Ulbrecht's maniacal machinations have been made clear, and only one person holds the key to tracking him down. Find Professor Schultz!

Leave it to Scholars to come up with some wacky journey. If you had done the quest before this one (Downward Helix - SCH AF2) recently, you must wait until the next Vana'diel day before being able to start this quest. You may need to zone in order to trigger the cutscene.

Like the previous quests, you must speak with Erlene to start. Go to the Indescript Markings at E-11 of Pashhow Marshlands {S}. After the cutscene, you should have the key item Unaddressed Sealed Letter. Return to Erlene with the letter and talk to her for a cutscene. "Read" the letter by opening it in your key item menu then talk to Erlene again. This time, she will give you the key item Porting Magic Transcript.

Head over to Grauberg {S} and there should be a clickable blank spot at E-10. After that, there should also be another Indescript Markings close to it. Clicking that will send you to the BCNM.

In this fight, you will face off with Ulbrecht! I'm sure you saw that coming by now. Only things to really worry about is that he'll two hour around 50% HP and spam Manifestation; that's the job ability that turns attack spells into an AoE. ;)

Ulbrecht should give up anywhere between 15-25% HP. After his defeat, return to Erlene and you'll be awarded with your new purty mortarboard! Keep in mind, though, if you actually lose the BCNM fight you will have to talk to Erlene again to recieve another Porting Magic Transcript only this time she would require a sheet of vellum.

Just thought I would post that this was cake 99 DNC/THF. I brought a Icarus Wing but I didn't really need it. I thought the fight was capped at 75 until I did a little digging.
too easy

This fight is *VERY* easy! Duo'd with my hubby Thandere (75 sam/nin), and I went 75 RDM/BLM. Put para and slow on him right away (cannot silence) and dispelled w/e he cast on himself. Para 2 proc'd a TON, so most of his spells didn't go off. His manifestation at 50% was a joke, I think he got 3 spells off, and with SS, phalanx and blink up, I took no damage, hubby took very little. Fight took all of 5 minutes even with only 1 light sc and me missing the burst..lol, but oh well, it was a fun fight :) Good luck!
help! sch AF3! is this quest repeatable?

Hello everyone! This is my first post ^^.

Long story short. I accidently dropped my AF3 head piece, the scholar's mortarboard. I talked to Vingijard at lower jeuno, but the only options he lets me choose to erase and redo is whm, blm and rdm. No mention of anything for scholar.

Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!
Not so bad

Just trioed it a little while ago

BLU75/NIN37 (myself)
BST75/NIN37 (Berric)
BRD75/WHM37 (Brandonpa)

Fight was fairly simple; we went in, buffed up, BST used CourierCarrie (who did most of the tanking thanks to Snarl) and waited for the Call Beast timer to tick down a bit before we went in swinging. I set Frypan and Head Butt, but unfortunately, neither of them proved to be particularly reliable for stunning his spells. Overall though, none of us ever dropped below 50% hp (though we did come close a couple times when he 2HRed and started going nuts with Manifestation-enhanced nukes), and now I have a spiffy new hat, and an understanding of why Scholars had fallen off the face of Vana'diel after the Crystal War.

Many thanks to Berric and Brandonpa for being their awesome selves, and good luck to anyone else attempting this ^^
