do they have true sight?
Volcanic Gas do not have true sight. I have walked in front of them with only Invisible on and they did not aggro.
I just soloed one of these as a SMN51/WHM25. I saw in a guide that a summoner can start soloing these but I've never heard of anyone actually doing it at this level. It can be done. I got 250 exp and a pinch of bomb ash. ^^ The battle lasted about 5 minutes. I used a little less than 200 mp overall. (This varies greatly at this level because of avatar inaccuracy. Sometimes it takes nearly 700 mp.)
Update: I'm SMN52/WHM26 now. I'm able to solo them easily. I use Protect, Earthen Ward, and Aerial Armor; all of which are only for emergencies. (The Stoneskin will keep you alive in the rare case that you take the damage from Self-Destruct) Given that they're up to 16 levels above me, I've only gotten chain 1 for 300 exp. I had enough mp to go for chain 2 but I didn't want Stoneskin to wear.

And like all bombs in this game, theyre weak to fire. Not strong vs.
I was soloing these today for 250 xp a pop as a level 54 SMN. Then my 63 PLD and 63 RDM friends came along so they could get a key for the area, they were amazed that i could solo these.... what a fun thing to do when seeking for a pty =D
I had a weird experience with one of these the other day. I was mining, I lost invisible so I recast. One of these bad boys caught it and aggrod me. I started running and after about 20 seconds (it was a little far back) it lost interest and stopped chasing me. I was able to throw invis up and run over to it without re-aggroing it...
Wonder if it was just a glitch cause I sure as hell have never outrun an aggro before.

i think SE changed the magic detect range on these guys. I've been mining ifrits for months now and have gotten a very good sense of what is a safe casting distance. that was until tonight when a bomb that was more then a safe distance away came running down my throat. anyone notice anything like this lately?
Yeah this detects by sight, i learned 1st hand.
Im not sure if I was just completely unlucky. But While soloing here I killed at least 30-40 of these. I had signet on at all times, and did not once get a Fire Crystal drop. I have a feeling they do not drop it

The area was probably under beastman control <_< Which is pretty common considering how many low lvls die to gobs trains.
Got "Bomb Queen Ash" twice while fighting these.

Every Bomb I've met detects by sight/magic.
If you made it all the way to Ifrit's Cauldron without knowing that then that's pretty much entirely your fault for not knowing that. ^^;
