ok Exoray Mold..... 45 mins killed about 20 for the mold... so not too bad had a 61 PLD, 63 NIN, 73 BLM helping Papyrus.......................................... 4 hrs later..me, 54THF, 61 PLD, 71 RDM, 50 RDM, 61 DRK, 73 BLM, 71 BLM... FINALLY get one but the other person was there longer so i let him have and 5 kills later we got another one...

So this is a nice one.
I've been begging my LS to go do my G1, and finally I get them to go. A 70 WHM and a friend of his, 75 DRG and I head out.
We went to Crawlers' Nest first. One Exoray dead, one mold.
Continued over to Eldieme Necropolis. They had teleport vahzl, so they went to the entrance through Beaucedine. I just went to any entrance and waited. They killed one lich, and dropped. (yay), so we went over to Garlidge Citadel. Went through the first gate, I sat and waited. One kill and we get the coal, I warp back to jeuno, and we finished it all in under an hour.

so i had my lv 48 thf and he was waiting at the door while 2 75'2 were killing some liches and no luck 25 mins had passed by or so and i said what if i come over and stand close to them instead of the door and they said ok so silent potion and hide and went i noticed that even bone chips only dropped like once so anyway as soon as i got there first kill a bone chip dropped and then wallah paper drop second kill woot i think in my opinion it was either crazy luck or the TH2 ability really helped thats my story mold 3rd kill and bomb core 2nd kill
I was lucky enough to solo my Paper last night, and thought I'd post a strat for any BST looking to try this.
I used Funguarfamiliar, and +MND gear (+20 MND, including +10 from food) to help with debuffs. I entered the Necropolis from the Beaucedine side. T liches were in the rooms closest to the entrance, along with other undead. I would let my Call Beast timer cool, then Sneakpull a lich back towards the entrance. First pet was allowed to melee until death, while I stayed back and spammed Silence, which stuck about 50% of the time, and used Sic and Reward. Once first pet was dead, I called a second, and meleed alongside. If the fight looked like it was going bad, I would just zone, then come back and finish the lich off with another pet once timer reset.
The liches love to spam spells and TP attacks (especially Paralyze-type). Silencing them really helps. The Paper dropped on Darksday, along with a Chest key.

I've taken so much information from this site, I thought I'd take time to give some back.
After playing for almost a year and finally choosing a job I want to take to 75 (Ranger) I've come to the first hurdle, GK1. It's been my expirence the Vana'Diel Day GREATLY affects drops from different Mobs. So I propose starting a thread where people record what Vana'Diel Day they were able to get the drop. XD *sigh* Finally started this quest. I've had the mold for like three-four weeks now. A duo killing exorays an stuff down in Crawler's Nest was giving them away from their treasure pool. What luck for that one. :D An of course many thanks to my exp party that let me go long enough to get it. (I think that was back around level 46 or 47.)
Got to level 49 an a LS friend's brother helped me two days ago get my papy. Hardest part was getting there lol. My spells kept wearing off in bad spots. @_@ But wasn't too worried since he was a PLD73 an the THF from his LS that came along was level 69. So I wasn't too scared lol. Stuff in the Glaicer was only easy prey anyways. ^^; We got the papy after three lichs. Fast simple an easy. Many thanks to Idiotwithguns and Doggie for their help here. (An to Omenoflight for convincing his brother Doggie to help me lol.)
All I have left now is my bomb coal. @_@ I asked Doggie to help me again but got to find more help. XD Blast! WHM50 an stuck there for the time being. >.> Could have gotten it with some friends from another LS had I known they were doing it. They were heading for the papy just after I got mine. *cry* I missed a perfect chance at my bomb coal. XD Going to try again next day I have off from work. *sigh*

And yet another story of the G1 Items......
I'm a 50 Blm, starving for the items to break the barrier for Stone 3 and the Ice & Dark Staves....Dreading collecting the items for having read too many horror stories about people quitting the game because of how hard it is to do it...
It all started in Lower Jeuno shouting for help with getting the G1 items....and no one was answering. Then out of the blue I get a tell from a 70 War/Nin that said she would help. /cheer ! We head down to the Crawler's Nest first to get the Exoray Mold. 2 Kills later we have it! One down, two to go. Next we head to the desert to hunt the Liches that pop at night for the Ancient Papyrus....but unfortunately none pop. During the hunt I'm asked to tag along to help with the Zilart 12 mission * it gives you access to Sky * so I gleefully join in on the chaos. After witnessing the slaughter of the Ancient Vessel *which resisted my Freeze ;_;* we go back out into the desert to hunt some Liches. Still none available, so it's off to the Eldieme Necropolis to hunt them. Boy that was fun.....lol. For those that haven't gone so deep to see the Liches....it's uber spooky! Ka's and Fallen skeletons and other things that go bump in the night are all around. Anyhoo, we are joined by a high level Rng; 72 I think...; and start hunting. After an hour or two it's becoming a lost hope as we've decided to give it 30 more minutes until we give up for the night. We sit by Shiva's Gate for about 10 minutes and a single Lich pops up......amazingly and luckily it dropped the Papyrus! All we need now is the Bomb item from the Explosures in Garlaige Citadel. We head there and are joined by a High level Paladin. We get past the first banishing gate and the Rng is already fighting an Explosure....no drop. We head in a lil further to find a second one.....it self destructs....taking a little over half of my HP and about 15-120 HP from everyone else...lol.....but we all live and behold...there is the final item I need to complete G1!! I gladly Warp 2 everyone back home and then warp myself to find Maat in Ru'Lude Gardens. After turning in my items and shouting in joy that I can finally get past the 1 tnl cap for 50, I run to my Mog House to get my staves and Stone 3 in my inventory. All in all it was a long journey, made some new friends along the way, and got to experience what very few people at my level have gotten to do. Thank you Vacious, Darkcow, Eruntalo, Toodles, Treshawn, Blackleo, Alexiel, Notorious, Pashuki, Aphrini, and last but definitely not least, Msfreddykruger!!! From a very happy 51 Blm, Thank you All for the help I have gotten to get past the 50 cap!!! Here's to the next 24 Levels and finally hitting 75 Blm :-D /panic motion.

I got all 3 items in 7 kills last night! I had some linkshell help, but wow. Got the mold on the 4th kill, the papyrus on the 1st, and the bomb core on the 1st. On top of it all I completed the tele-mea scroll quest while in the necropolis. I think I made some linkshell members jealous of how easy I had it. Well, on to 55! Hopefully this luck will continue.

I'm a Bst who's fast-approaching level 50, and I was wondering if anyone knows where the Hecteye-type mobs are in relation to where all the Liches spawn.
I've been doing some research, and it appears that I just might be able to get all my drops the same way I've handled the vast majority of my Bst career - solo.
If someone can point me in the right direction, I'd like to check out those Hecteyes and see if they're going to make halfway feasible pets to sic on the Liches.
Any and all advice and suggestions is greatly appreciated.

This quest is really irritating....
You can do 2-3 dragon and kazham pass with people your level, you make pick up parties and voila no problem.

Why make a quest that can only be done with high level help?
And then, no one's doing it. I can get two or three people together, and that's it.

I can't stand having to do this quest! I already got the mold by lotting on it when an Exoray dropped it in the Crawler's nest, but the Papyrus everyone is making such a huge deal out of. On this site, everyone's like 'Oh, no problem! I went with a HL friend and we got it in an hour!' And other people are like 'I went with a TH2 and took me 2-3 hours!! OMGWTFBBQ!!!1one'
And not only that, but every time I ask my friends if they can help, something always comes up like, 'I need to go soon' or 'The wife's kicking me offline.'
I think Jesus just doesn't want me to increase my level cap. ; ;
EDIT: Alright, several days later from this post, I went with a level 75 White Mage into the Necropolis, and we got it on our 6th or 7th Lich. I subbed THF for TH1, so I don't think this has much to do with TH, more to do with LUCK.

lol for me i got paper in 4 min off second kill wooohooo! coal 4th kill, and mold 3rd kill, lol so all in all including getin to the places, 45min to get everythin. paper was the quickest i geuss it was my lucky day :D

I'm on the Valefor server, I've been trying to do this quest for a month, any way one of you would help me? I'll pay if you want it, just please help before I freaking hang myself over this thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please /tell Sarif if you can help, weekends are best, I work 3rd shift during the week.
Just did mine tonight with a drg67 and a pld63, thought i'd get a head start since i figured it would take hours and hours of farming to get this done. 2nd explosure dropped the coal, 3rd exoray dropped the mold, 2nd lich dropped the papyrus.
BTW it was iceday last quarter moon, and whatever the dya before iceday is, we spent more time walking to beaucedine glacier entrance of battalia down from tele-vahzl then we spent in all 3 zones combined

well its time for me to go at it again. I just did my first EN run. Almost like a cruel joke a paper drops within 10 minutes. (and of course i lot low).
4 hours later I still dont have a paper.
Though I did get to see gil sellers die.. a lot.
Im going to try again soon. Hopefully this time with me the only one whos going to lot.
my th2 must be broke.

is any fame required for this?
No, the only requirement to do this quest is to be level 50.
If anyone has time to help out or needs to do this quest, send a tell to Gushazan. I'm on the Kujata server and am a whm. I have all the ports. If you can help with any part of this quest it would be appreciated.

Just finished this a little bit ago. I had 4 level 70+s with me and they got me all the items in an hour. Two DRK/THFs, a PLD/WAR and a SAM/WHM. Papyrus took a half hour of searching and the others took killing one mob and just getting to the mobs. ^^
Lol. NEVER try this without THII. When I got my paper, it dropped within an hour. Had me, <50whm/25blm>, my boyfriend who also needed the paper <50blm/whm>, and our ls boss, <67thf/nin>.
We spent nearly 2 hours getting the paper for the 2 of us. Why does everyone moan? I wondered. Then... went to help a RL friend get it last night. Got coal second drop, mold took a few kills but wasnt too bad. Then we got here (Eldieme Necropolis). Set-up was me <62whm/31smn>, <62blm/32whm>, <57rdm/23war> (not sure why ^^;) and <50sam/16thf> (obvious THI). Four and a half hours later we were all close to tears. BLM and myself went back so the BLM could come as his 46THF. Came back. 4 kills later, papyrus. Of course, these kills took a lot longer O.o; lol. And we got Ka aggro from low health once, so SAM died (Dimensional death HURTS) lol. I guess this isnt too bad, just, for the love of god, take a high THF with you >< lol. G/l to anyone doing this otherwise...

i was down here for about 7 hr still no drop i need help plz any1 have a better place that liches spawn i need papy bad this is all i need got the other two been on 50 for about 3 weeks HELP

I think if u try with high level group the game actually makes it take longer to get drop and if u go with 50 level party it drops alot quicker.I gather this by simply reading everybodys MESSAGES.So it does make since that the game might"tax" players who are tryin to get by the easy way.

Mold - Went with a 48-50 PT to get mold for group. After 3 hours no drop so we all left. I came back with a LS friend and got it in 2 kills.
Bomb Coal - I went with some high lvl friends. The coal drops on almost every kill so this wasn't that hard fo a drop. The only hard part was getting there since people come out of sneak so many times.
The Mold and Coal I got in one day within 2 hours of each other.
Papyras - OMFG I hate this one.
My first attempt I went with some high lvl LS friends, since 2 of them needed the keys for their AF. So went head to our camping spot just outside 2 locked doors. Not sure what the location is by there are usually 2 Lich spawns in each room. No drop, so then we dropped down to some cave and worked on the keys while pulling Liches. The sh*t hit the fan and everyone died.
Second attempt was with another LS group. We need 5 papyras and had about 10 people in all. Well... 6+ hours and no drop. The LS made another attemp and guess what no drop.
LS members decided to take a break from this so I went else where for help. I waited around for 2 weeks and no help. I know people waited longer but I couldn't justify waiting 8 hours/ day for help. I had RL things to do (college) so I left FFXI.
*One year later* I decided to come back to FFXI. I still had my coal and mold.
Third attempt - Old LS friend now lvl 75 in 4 jobs finds me and first thing he offered was to get the papyras. So we went to the two locked rooms with 2 Lich spawns in it. After about 10 kills and 1 hour later the papyras dropped. Now after being gone for 1 year I totally forgot what item I was suppose to get. When the item dropped I just stood there. I noticed my friend just stopped pulling and stood there. Funny thing is I thought we were looking for a skull drop (thinking about ubjob quest)!!! Just goes to show you the drop is pretty random.

The Mold and Coal I got in one day within 2 hours of each other.
Papyras - OMFG I hate this one.
My first attempt I went with some high lvl LS friends, since 2 of them needed the keys for their AF. So went head to our camping spot just outside 2 locked doors. Not sure what the location is by there are usually 2 Lich spawns in each room. No drop, so then we dropped down to some cave and worked on the keys while pulling Liches. The sh*t hit the fan and everyone died.
Second attempt was with another LS group. We need 5 papyras and had about 10 people in all. Well... 6+ hours and no drop. The LS made another attemp and guess what no drop.
LS members decided to take a break from this so I went else where for help. I waited around for 2 weeks and no help. I know people waited longer but I couldn't justify waiting 8 hours/ day for help. I had RL things to do (college) so I left FFXI.
*One year later* I decided to come back to FFXI. I still had my coal and mold.
Third attempt - Old LS friend now lvl 75 in 4 jobs finds me and first thing he offered was to get the papyras. So we went to the two locked rooms with 2 Lich spawns in it. After about 10 kills and 1 hour later the papyras dropped. Now after being gone for 1 year I totally forgot what item I was suppose to get. When the item dropped I just stood there. I noticed my friend just stopped pulling and stood there. Funny thing is I thought we were looking for a skull drop (thinking about ubjob quest)!!! Just goes to show you the drop is pretty random.

lol, that's funny. I've been waiting and shouting for two weeks for help with this and am starting to consider leaving myself. I don't even have my coal yet.
I mean what the hell is the point when you can't progress in the game any further?
Yeah... I Have to agree.
I can understan that SE wants to make things challenging so people will spend more time at the game (in order to rake in more of our cash...duh).
But DAMN some things are just WAAY too hard in this game. Certain things (like the Ancient Papyrus) really should be tweaked a bit more so the drop rates of needed quest items aren't like 0.000000003627%
Just like your story... it just makes people lose hope and quit.

S please Square-Enix, if you can rad this... make some damn well needed alterations.

I am still working on this, and it is not going well at all. I have learned to hate Eldieme Necropolis. I know how bad Dimensional Death hurts. I know that the papy drop is extremly rare. I learned it all in 8 hours of trying to get this thing.
So many deaths, tele-port holla's, dumbass high level idiots, greedy thf's, and dissapointments go along with the damn quest.
Games should be fun, and this quest is just a pain in the ***, and if someone did quit because of it, I don't blame them at all.

Got coal in first kill, mold took about 10 kills, and so far, in 6 hours in my group of 4 people, we have gotten one papyral -_- We are killing these things fairly fast as well. had the help of a 69 thf (lilthumper) who helped witht he first two items and tried for our papyral with no success after an hour, next a 58 rng helped us, nothing. Then our group (50whm, 50pld, 50rdm, 50pld) got one in another couple hours. wee...

Papyrus 0 in 4 hours with 66THF 67PLD 50RDM 50BRD and 72 WHM
WTF we were running everywhere we killed over 100 I bet. This drop rate is the worst I have ever experienced.
After a week im still 50 and no one wants to help ; ;.
