Others have not mentioned this, but the drain effect happens quite often, usually multiple times per fight. Also, when it does drain, I get 40-50 HP back, so all in all i'm happy with this staff as a method to melee alongside my avatars. Plus, its dirt cheap now (10k on seraph, or most likely free lot in KSNM) so why not?
why do they give us stuff that is so useless... yes, its a very nice dmg staff... but i really cant see this being better than an elemental staff. added to the fact that we have incredibly low stats for melee, and there is no real gear for a smn to wear even if you wanted to turn us into melee and you have yourself a pointless waste of time.
Ok, you're calling this staff useless? Let's face it. how often do you actually keep an avatar out besides soloing? for me, not long. I'll summon it, use a BP and dismiss it. Oh dear god without my ele staff i'm spending an extra 10mp HOLY HELL. thank god i get to keep my TP since i didn't change staves. But dear god what can i use my tp for... spirit taker maybe? By god that's genius! By spending an extra 10-12mp i'm gaining 100+ BRILLIANT
This is going to sound very wierd but I am hoping I can get other Grim Staff owners to verify this. I have noticed while soloing against DC and higher level monsters I have taken a considerable reduction in damage with this staff equiped. For example I was fighting a champion orc in monastic caverns. With a HQ staff equiped (example: Pluto's, Apollo's, Auster's) I was taking 25-45 damage a hit consistantly. I equiped Grim Staff during the same fight (notice no buffs were used any time during this fight), and damage was reduced consistantly to 10-22 damage. I thought maybe I was just going crazy. I continued to test this on an Orcish Dragoon. With my other HQ staffs I was taking in 100-150 damage a hit. With the Grim staff equiped on the same Dragoon, I was taking in 50-75 damage. I've only tested this on Orcs in Monastic Caverns so far. I am hoping to hear back from other SMN's who have tested this also and check with your results. Thanks!
I want one so bad! Saw one in a bazaar for 1mill, but didn't have the money at the time ;_;
This staff has even more damage on it than the carbuncle pole, but i think the tp bonus on carbuncle pole may even outdo the higher damage and stat modidfiers on this staff.
With the exception of the last version of the Relic Staff, I think this is the best dmg staff available.
I'm curious on how to get one.
As for this vs Elemental Staves...it depends on your playstyle. SMNs CAN melee and contribute to the damage (esp when adding the damage of the avatar melee also).
Dropped from KS99 "The Hills Are Alive", featuring an adamantoise-modeled mob. Easily done by an alliance of BLMs, had mine done last night and got this staff. Hoping to pick up a few mill for it. :3
This staff does roughly 1.5-2 times as much damage as normal elemental stave. Works wonders with Spirit Taker. The HP drain kicks in about 1/4-1/5 of the time, draining anywhere between 25-50 hp (thats all ive see so far, may be higher).
This is great for soloing with just about any avatar if you plan well. Yinyang and Carby meteorite is a nice Hate taker, toss in a few Spirit Takers and youve gotten all your mp back.
Basically evens out to being same mp cost for avatars as Elemental stave, you just get to add some damage now. But it does require some different play styles, as if you get hate you need to be prepared for it, and the Mob wont immediatly go for you smn upon recast, so Bloodpacts are a must.
