLM. I put up Stoneskin/Phalanx Ice Spikes and Enspell and had at it. I hit it for about 30~40. Ice Spikes paralyzed it frequently. Stoneskin came off when it was nearly dead, and phalanx lasted till it died. It hit me for 20~40. No Drop.
IM a lvl 60 monk and i kill these thingd in East Atelpa hopeing to get the feather or the blump. Well just reasently, errr, last night i killed it again with my NPC and it droped a Diatryma Meat. I came here to see were it is in the AH cause i dont see it under ingrediants.
I cannot confirm this, but i do not think these agro in Misareaux Coast. My brother was fighting some stuff (he's bst btw) avoiding the Diatryma (he knew/assumed all G. Birds agro, so...). Anyway he was fighting something while a Diatryma walked up to him. He was surprised, and trying to get away when he realized (remember, the bird was right next to him, facing him) that it did NOT agro! He walked around it a few times to confirm. Didn't seem to do anything... To clear up more questions, he was level 49ish and they checked DC-T.
These guys have insane resistance to sleep. As a blm you might be able to solo one blink and stoneskin tanking and using bind when avaiable but unlikely... they are aspirable though.
Actually i tried to solo one of these yesterday. I have to say its not that tough, sure blink helps but if you try to keep blink/stoneskin up the entire time you're going to run into trouble with getting out any damage. Just blink/stoneskin at the beginning of the battle, bind then debuff him, don't use any DoTs though because BLMs solo by sleeping mobs to regain HP/MP during fights. Keep Paralyze/slow/blind up to make your job a bit easier, watch your debuffs too,the ones i fought were shaking them off pretty quick even though they were EP. It's not too hard to solo them if you're a black mage, you just have to know what you're doing (and have sleep II and a dark staff, but you should have those anyways by now >_>)
Edit: I don't know if it just happeend to be one i chose or i'm fighting in a different area than the other people but i honestly had very little trouble soloing one of these.
Edit again: Just realized why i could sleep solo them. Last time i was fighting them was darksday. Just got my *** handed to me.
I fought these on a regular basis for fun as a rng 68/nin 34 while waiting for my sp to log in to go exp, I was using a bolt combo of acid, bloody & holy to kill them. no utsusemi and these mobs got an unholy accuracy, cause I was only able to take 2-3 before having to rest, since it was hitting me for around 60 dmg each time and criticals around 100-150 dmg and bloody bolts were only draining around 45 hp max top, so regardless of lvls I'll either will have to blind it with Tsurara or switch to arrows for more dmg.
They do Aggro (I have not checked this myself, but everyone else says they do)
They DO link (I've checked this multiple times. they dont link easy though, I had to run them right in front of other ones to get them to link, but they do)
They do NOT aggro to low HP
they do NOT aggro to healing
HP: 2200 - 2500 (my low dmg for killing one was 2253, and most were killed between 2500-2600 dmg delt)
Respawn: 5 minutes (close to 'on the dot' everytime I checked)
Skills:
Feather Shield >>> evasion up skill
Scratch >>> physical dmg (i assume single target)
Gliding Spike >>> Ability dmg
Triple Attack >>> like all other Triple attacks I assume.. it never landed on me
Curious to know if you still play or not but how can it aggro you if your walking around it but not healing next to it? I thought everything that is aggressive will aggro no matter the lvl of the character? Or was the whole healing aggro changed in a update of some kind?
Anyone know the level of these in Miseraux Coast?? They spawn near the water fall. They hit me hard at 69, but I can handle 1 + a link or 2 pretty well. I am guessing they are 55 or 60
I'm a lev 57 and they are ep to me. I solo them and I know for the last one I got 25 exp, also 30 and 36 exp.
Edit: This has dropped the giant bird feather, giant bird plume, and wind crystal for me in Mis. Coast.
I'm level 59 SMN and those in Mis. Coast are [Easy Prey] to me. Pretty easy fight using shiva's double slap. Will finish fight generally with Shiva down below 25% health and me with 200ish/800MP.
I made the mistake just once of pulling with paralyze instead of ordering shiva to attack then retreat (to pull back to safer spot). First hit did 176 to me, 2nd did 90, and fortunately there wasn't a third!
My summon skill isn't capped at 181.
Shiva took the following damage from bird: normal attacks: 20-40 per hit critical attack: 80-100 Scratch: 30 Gliding Spike: 29 Triple Attack: 101 Stormwind (area): 20 (13 to me with no buffs)
Shiva did the following damage to the bird: normal attacks: 40-60 per hit critical attack: 80-100 Double Slap: 550-700
Forgot to add that I use double slap twice which usually takes the bird down within a few hits of death.

I fought one of the ones in Misareaux Coast with just me (54THF/NIN) and a 55RDM/WHM, and we owned it. It was EP-- to me. So no, I don't think they are 55-60. :P
pops at I-10 and K-7, it either pops at one or the other about every 5-10 mins.
i can confirm it drops giant bird feather as well as giant bird plume, feather drops often, plume drops rarely but i've gotten both. plume sells for 9k on carbuncle.
it's not an NM, it's more like rams in konschat highlands, they are rare but pop pretty frequently.
i'm a 64 bst and courier carrie killed this thing without losing even 1/4 of her hp.
i've also killed the greater birds in western, they are easy prey to me at lvl 64, 1 courier carrie could handle this and lose around 40% hp.
Level 62 rng/nin. Got 18xp Has 2400-2500 HP. Killed it with a ranged attack for 146, total damage dealt was 2499. So there's a good level range. Spawned in the middle of I-10. Took it down without any trouble or worries. ~Lelan
Update: Spent the last little while getting some more info on this thing. Hit points are 2200-2500. Spawns exactly 5 minutes after it dies. Spawns anywhere in the south-southeast (G-10 - I-10) 5 of the 6 spawns were in G-10. Out of 6 kills I got 2 light crystals, 1 beastmen seal and 1 giant bird feather. Gave 14-16xp each kill. As a lv62 rng/nin it as hitting me for 30-40 damage.
