well im still doing it... a friend decided to help me get exoray we got there killed one.. drop w00t then we went to eldieme after picking up some peepl in jeuno... it was a nightmare!! lol
we got there and we got lost so everyone was somewhere else so they come pick me and some other guy up then went back to the others they got agroed whm died no reraise ugh >,< so she got a raise then the 61 thf went to pull a lich still dont know what happened but he got one hit killed just BAM dead so whm started raising and go agroed by an earth elemental ... 4 peepl died fighting that then whm and rdm are rsting for raises and i get agroed by a wolf and die
and they warp out lol everyone started swearing at eachother so i left... went back to jeuno and got a /tell from a friend to come to garlaige for the coal i got there got invited got coal 1 second later cuz they were fighting it for me ^^ thx Pusinboots (ramuh server) yesterday i wnt in again trying 2 get the damn paper didnt get one drop pld died 3 times... >,<

We did this yesterday, ALL DAY. The basic party was 4 of us and through out the day we ended up getting the items for various people. So 12 hours to get the items for 4 of us and probably got another 3 molds and 2 papyrus on top of that.

My advice, I don't care how you do it but get one high lv person to pull the mobs. Seriously, if you can get someone who doesn't get aggro from the surrounding mobs the whole process can go twice as fast. The most important place to have this help is when fighting the Lichs. Since nothing links a high lv and run to all the spawns and grab at will. We didn't have a puller like this so we had to fight countless Mummys and Ya's, take these battles away and you cut the time down. Also I highly recommend taking the time to run through the Beaucedine Glacier and fight at that Eldieme Necropolis entrance in the Downs.

i was told not to enter the EN from battila downs but from the glacier. where is the entrance at?

Bomb coal always drops...that's the eaisest one. I don't know why this is not mentioned but it should be mentioned somewhere so you guys don't think you're special just because you got the bomb coal on first kill.

Now, if you got the mold and paper on first kill, you're special! :-)

I got my 3 pieces also...it didn't seem to take too long..or maybe I forgot all the frustrations onces I finished the quest. Either way, my story: a group of 8 for paper, we got 3 in 30 minutes, then didn't get the other 3 for another 9 hours! For the bomb coal, since it always drops, it was just a matter of killing enough bombs to get a coal for all 16 people. (Several drop at once as I recall)

For the mold, my last piece, it took about 60 minutes (total trip time was about 90 minutes, to gather at CN and get to exoray part, etc). Just killed them with a higher-level friend of mine, so since it was just us two, we didn't kill tons of exorays. Probably around 20-30.

My suggestion: Don't focus too much on it or like everything, you'll get frustrated if you don't see the results you want in a short time. I see people totally come to a stand-still in levelling as they wait for help to do some quests. GK1 does stop you from going beyond 50..but it doesn't stop you from taking time out for other jobs or other tasks within FFXI which can enrich your character also.

In what could only be described as a miracle, my drops were 3/3.

That's right. 3 mobs.
1 Exo, 1 Lich, 1 Explo.
100% Drop Rate.
No THF.

I wouldn't normally post this sort of thing, as it tends to come off as bragging ... but I couldn't believe it. Wow.

I guess that's just lady's luck. ~__6

This's been easy for me thus far. Today in an xp pt as 43 RDM one Exoray we killed dropped mold. I won lot with only one other person who needed it. Also got a Crawler's Nest Chest Key that I need when I do my AF2.

Later on today I was in a alliance doing rank 4 and another person in the alliance said they were doing coal and needed one more person to open the Banishing Gate. Noone else needed it/was high enough so I volunteered. First bomb dyed quick, other guy got coal. Second bomb killed me with its self destruct, but I got raise soon after and got my coal!

So, I'm lvl 43 and 2/3s done with L1 ^^ Thanks to Corey on Sylph!

I completed this last night after two days of torture! First off, I went to Crawler's Nest with a party of 5, 3 of which needed the mold. No drop after slaughtering every Exoray in sight for an hour. Then two drops in a row, and I got the 2nd lot. Took us 30 minutes to get the 3rd drop. (Thanks Astaraelx, Willkiller, Seebo, Lunensa, Cesca, and Vyuumaj-something, lol)

Then I went to Jeuno and shouted for help with Explosures in Garliage Hell! A 70 BLM/WHM volunteered to help for free, so he and I went alone. We found the Explosures, pulled one and the damn thing exploded killing me in the process, but the coal dropped. After I was raised, I got the lot on the coal thankfully, because a split second later, Funnel Bat aggro and I died after 2 hits since I was weakened! *D-level to 47* I warped out immediately after getting my 2nd raise, but I got the coal, so I was happy! Thank you Vadican!!

Last night I shouted for over 2 hours for help with papyrus in Jeuno. Finally, got a response from a 75 DRK/NIN who volunteered to help me for a fee, along with a 75 BLM/WHM friend of his. We headed out to I-9 entrance in Battalia and they told me to stay put at the entrance. They fought a few Liches with no drop, when all of a sudden their HP dropped to almost nothing and they died! I couldn't believe it! I kept asking what happened, but they didn't want to talk about it, LOL! The BLM had to leave, so Sinistir and I went in alone. I used Silent Oils to sneak through. We killed 3 Liches and I got the drop! Not nearly as painful as I expected! Of course, I had THF sub, not sure if that helped or not. We saw the Coffer in the corner too and both wished we had a coffer key at that point! That was the end of Genkai 1 for me! A painful experience to say the least. Thanks to Sinistir and Ock-something on Siren, you guys rock! Sorry for the death!

Partied for almost 5 hours today in CN killing Exorays, got 2 drops the entire time, through 8 people, needless to say, that wasn't enough. All I have to show for my time spent is 1k experience and a Beastmen's Seal.

The drop rate on the molds is so horrible, and when you're actually trying to hunt them, there's so few Exorays to kill, not to mention that a lot of the time, they'll wander among a horde of Blazer Beetles or Rumble Crawlers or something, makes it all the more dfficult

You can choose to believe this or not, but the following is all true.

Asked a 75 PLD and 75 THF if they would help me do my LB1, they said sure.
So, our pt consisted of those two and me (47whm/23blm).
Went to the Necropolis and the first Lich dropped the paper.
Then went to the CN and the first Exoray dropped the mold.
Went to the citadel and the first explosure dropped the coal.

I couldn't believe it, total time less than an hour!

In fact, the longest part of the whole thing was waiting ona fourth person to open the 1st banishing gate in the citadel.

I just want to give a big thanks to Vehante and Fint on the Shiva server, you guys are the best!

I must have been extremely lucky tonight. The party I was in consisted of me 50 RDM/BLM, 70 WHM/BLM, 50 SMN/WHM, and 75 PLD/THF.

In total we killed 3 liches, got two drops, smn and me. 1 Exoray for my mold, the smn already had one. Then we went to the citadel and a party that was already there just had a bomb drop the item so they invited me and I got that one.

Total time = 1 hour 20 min, includes teleport vahzl, escape out of each area, running to the next area and a final warp to jeuno to finish the quest.

I heard that the paper will drop faster with less ppl, anyone got any truth to this???

while trying to get the papy we had to zone cause we had a few mummy links... the 2 monks went back in and pulled the lich and killed it, next thing i know i see...

I go back in and lot, and of course my damn luck i lose! but im the THF and with only 2 monks inside killing it, they get drop. Maybe luck of the draw...?

I just got really lucky on this quest. I finished the whole quest in 1 hour with just me and a level 65 pld friend. We went to Eldieme got the paper the first Lich. Went to Garliage got the bomb coal 1st drop and escaped before he passed accedently. We went back in and got the coal first drop agian. Went to the nest faught about 8 exorays with nothing, so we moved to the exoray room and got aggro by 3 escaped out went back in and got the mold the first kill. This was by far 1000 times easyer then I had expected. We are both still amazed. Thanks for the help Duneraider.

It took us about 6 kills to get 3 papies for 3 of us in a party of 4. We were there for about 15 minutes. Our camp spot was in the tunnel between two large rooms (Glacier path entrance). It took us half a day to look for help, obviously much longer than it took to obtain the drops.

Whew I was lucky doing this. Maybe my TH2 helped. Back when I was level 41 a couple of my friends were going to get their coal, and told me I could come too and get mine. Got 3 coals in 3 drops: yay. :) Then about a week ago, I got an exp PT in CN, and we were fighting Exorays and Blazer Beetles. We got a mold first exo we fought, and 2 more in the next 15-20 minutes. Yay again. :) The other day a few LS members decided to help me get my Papyrus, and we went to Eldieme through the Beaucedine Glacier route. As we got there, we took on about 2 Liches (without drops) before the PLD had to go, and the PT broke up. Then a couple of hours ago a level 67 THF in my LS told me he'd solo the Liches for me. We went to Eldieme through the entrance right near the zone to Upper Jeuno, and went down into Lich territory. We took on two no problem, dispite an aggro from a hound. No drop. Then he pulled another Lich and in the middle of the fight, another hound AND another skelly aggroed. I quickly dropped to 18 HP before hitting Perfect Dodge+Flee to try and get out. The other THF followed after a few seconds. I would've made it out, but I took a wrong turn right near the exit and died. x_x The other THF made it out alive, thankfully. So I HP (was set at Upper Jeuno exit), run back to Eldieme and meet up again, and this time I stay at the entrance while he goes down and solos them. First Lich he kills drops it. =^_^= Now I just gotta get to 50... only about 2.5k to go....
