Description

First, a few notes about Avatar in general fights. This is not the Trial Size quest, which is the solo fight, capped at level 20 (refer to Trial Size Trial by Ice for that quest). Everyone who is involved in the fight must have a tuning fork of the correct protocrystal. There is no cap on this battle, although there is a 30-minute time limit (not that it ever seems to be important).

General level guidelines: 60+ for melee and 55+ for mages. You’ll want a Black Mage for certain and a solid tank, but the rest is relatively flexible. A well-balanced party is critical, though. You’ll likely want at least 2 of the following 3: Red Mage, White Mage and Bard. You will want one of the melee or the Bard to be able to cast Bar-a spells. Having the WHM or BLM try to cast them will be problematic. Our strategy for this was to have the RDM sub WHM and melee using the appropriate En-spell for easy Bar-a casting. Additionally, if you can buy an Enhancing Torque (usually much cheaper than corresponding Torques), that will add 2-3 points of resistance to Bar-spells. Additionally Mal-rings (from the ghost NM’s in Gusgen Mines) can be helpful for the fight. You can buff up before entering the protocrystal, so feel free to do so and rest up while still outside.

Battle strategy for all six fights is pretty much the same. The battlefield layout for all six fights is exactly the same, although the coloration scheme for the battlefield will be different. The battlefield is shaped like a long path up the side of hill, with a switchback about halfway to the top. This topographical feature allows the mages to stand above the fight (and out of easy reach of the avatar) while still being able to cast spells upon the combatants. This allows for the tank(s) to have extra time to pull hate back should the mages draw it. It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to keep the correct Bar-spell up at all times. Not doing this will result in multiple deaths when the Avatar’s 2-hour comes (at about halfway), and will likely produce a loss. Each avatar is also only easily susceptible to debuffs of the element they are weak to (i.e. Shiva can be Paralyzed). Whether they are susceptible to other enfeebles of very high level is not confirmed.

It is strongly recommended to fight each avatar on the day it is weak to (i.e. Shiva on Firesday) and even more strongly recommended NOT to fight the avatar on its day (i.e. Shiva on Iceday). Spells of each element are much stronger on their specific day of the week.

Each quest is repeatable, but only once per real life day. Once you have returned to the quest giver and gotten your reward, you have to wait 24 hours (some say midnight Japanese time) in order to get the quest again. At that point, you can get a new tuning fork. Each time you complete the quest, you can choose ONE reward from the list, which varies from avatar to avatar.

In order to get the Fenrir quest (The Moonlit Path), you have to have whispers (key items) from all six elemental avatars. This means that you can’t turn them in for reward until you have all six, at which point you can give them to the Fenrir quest giver (Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters). So, in order to be able to get Fenrir and all six avatars, you’ll need to fight each of them at least twice. Additionally, if you are a Summoner, the Evoker’s Ring is only obtainable through the Mama Mia quest in Norg, which would mean you would have to fight them each a third time.

If you can’t get any of these quests, the problem is likely fame. Each quest giver is a taru who stands next to a non-taru warrior. If you don’t have sufficient fame, the taru will just complain about being hurt a lot while his companion will discuss perseverance and not giving up. If you have sufficient fame, the Tarutaru will give you the fork. The non-taru will give you a Trial Size Tuning Fork if you have met the requirements.

TRIAL BY ICE

To obtain the Ice Avatar Shiva, first speak of Gulmama in North San D’oria, near the exit to West Ronfaure and the Watchtower. If you have sufficient fame, he will give you a tuning fork of ice (key item).

To use this, you need to travel to Fei’Yin and find the Cloister of Frost. To travel to Fei’yin by foot, you must walk through Ranguemont Pass and then travel through Beaucedine Glacier to the very north end. A map of all of these places is highly recommended, but Fei’Yin in particular. Sneak is all that is needed in Fei’Yin until you get to the very end and see Weapons.

To get to the Cloister of Frost from the Fei’Yin front door, take a right out of the first room and follow that path for awhile. Keep straight when you have a choice, and eventually you will come to stairs at G-9. Go down the stairs (check the bats at the bottom – they are a lot harder than those at the top). Take the first left you come to beyond the stairs and once you come to a room, take the NW passage. Follow that path for a bit and take the first left. You will come to a large room full of Utukkus, Golems and Bats. Follow the right wall in the room north until you come to another passageway – take it. You will walk through a couple of rooms with Spectres and you will eventually see some Weapons. Put up Invisible for these and run by them. Shortly past then you will zone into the Cloister of Frost. The Protocrystal is right inside the front door – as is the Cermet Headstone for ZM5.

Try to fight Shiva on Firesday, and do not fight her on Iceday. Keep up Barblizzara at all times, if you can.

Once you defeat her, you will acquire the Key Item: Ice Whisper. Return it to Gulmama for your reward, or hold onto it. If you have all six whispers simultaneously, you can give them to Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters to gain the Moon Bauble – which is basically the Tuning Fork of the Moon – the ability to fight Fenrir. If you are collecting items for the Evoker’s Ring, you will want the Rust ‘B’ Gone.

If you get your summoner to 20, you can get the Mini Tuning fork of <element> and do the solo avatar fights. Right now you're a little low for the full avatar fights, but if you see somebody shouting, they may let you join if they have a high level or 2... or one high rdm... or something...

Guys, Avatars fight are realy easy listen this.
I got a static for avatar, me RDM 72, a PLD 66, a WHM 58 and a WHM 60.We always take the 2 missing member by shout in Jeuno.
When you reach 1 of the 7 cloister, buffs before enter and give PLD refresh,regen,Bar-anti.elemental avatar.
during the fight dont keep the WHM or BLM refreshed but just PLD and keep him haste too.
The battle needs at least 1 lvl 70+ to win fast.
this is it have fun!

Hi, ive been trying out an strategy for fighting avatars but i must do somethin wrong if i cant beat them so this is what i do: First before i go up to the avatar i take a yagudo drink and boiled crab, then i go up and let Carbuncle fight while i run down to avoid getting hit, and i keep doin this till the avatar has lost half hp, then i summon carbuncle to fight take another yagudo drink, and hi-potion like just in case if ive been hit, make carbuncle use searing light so the avatar lose alot of hp, then i run as fast as i can and try to summon it back so i can do the searing light again and defeat the avatar, but the problem is i never get so far because when ive used searing light and i try to run as fast as possible to summon him again but the avatar always reaches me and interrupts the casting.. what am i doing wrong,, plz answere me because im getting sick and tired of losing ALL the time..

I fought shiva 2x in the same day. (Today) Unless your Tuning Fork of Ice (key item) is used by beating the Avatar then you can go in as many times as you like. Once you beat it "THEN" is when you wait till it's a new day in Japan =) hope that helps some people that get discouraged if they loose.

Ya, its once a japanese day (10am PST is japanese midnight), not once every 24 hours. Because u fought the second time right after midnight, the next time you could fight would be a little under 24 hours.

You COULD get all of the prime avatar fights done at a very low level, but it would be very, very expensive, and very, very time consuming.

It may help to understand that the Summoner job used to be thought of as a "reward" job or a "prestige" job. When the game was first released in North America, there were no tuning fork battles. You had to do the lvl 60+ Prime Avatar battles if you wanted any summons other than Carbunkle.

I have a friend who, as a lvl 40 something BLM decided he wanted to level SMN. He did this before the mini tuning forks were introduced, so what he would do is load up on Silent Oil and Prism Powder and go to each Cloister where he would wait.

And wait.

And wait.

He would leave his computer turned on with the sound turned up while he slept so the sounds of high level parties buffing in to prepare for the fight would wake him up and he could rush to the computer to see if they had room for one more. If they did, he would join them, stand well out of the way, and contribute in what little way he could.

In the end, he was able to get all of the avatars this way (except Fenrir), but it took weeks and hundreds of thousands of gil worth of Silent Oil/Prism Powder to accomplish.

Personally, as a lvl 66 Ranger, I have all 6 tuning forks for the Prime Battles, and as time goes by I'll do avatar fights as the opportunity presents itself. When I have done all of the avatar fights, I may consider leveling SMN. (It's currently lvl 4).

To me, nothing says "prestige" about a prestige job more than showing up to Valkurm Dunes with a giant silver wolf for a pet ^^

lost

I fought her yesterday and lost. I had all my supplies, buffs, and subbed WAR for defense. At the start of the battle all was going well. I got her down to about 1/3 of her HP after two searing lights and a bit of pownding from carbuncle. About 5 seconds after I landed my second searing light she killed carbuncle. I was right up on her becuase I had to use searing light, but luckily with heki obi+1 and hermit's wand i managed to resummon carbuncle. after Shiva landed a few hits on me my HP was rather low. I attempted to use a hi-potion, but my macro set swapped and i couldn't find it before carbuncle died again. I started to run so that I could use a hi-potion from the menu list but in the stressful situation of getting away from the avatar i got stuck on some random spot in the geography. I died shortly after a critical hit. All in all the battle and preperations were perfect. I got off two searing lights having used only one yag drink(which I should have used two by now im sure) and two ethers. I will try to beat her again when i get home. If I could give any advice it would be, while you may have researched a few methods of winning, go with your specific situation and act accordingly. Most the time things end up going a bit unplanned, and between focusing on the strategy you planned, and maintaining getting things back on track, you will most likely die. Also I went into the battle with 3yag drinks, 4ethers, 3 hi-potions. It is always useful to overstock being as you can use left over items in other avatar battles, or if this be your last battle then resell them.
Fame

I got rank 10 fame and STILL can't get this quest (does this have to do with me not having smn at all?)
RE: Fame
# May 08 2005 at 10:00 PM Rating: Decent
First off you can't have lv 10 fame becaues there are only 9 lvs of fame. If you mean rank 10, that has nothing to do fame so you could still need more. You do NOT need to unlock SMN to start thhis quest, you DO need it to choose summon [insert avatar here] as a reward (<<<never confermed this but from a reliable source)or to start Trial-sized Trial by [insert element here]. I hope this helps you out in some way.

Ok, I'm collecting the high level tuning forks to prepare for when I reach such levels.

The fame guy tells me that "I'm famous in the kingdom." And something about people having no ill words about me or something and do good will to the kingdom and she will do the same for you or something.

And Gulmama won't give me the quest... Anyone have a suggestion? I got the Fork for the Cloiser of Lightning and I have less fame in Windy I think...

I've got this quest with level 7 fame in San d'Oria: "Licoge practically everyone in the kingdom knows your name. Your reputation is stellar..." etc.
Fame in other cities like Bastok and Windurst is not related to this quest.
In your case you need to work on your fame a bit more. Just check for the quest every time your fame raises. A post at the begging of this forum states you need level 6 fame to get the quest.

After many solo fights which i lost convincingly even while following the stratagy, i decided to get my fame up for the prime fights. Next i went to jeuno and have met some very nice high level players, i now have shiva and garuda. this was as a lev20 smn using the mini fork to warp to cloisters. You can only do this if high levels are willing to let you tag along.
Thanks again to the people that helped me get my avatars so far.

If per say, a group of level 75's or 70's and one level 45 tried to take on the avatars, can they do it? i mean i would think they can if a group of 65+ DD and 55+ mages then a group of 70+ and 1 45 should be able to right?

The nin the 2 smns took it n owned. It took like 7 mins. I just sat back n watched. I did the same with Ramuh. Hopefully I can get Shiva today. The trip to the cloister is really the hardest part.

NO, there are 2 ways to fight the avatars. One uses the 'mini tuning fork' those are SMN solo fights with a level 20 cap. The other is the full power form where you fight the avatar in at a much higher level and also can get much nicer rewards.

I need any advice or help you have to offer please.

thats because you probaly fought the tougher version that needs a full party to take down. you have to trade a mini tuning fork of ice to the crystal first.
