Hi.
Since the November 2009 update, the Ghouls also drop Pumice Stones very often. The problem with this is that every stone that drops seem to prevent a skull from dropping, so the rate is much lower than it used to be. I'm not saying it's impossible for both a skull and a stone to drop at the same time, I'm just saying it hasn't happened to me.
A THF was trying to get two for a couple of newbies yesterday and had been at it for more than 2 hours when I got to Gusgen Mine. He asked me to replace him so I ended up having to get three (one more for the other newbie I brought).
Previously, as BST75/WHM37 it took me an average of 8 kills to get one. This time it was more in the range of one in 30 (1/30).
On another run I tried BST75/THF37 for Treasure Hunter and that made it worse. I gave up after about 80 kills, came back /WHM and one finally dropped at the 20 kills mark.

For any who are interested I used my level 27 thf to get my buddy his. It took 7 kills to get one to drop. tough fights, I only killed the war type and the first ghoul spawn point in gusgen mines (take first left in mines, in the next room next to an old shack). Took about 2 hours total just waiting for 'em to respawn. No silence needed.

Got my skull - lvl 22 War (eek!!) with the help of Magicdavie, and a couple of his mates... Davie and i got to Gusgen mines then stupid me happens to aggro 4 skels, and down i go, he calls up re-inforcements, and they wait for me to get back from home point - Selbina, seemed to take forever to get back.... Got back to claim my skull with about 15 secs to spare before maintenance shut down...Thanx Davie, you guys rock......Cheers....

Been trying to get this skull for a few days now. I first tried searching the dunes. I looked all over the Dunes and couldn't find any no matter how hard I tried, at the suggested places and times. I even got to the point where I was searching for a few days riding all over the Dunes on a Choco to see where they spawned. Since I could't find these guys in the Dunes, I went off and checked the mines. That didn't work. I could take on the ghouls and skellies in the mines, but not a bunch at the same time. I died twice trying to get a skull. I ended up putting my "Road to Aht Urghan" quest on hold for a few days, and while on a LVL party in the Dunes (Map Location D-6), 2 of these grave disturbed skeletons popped right in the middle of our camp. We killed them, 1 dropped a skull, I cast lots, and won! Off for the bloodied robe now...!

Solo'd the skull 4 the second time in the Dunes @level 21. Had it on 1/4, but it took hours to find these guys.

Yeh, solo'd this thing 2 @20-ish with WAR in Valkurm Dunes.
They're not that bad, the one with scythes have a nasty drain spell tho.

Ok so I am a lvl 20 RDM with no sub of course... and its driving me crazy... I see some Ghouls from time to time in the dunes and i start to get the itch that maybe i could take him. If it wasnt for the BLM factor I probably would have hit him with a bind and push his stool in with a few cure II... any advice b4 i go Leroy Jenkins on this thing...

This drop is the worst thing I have ever experienced. I have 3 high levels helping me out of their own generosity and we are 0/35 right now. Talk about a STUPID idea.
i was helping a friend get this as 36drg. AS soon as i walked in i went straght and first ghoul that i saw i used jump(225damage) than high jump
(235damage) and he droped the skull
which really sucks because i remember trying to get this for my whitegate pass and took me a couple hours

I can confirm that this item isn't only dropped by BLM Ghouls.

You know, the skull isn't all that hard to get... if you're lucky. Some people get it when they don't even know what it's for yet. Others, like myself, have to be patient. I was optimistic when the first 6 ghouls my pts faced dropped a total of 5 skulls, although the skulls always lotted to someone else. Then, for the past week, I've spent hours upon hours hunting the bastards... my kill total (including solo and pts) has reached 27. Count it, that's 26 straight kills without a single drop. But you know what, I figure I can afford to spend a lot of time looking for an item that will make me so much better stat-wise. Gimme another week, I'll have it. BTW, if anyone wants to help me, /tell Uira on Ifrit.
I hate these doggone ghouls, but should I be able to fight one solo as a level 30 war? I see that they are level 27 or so..and I don't want to die. lol.

22 people killing Ghouls in Gusgen for ToAU pass. It was hella fun. Got my skull in about 45 minutes of which I almost left earlier. There were people there for 4 hours who still didn't get the drop. Poor bastards. Good luck remember Ghouls drop this not skellies.

I just got the skull today. I went to the gusgen mines with my friend shoutoku and he got one for me. They are easy to find before the first flight of stairs when you enter the mines. The first ghoul we fought dropped one.

Go to Valkurn Dunes at J-8 from 0 to 4. Two ghouls spawn every night.

I have just recentlty acquired the magicked skull i can tell you a good place to get it with a party. Two ghouls spawn at J-8 every night from 0 to 4. Make sure you have a party with a thief that has treasure hunt at a high level and you will acquire the skull within two hours.

At level 19 WAR I was desperate to get this. I wanted to have the subjob-quest done before we set up an account for my son so I could be a better mage helping him. After 2 weeks in the dunes I had only fought one ghoul and that fight was a disaster (we all got killed) at like level 16. I had the apron, got that easy, and the worm I got thanks to a helpful RDM level 25 that I was talking to outside Selbina. Then someone suggested I could go to Gusgen so I did. Shouted at the entrance and got a highlevel THF that helped me. It took like 5 minutes. I offered gil for the help but he said: Just help someone else one day...
The other day I was farming bone-chips at the first part of the mines as a MNK 26. The Skeletons were easy and I could take on several at once (gave me some guarding skill too) but after 3 ghouls I had to rest if they were the WAR-kind. There were several others (players) running around but what I saw they were not killing anything, just running around.
Then came a BLM 19 taru and asked for help getting the skull. I was hoping some higher level would do it for him but after a while I saw him desperately trying to fight some skeletons himself. I offered to help but told him it would take a while since I would have to rest quite often if I was going to kill ghouls. And so it did, for almost an hour.I tried one BLM ghoul (the ones with scythes) but it threw some kind of Gravity-spell on me and took my hp down so low that a whole crowd of skeletons eagerly rushed in to smash me. And I died.
My hp was in Gustaberg so I ran back but had to tell the guy that I probably had to leave soon but I could keep trying till then if he had the patience. He said it was ok, disband whenever you want. (The poor guy was probably half asleep by now.)
Killed a few more, one more BLM, and said: just one more but it must be the last one, sorry and good luck, hope you get some THF or something to help instead. So I killed another club-wielding kind (WAR) and then... Drop!
Very happy he offered to pay me but I said the same thing that was said to me: No, keep your gil. Just help someone else one day...

Very admirable act my friend. We must operate on the honor system and take care of each other. It is the greedy people in this game that kill the joy for the nice ones..As few and far between as we are...Be well my friend..
I returned to Gusgen as a 31MNK to get the stuff for the boatride to the "Aht Urghan"-areas. It took maybe 10 ghouls of the easier kind to get the skull. A lot more "real" players were running around down here, lol. If there is anyone trying to get sub-job right now I feel sorry for them, there is a little bit more competition. Soon it will pass but it was nice to see some "life" among all the ghouls.
I got this in 20 mins upon entering Gusgen Mines, I'm a WHM62/BLM27(I'm gimped, sue me) and I got it for a friend of mine in my LS. If you think this is a hard drop, you're wrong.

********* It's the luck of the draw. I've been in Gusgen for over 3 hours with a level 65 thf and a level 65 Sam. My partner and I need 2 skulls, and we got one.
Ok well this sucks. Spent ages last night with a 31 WAR/15NIN and a 40+ WHM looking for skull in Gusgen, no luck. The most we found was bone chips. Anybody know the drop rate for these?

So, I was looking for a skull forever in Valkurm, Shakrami, and Gusgen (even fought a ghoul unsuccessfully here), but it was ultimately Triitan who invited me to his party and let me lot the skull. Thanks bro!
