What you trade doesn't matter. I was running back to Jeuno from Garlaige after working on leveling my NPC in the basement when I came across Dragatama, so I just traded it some bat wings and beetle shells I had in my inventory and got the cake and then the snowman cap. Also got a New Year's Gift which gave me enhanced Fishing skill for a brief time after using it, but yeah, what is traded doesn't actually seem to matter.

The new years events so far:
2003: Year of the Sheep/Ram - Sheep(Ram leader)
2004: Year of the Monkey - opo-opos
2005: Year of the Rooster - Vultures
2006: Year of the Dog - Fenrir leading tarutaru smns
2007: Year of the Pig/Boar - Bugards
2008: Year of the Ox - Buffalo
2009: Year of the Rat - Qiqirn
2010: Year of the Tiger - Tigers, and for some strange reason, tarus and galkas in tiger leather with tiger masks. Taruger was the taru, Galger was the leader and the galka.
2011: Year of the Rabbit - Bunnies, lead by a giant bunny of dooom
2012: Year of the Dragon - Wyverns/Miniwyrms (like nauls in abyssea - tahrongi), haven't seen what the leader is yet
Holy sh*t, this is the 10th new years celebration. All that's left are the year of the snake, 2013, which will probably be Lamia/Merrow, and the Year of the Horse, 2014, which they'll either do Ixion/Alicorns, or be really funny and do Chocobos
The leader for this years event is a giant orb of light called a "Dragatama."
The New Year's Gift is a quest item to get this which needs to be equipped to get this.

You need to speak with the event starters to trade the item in, even if you have already obtained a New Year's Gift.
After obtaining the Battledore, on subsequent trades you will receive fireworks when selecting option 2.
Note: If you trade the New Year's Gift back, or you "use" the Gift, you will receive Fishing Imagery Support for an hour.
Equip the Battledore and board the Windurst-Jeuno Airship. Travel may originate in either Windurst or Jeuno for this portion of the event.
Locate the NPC Dilauriome on the West side of the upper deck. Talk to Dilauriome while having the Battledore equipped. Bring him two Black Ink and one Bast Parchment to obtain Copy of "Hoary Spire".
Bring a New Year's Gift to the Event Starter NPC and choose the second option to obtain the Battledore.

I saw the dragatama underground in tahrongi the other day. was funny, all the dragons were following above ground, but only the top of the ball was barely showing w/ name of the dragatama
