mob list (a.k.a. TRUER Hide truths)

1. Hide does work after you've done damage to the mob.

2. You can use Hide even if you're the puller.

3. Hide does not increase Sneak Attack damage, it does provide full Sneak Attack damage from any position relating to the mob.

4. Hide does not increase Trick Attack damage, it does provide full Trick Attack damage from any position relating to the mob, providing of course there is someone in front of you for Trick Attack to work on.

All above points depend upon one single factor. In order for Hide to work, the enemy may only aggro and chase by sight. If they aggro or chase by any other method, Hide will not work (on it's own) regardless of whether you're in front of, or behind the mob. If (as others have stated) the mob only aggros sight, but chases scent or sound, Hide will not work without support, ie running through water or casting the spells Deodorize and/or Sneak. (Honestly, i'm going by hearsay on the spells, but the water thing has worked for me.)

Now, I can hardly list every single family of mobs here and whether or not Hide works on them, (or maybe I could and I'm just too lazy), and besides, I haven't tested Hide out on every type of sight aggro mob, but I can list the few I know about. If anyone knows of others they could post them in reply and I or someone could compile them.

(Later edit:) It would also seem that Hide doesn't always work against all mobs in the same family. Rabbits for example seem to vary in their reaction to it.

Goblins - (but who didn't know that?) includes Moblins and Bugbears.
Yagudo - (ditto)
Greater Birds - ie; Diatryma. Apparently does not work on lesser birds, when I was levelling rng in sky, had the thf in my pt try it out on a flamingo just to see, no joy.
Cockatrices - though techically I think they are the same family as Greater Birds, both drop the feathers.
Fire Elemental - I don't know about other elemental types, but I bit off more than I could chew vs a Fire type, and out of desperation I hit Hide and it worked.
Wyverns - I'm adding wyverns based on the fact that Hide has worked for me on both Guivre and Bune, so I have to assume it works on regular mobs of this type.

[long delayed update]

Bombs - as with all these mobs listed, I'm assuming all types in the same family apply, adding that qualifier since I haven't tested on snolls, djinn's, or clusters.
Puks - never would have guessed, tried it out of desperation once when there was a pop behind me as I pulled, and it worked.
Colibris - So far the only avian type I've seen it work on.
Elementals - tried it on a dark elemental this time and it worked, so I believe it's safe to assume it works on all elementals. (except, apparently, elemental pets of mob SMN's.)
Tonberries - 'nuff said.
Fiendish Leechkeepers - The imps in campaign. Does not work on regular imps though, since they are true sight.
Buffaloes - A note on buffaloes, there seems to be a random chance for hide to work on them. I've had it both work and fail on them mid-fight, and I've had it both work and fail on them when they aggro me but I haven't touched them yet. At the moment I can't figure out what conditions need to be met for it to work
Rabbits - Again, never would have guessed, but good to know if you ever get one of those nasty rabbit links in Boyahda Tree. (edit: apparently not all rabbits, didn't work on Beach Bunny in Cape Teriggan...)
Qutrub - Though it seems to be unclear whether or not these are undead, they aggro sight, at least the one that aggro'd me did, and Hide worked on it.
Lamia - Since they seem to like to strip you naked and get a good look at ya, guess it only makes sense that you'd be able to Hide from 'em.

Another note, Hide also appears to work on all mobs in campaign, not counting pet types such as Shadowfang Void. Based on my experience, it works, but you have to make sure there's enough space between you and the mobs that they wouldn't aggro you normally, usually done with Flee. Since they're all true sight/sound, if you're too close, Hide will work, but they'll re-aggro you right away, negating it. As noted above, however, it works just fine on fiendish leechkeepers without getting any distance, since they don't aggro at all. Hell, it's hard enough as it is to keep them aggro'd to you when you're soloing one, as they just seem to repeatedly lose interest mid-fight until you hit them again.

Hmm, even less than I thought. It might work on Tigers too, can't remember if I used it on Kirata. I'll have to run some tests. If anyone wants to add to the list I'm sure thieves everywhere would appreciate the extra bit of knowledge. Remember though, please only post mobs (for this list at least) that Hide will work on with no other aids.

"Hide & steal" is the game they teach little thief children, when the others are learning hide & seek... I retired from the game as 69thf/34nin, and my only regret is that I can't go to Castle O or Bibiki Bay and get those lovely gold coins any more.

The Truth of Hide

Hello I am a level 52THF/26NIN and I have experimented and talked with higher level thf's about the ability hide.

1.) Hide will not work if you engage AND DO DAMAGE to a monster. In a battle situation you can have someone else pull the monster and you can SATA + Hide.

2.) When using Hide in a battle/party situation you want to have the main tank provoke first. You then Hide and make sure your standing behind the tank WHILE the monster is facing him. Your SATA will do extra damage. Here's a simple picture.

*the @ symbol means that the PC or NPC is facing in that direction. ex: @(x) char is facing left. (x)@ char is facing right.

Normal SATA without HIDE
(thf)@ -- (tank)@ -- (Monster)@ -- @(puller/first provoker)

SATA with HIDE (THF is hidden)
(thf)@ -- (tank)@ -- @(Monster)

3.) If SATA is used with HIDE it does cause more damage.

4.) Hide is exactly like the invisibility spell except that its an ABILITY (icon difference) vs the spell. So one can move freely while it lasts.

5.) Just to re-iterate. If you pull the monster you CAN NOT use HIDE.

I wish fellow thf's good luck. Hide is one of the abilities that makes thf a fun and a challenge.

Ummm yea it does...

Try it on a gob.

Usuaually what i do is use sneak attack.. wait for it to hit 20 or so and I use it on the mob.

Then I use hide...

Use Sneak attack again...

And bam.

Yea it works.

only sight based mobs though.. if they can smell you it wont work.. so run through water or something.

yes you can, but only on sight only mobs. If you pull a yagudo or goblin for example, you can hide and lose them instantly, unless they have a pet. Also, i believe deodorize will allow u to hide from scent mobs.

one question:
Can SATA + HIDE be used in the middle of battle?

Yes, SATA+Hide can be used mid-battle. Also, HIde doesn't increase damage per se, it allows full SA or SATA (with tank in front of you) damage even from in front of the mob. Also, you can use hide as puller, and after pulling, I've used it on the few times i've gotten a link from sight aggro mobs we're fighting. Further, of course you can use hide even if you've done damage. The whole point of it is to lose hate (from the appropriate mobs) whether you've just gotten aggro, or you've picked a fight that you realize you're not going to win.
Personally, when I'm not saving Hide to avoid unwanted links or aggro, I use SATA in the standard fashion in pt to start the battle, THEN use SATA+Hide to further cement hate on tank, or use it with dancing edge, if SC opener didn't take hate.

SATA + HIDE does not do extra damage as I originally thought.

I tried to use the hide and sneak attack thing but the monster saw me every time and yes it was a sight based monster. Beetles in crawlers nest. Every time they spotted me and my hide was wasted.

I tried to hide when our tank logged out and had to flee to zone cause of it. Am I doing something wrong?

I would just like to clairfy. There are some mobs that may aggro based on sight, but pursue also by sound and smell. Beetles, for example, pursue by scent. The only mobs you can really do this with, are Yagudo, Gobs, and a few other ones. Orcs pursue by scent, so don't go trying to start a train to Hide on. XD;

Oh, and Hide can get deactiviated if there's too many mobs on you, or so I've heard.

Actually hide does work with undead monsters (even tho they aggro by sound and low hp), yes it's really surprising but it's true.
It works on skeletons, ghosts and shadows as far as I know. Of course, since they aggro on sound , you better cast yourself sneak quickly or ask someone to do so but I think you have enough time to go far away enough to not get aggro back.
But for sneak attack, just using hide is enough if the sata comes right after .
A good macro for that would be :
/ja "Sneak Attack" <me>
/wait 1
/ja "Trick Attack" <me>
/wait 1
/ja "Hide" <me>

Actually your macro won't work. If you have any type of lag your sata+hide macro is going to mess up or miss trigger. I have 2 macro's for my SATA hide. One for hide other for SATA. And I'm pretty sure SA+hide doesn't work on undead types.

i was doing this on the beetles in quicksands today at 45..

normal SATA or SATA VB onto the tank to start then hide SATA or SATA VB onto the tank 20 seconds later.

it worked fine for about 5k xp then the last two times i tried it it spotted me..

i was disengaging, SA, TA, run away from the beetle a bit and hide.

maybe i just didnt run away far enough the last times?
sort of off topic

well i just had my theif de-leveled to 29 so i am quite a ways away from getting hide, meanwhile i was leveling my samurai, i'm amazed how much better i am at leveling third time around, i got my samurai to level 17 in a day and a half pretty damn good i may say, btw which weapon skill would be most properly used to max out damage at say level 45-50 with a thief and his corsairs knife combined with SA+TA+Hide+weapon skill>tank>mob i have heard that the 5 hit and so forth weapin skills (evisceration, dancing edge) miss more often depending on how much tp you have accumilated, is this true?

Being able to hide and use sneak attack should make hate-pasting easier with trick attack as well. You might as well just use SA/TA/Hide on the primary tank to open the battle.
RE: Hide + Sneak Attack
# Apr 02 2005 at 9:55 AM Rating: Decent
If you use TA properly there is no reason to hide after it because it assigns ALL the hate to the tank.

I think he means... you use SATA and hide so you can transfer hate when the tank already has hate, it just confirms that the mob won't come on :P then you wouldn't need a sub voker. this is great for nin tanks who know how to cast with out interuption, and good for PLD who get too low on MP to dish out cures for hate

As of yesterday's update THF's can now combing Sneak Attack + Hide. You have to use sneak attack first or it will cancel hide. So use Sneak attack + Hide then you can attack a Mob from any angle and still have an effective Sneak Attack. I like this I have yet to see if this also works with Tonko. I use THF/NIN mainly but didnt try it last night so I will today and post my results later.

What do they mean by random ?
Can anyone give a range of duration ?
RE: random ?
# Jun 02 2004 at 10:30 AM Rating: Decent
Random means just that. It could last 10 seconds, or 3 minutes. Or even 3 minutes and 10 seconds.

It seems to last longer than camouflage though. But maybe that is because my THF is at a higher levl than me RNG.

yeah only works on Sight aggro monsters... A great way to take advantage of this is to go Gustav Tunnel at 45 and steal/hide, that way you can rake up some easy gil with mythril Beastcoins. I think the Gobs in Altepa give Mythril Beastcoins on steal as well.

Hide
# Apr 02 2004 at 10:37 AM Rating: Decent
It drops aggro from sight mobs ONLY, and additionally acts exactly like casted Invisible until it wears. Example:

I have a train of Even Match goblins (gobs are sight aggro). Activating hide drops all of my agro, and I can then sneak past them because I'm invisible. But the same thing wouldn't work on Quadavs because they aggro on sound too..

It's really ideal for stealing and mugging a goblin, then hiding so you don't even have to fight it.

Also, I think Hide can be resisted by really strong mobs from time to time. I've tried to hide from really high level sight-based mobs, only to get "Player tries to hide, but it spotted by mob!"

Ok I just hit 46 and I did some Hide experimenting. Trained a bunch of Quadavs, used Hide, they saw me. So it didn't drop aggro. Maybe however it drops aggro on mobs that aggro to sight and not sound? Also the description for when you have Hide active is " You are hiding from enemies."

Hide seems to be used in conjunction with Flee when looting Treasure Chests. Since any invis status goes away once you start picking the locks, you can Hide/Flee away right after, and preferably use a scroll of Instant Warp right after. ^_^ Additionally, both abilities have a re-use time of 5 minutes.

Macro:
/ja "Hide" <me>
/wait 1
/ja "Flee" <me>
RE: Hide/Flee
# Jun 02 2004 at 11:01 AM Rating: Default
That macro is wrong.

Casting Flee will cancel Hide. You have to use Flee first.

Also, the farther you are from the enemy, the better your Hide will work. Example:

If you have 3 too weak Yagudo attacking you in, say, Tahroungi Canyon, and you use Hide, sometimes it will not work and the Yugudo continue to attack you.

But, I tried this at Castle Oztroja. I got aggroed by a Yugudo, decent challange. So I figured, "what the hell," I know the place pretty well. I won't describe my exact path, but I headed to a dead end, to gather Yagudo, with the intent to flee passed the group and head the other way. As I fled by the angry mob, I estimated 30+ pissed off Yagudo. Once I got pretty far from them (just out of boomerang range) I used Hide. It worked great, they all just stopped running and stood around like retards. So I typed "/em laughs at retards." Then I threw my boomerang and continued the chase to the zone.

ok, its hide.. but is it equivilant to any other class' like invis or something? can you move when you activate it. or is it like EQ hide that breaks once you move or cast? little info would be much appreciated^^

if you cast a spell with invisible on you will no longer be invisible, and i imagine the same is true for hide

also, you cant open doors or talk to NPCs with it on

I've never been a level 45 thief but from what I have seen, it works just like the white mage spell Invisible and the ninja spell Tonko: Ichi. You can move (I've seen thieves do this before), and I imagine the icon is identical (like it is for Tonko: Ichi) to Invisible. I haven't seen anyone try to cast a spell, but I'd be suprised if it doesn't make their invisibility go away.
