Figured I'd camp today (Monday) after work, so I went to log out in Fei'yin Sunday night. I figured I'd kill the PH on the 0.001% chance the NM would spawn... Sure enough, he did. Meaning, no one had touched it all Sunday!?

Only camp this if you want the weapons as a trophy. It's much easier, not to mention faster, to just get the gil.

I actually did this with a certain simple strategy I'll also share with yall.
Many of yall who have camped NMs as often as I do surely noticed that when a NM is not camped or very rarely for a day or so, or not even killed at all, it has a tendency to spawn faster than if it is commonly camped.
Understanding this, I had never recently noticed anyone camping -any- of the shadows recently (on Fenrir), so I decided I would break up my camping into to two shifts. I came to agree with it is a 16-32 hour pop based on people comments spread out on the sites, which sounds horrible, but to me that sounded great. 16-32 hour window means when you log in, it has a 50% chance of being in its window, thats nice if you ask me.
And if it hasn't been camped recently, kill 4-6 ph's, if theres no pop, do it again in 16 hours. Worked for me hopefully it'll work for you, drop rate is a whole diff story but maybe you'll get lucky ^^ . If this info is useful rate me up :0P

I camped this for 3 weeks straight 17+ kills. I also have camped him a few weekends since with 1~2 kills per weekend. If SE was serious about making gill sellers dead they would make the NM's that drop rare/ex items pop way more often and drop way more often too.

SE is in no way serious about getting rid of gil sellers. RMT are here to stay and we just need to open our eyes and stop being fooled into thinking that SE actually cares. The truth: SE profits from RMT, and i dont blame them. Im not saying its right but if you owned FFXI wouldnt you want to milk it for all its worth while it was popular?

I know for most NM's it is a very good idea to be far above the level of it, but my curiosity is peaked since someone said it only has about 3400HP?
If this is correct.. could a 65 Samurai take it out pretty easy? I figured Gekko->Yuki spam would make short work of 3400HP between having TP -> Meikyo Shisui -> Meditate

Ok so i guess I'm one of the people everybody hates who has been camping these for weeks on end...well heres my story,I've been thinking about trying to get these all week.Well i thought about it hard today and i thought o well ill take a shot at it.So i take my 45 min journey to fei yin cause I'm not familiar with that area.Well,i finally get here and start killing he PH,about 2 hours later i see Wester Shadow.I'm freaking out right about now,so he aggros on to me and i have never camped him before so i did no know how to handle him.so i start fighting and throw up hundred fists and begin to completely destroy him.I'm sitting there thinking man this guys a puss,well then when I'm finished i et a revival tree root......and a Pair of Retaliators!!!!!!!so I'm one of the lucky bastards everybody hates lol.heres some pics btw (lol at the dude that said i wouldnt win too :P)

So is this NM 16-24 18-24 or 24+? Every site I read and every person I talk to says something different. I've camped this thing 3 days in a row and so far it's popped before the 24 hour window but the other day 24 hour window passed and I didn't see it, yet I'm pretty sure it wasn't killed. Was it changed after the drop became rare/ex?

I read all these posts about people being 1/1 to 1/3 and stuff and I think, "How can that be?" Because of how my experience with this NM has been.
Ok so, so far I'm 0/5, and currently waiting on him to spawn today. Meaning I'm camping him right now as I post this. He has only spawned once at the 19ish hour mark, and once at the 22ish hour mark. The other three times were, well... 32 hour, and two 30 hours. I'm about to go insane because I see soooooo many posts saying he spawned so early for them. God I wish I had that kind of luck, especially the 1/1 luck.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? Some dance or bat or random specter I need to kill outside his dumb room? I constantly camp from the 16 hour marker and on until he spawns, and I kill both specters just to be safe, yet the 24+ hour spawns are driving me mad...

After this most recent maintenence, I decided to try and get my hands on a pair of Retaliators for my mnk (level 53 and rising).
The info on the nm is simple. The placeholder is the one shadow that remains consistant, aka the rdm looking one with the rapier and the small pointy shield. He is the only placeholder, and he respawns every 16 minutes. Don't bother with the other Spector if you don't have to.
Edit: The second pop happened about 19 hours and 36 minutes after my first kill. The third pop happened about 21 hours after my second kill. To us, the windows opened around 16 hours after our ToD's.
My anecdote: The morning of maintenence, I log out in Fei'yin about half an hour before the maintenence is due to start. I kind of scope out my competition a little, and it's not so bad (a <70 rdm, and a 75 mnk who wanted them for ballista). Maintenence happens, finishes and I log back in. I get impatient, the nm not being up, and I warp to go camp Kung Fu Shoes. Later, the mnk tells me that the window for Retaliators opens at some time in the next morning. Long story short, I lose about 12 hours of sleep, and my friend and I get the next three claims in jp prime time (no competition for retaliators. I was there to help him with ebow, which there was a lot of competition for).
My drop rate was 1/3. The party was me (rdm/blm), my friend Stevoud (thf/war) and on the final claim, new member of my ls Shyster (mnk/nin). I, for one, am glad I never have to camp this nm ever again. Beds are comfy. <3

I decided to try my luck hunting this NM while concurrently tackling Eastern Shadow after the latest maintenance period.
My Drop rate: 1/4 (Retaliators)

How does one go afk and wait for ToD? The PHs are aggressive, and (I think) will con EP to a 75.
I say this because the Cockatrices (levels 50-53) in Onzozo next to profblix will aggro to 72 or less, and the specters are 55-57 or something.

As a 71, the PHs don't aggro.
They won't agro a level 75, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) a mob has to give more than 25 experiance/limit points to agro if it normally does and these only give 15-23 from what I've seen killing the PHs.
The NM on the other hand... might not be so friendly if someone falls asleep killing 'em.

All these people asking if they can kill it. Uh, yeah, you can, with ease. I went as 75drg/whm, and didn't heal myself once. He used 1 dimensional death, and that's it. I didn't use healing breath, I didn't use Deep Breathing, I didn't use 2hour. Nothing. I had about 150%tp from killing PH, did 2 pentas for a total of roughly 2kdmg, and just 6 hits 100-200each, 2jumps for 500 together, and he was dead. Fight lasted under a minute. His dimensional death did 270 damage, my defense with Pro2 was 314.
No drop. Not really disapointed, no competition, very relaxed atomosphere, and only about 2 hours camping it. (I pre-scoped the area every half hour that day to check if anyone was there. Nobody, other than groups for rank5, and some RMT for cassie.) Oh, by the way, I found this interesting, but he doesn't hit like a MNK. He only does 1 attack at a time, with his right hand. Hits did about 100 each, when they landed. I'm going to do this again as 70war, and I'll let you know how it goes.

As 75DRK/NIN going in knowing these are highly resistant to Dark Magic, I decided to camp him. Even though a certain RMT MNK/WAR has owned his him for the past few months on Lakshmi. I already got a pair for a friend of mine(with the help of a couple friends), who's getting closer to lvl50 everyday, so he's pretty durn excited to use them.
I strapped on approx +40 in Evasion gear, and equipped a O. Scythe for the Accuraccy bonuses. I got there and within 15mins was greeted with guess who? The western shadow AND the RMT....
I fired off Stun and it HIT!!! He tried his damndest to lag me out, but it only looked like fireworks to me^^
My strategy went right out the window as I noticed my shadows weren't dropping off! I could literally just swing away and every once and a while recast Utsusemi Ni with zero complications. At worst I'd just cast Stun again and recast Utsusemi. Not a prob. I even managed to Absorb 50+ TP from him twice, very helpful! The only times it'd start to get a little close was when he'd use Dimiensional Death, because it hits so fast, it's not Stun-able, so it'd swipe a shadow off and possibly 2 if he swung directly afterwords. But after a good 10mins of blasting off Guillotines he went down. And....it dropped! This will be the last time I ever camp him though, I'm 2/2 and not gonna risk jacking up that record. This is a pretty easy NM is you have enough evasion, but at the same time you'll want to have plenty of DD too. Happy Huntin'

A friend was camping it and while I was on the way to feiyin, he popped! He claimed and kited it (RNG), while I came down there, and we killed it and got drop (1/1 on CC)

Funny story on this. Today SE had an emergency main. and i was thinking man my 52 mnk could use these. I run to fei'yin and pretty big comp, a ls just killed cassie and wanted more gilz (bastards lol). So then im /thf >.> on my 75 samurai and it pops. The rng of all people gets claim and starts to kite it. Shadow does some brutal hits and the rng starts to run. I follow the rng has 5% hp and i see "blah" starts to cast flash, instead i failed to steal b4 flash lol! I got claim killed it no drop ; ;

as far as nightmaric's problem. If u know anything about programing it would be super easy to make a bot that just logs u out after NM is killed so they still could be bots. Or they could just be better then u, but considering thats all they do it seams check and see if they speak english o.o; This guys drop rate really is Random just like all NM's theirs hihly unlikly it will drop.. maybe it will drop. and it probly will drop. i've seen people go 1/20 on emp and i myself have gone 17/19 on Emp. NM's are incredibly random, this guy is at and average of 1/5 drop rate on this guy. and is easily solo'd at 65-66 if u know how to play your job in a solo'ing manner. You could solo it at 63-64 if you had HP potions etc. And why posts OMG I WANT THESE etc.. yea um im sure no 1 would turn em down even if they turnd around and sold them. probly just trying to get posts up but whatever. 5mil meh. its about the going price on alot of servers. and a pt of 60's got ownd? were u guys sleeping or something or highly un organized.. i duo'd this without taking dmg with a 67 mnk and me 63 Thf. and i was tanking.
