Historical InformationIn Hindu mythology, Rama (short for Sri Ramachandra) was the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu, and was the prince and later the king of Kosala. Rama was married to Sita, avatar of Lakshmi, after proving his strength and ability by accidentally breaking the bow of the god Shiva in a test to string and fire it, which no other person was capable of doing. After their marriage, Rama exiled himself in the forest for fourteen years as to give up his right to Kosala's throne. During this time of exile, Sita was kidnapped by Ravana, the Rakshasa monarch of Lanka, which forced Rama to wage a long war upon him. After slaying many of the Rakshasa over the years that the war ravaged, Rama eventually confronted Ravana himself. The two inflicted significant wounds upon another, with neither showing any clear superiority over the other, until Rama was capable of severing Ravana's central head (Ravana was said to have nine heads, with four radiating outward from his central head). However, a disgusting head, the representation of all the evil within Ravana, grew out in its place, to which Rama decapitates it, only for the cycle to occur again. As nighttime pressed on, which fueled Ravana's powers, the god Vibheeshana informs Rama that Ravana had obtained a vial of the Amrita (see Amrita), and while he had not consumed it, he had stored the vial within his stomach, which was the reason that the heads continued to grow despite his attempts to cut them off. Rama, taking this knowledge, praises the sun god Aditya, then summons the great arrow Brahmastra, the most powerful weapon in existence, and fires it into Ravana, destroying the vial of Amrita and killing him utterly. After his victory over Ravana, Rama returned to Kosala and took his place as its king.
